Lauren 08-498

Profile

It is with pleasure that I introduce you to one of the newer RAGOM additions. Please welcome Lauren. She came in this past Sunday along with 7 other adult golden retrievers and 5 absolutely adorable puppies from a breeder who decided to get out of the business. The details about Lauren are that she is a scared young girl about 2 years old. She weighs just under 60 pounds. She was micro-chipped and given DHLPCC and Rabies vaccinations. She has bi-lateral ear infections so she is getting daily medication to help clear those up. Her heartworm test came back negative, YAY! Lauren has another vet appointment on Thursday to see if she is pregnant or not.

Lauren is a very frightened and scared girl right now. She has to be carried to get her outside. She will do her business provided I turn my head the other way and give her some privacy. Once she is done she tends to retreat to a corner of the yard and lay right next to the fence as seen in the pictures. Each day she is getting more brave. Today's milestone was Lauren coming back into the house on her own following the resident dogs and fellow foster, Sophia 08-351. She was so brave in fact that she ate all of Ms. Sophia's food tonight. The old adage "you snooze, you loose". Please check back in a few days to find out is Lauren in a family way or not. Thanks for reading about the many fine dogs at RAGOM.

Updates

My sweet girl Lauren has gone across the bridge early this afternoon in peace. Her body grew tired and weary. The things that brought her delight (like inhaling her food and sashaying her big fluffy tail) have disappeared from her frail body. We were lucky that we had more than 10.5 really great years with Lauren. Of course we wished we could have another 10 years like everyone with their Golden Retrievers.

Lauren came into RAGOM's care in Oct. 2008. She was pregnant and would give birth to 11 Goldendoodle puppies. I was her first foster but had to let her go to another foster, Jeanine H. Luckily Jeanine lived a short distance from me and I fell in love each and every visit to see Lauren and her puppies. We adopted Lauren in January 2009 after her puppies were all adopted to loving homes.

We never knew Lauren's true birthdate. She was simply known as dog number 14, which was tattooed in her left ear. We were told at time of intake that she was between 2 and 4 years old. I would guess her age today to be somewhere between 14 and 15.

Lauren had a great life here. She helped numerous shy foster dogs. She loved our summer adventures to our cabin. She would go lay in the shallows of the lake to cool herself off. She didn't really care for swimming or playing with toys. She sure could chew a mean nylabone, usually during the middle of the night. And she had the constant nudge of her paw to your hand for pets.

Run free my sweet Lauren girl!

XOXO

Lauren is doing great! She is getting back her pre-pregnancy shape and that energy that she lost with the pups. The vet said she was at a perfect weight for her size. She looks skinny still but that's the way the doc's like it. She is such a good mom that she will still let the pups nurse if they catch her:)

Lauren is going to be going back with her original foster. He is the very lucky guy who is going to make Lauren a part of his forever family. He will take her as a foster until she can be spayed and then she is all his!:) I will be very sad but I couldn't have asked for a better dad for Lauren and she will have two fur siblings and a foster or two also! It will be a fun filled home with all those other pups to play with. The fact that he only lives a couple miles from me is a bonus. I have already told him I will doggie sit for her:) I absolutely love this dog:)

Lauren made it through the holidays great.  She loved the treats from her stocking and really liked to hide from her pups behind the Christmas tree:)  She is starting to feed in moderation.  Her pups are eating regular puppy food now but they still like to harrass mom and have her feed them too.  She is such a sweet and loving dog.  When we have people over she is the biggest hit.  She comes over for attention but is mellow unlike my dog.  She is so easy to be around, she loves people but is still a bit afraid and jumpy.  Her potty training isn't going as well as it probably would be with someone who was good at teaching her.  I have never been very good at it with my dogs either:)  She doesn't really like to go potty with anyone watching she is very modest:)  I put her on a tie out and watch her through the window and that works pretty well.  Other times she just likes to go outside and roll around in the snow and make doggy angels:) More on this beautiful dark golden girl later.

Well, it's been awhile since our last update, Lauren is doing excellent with her pups.  She is such a great gentle mom.  The pups are two weeks old and she has been with them non stop making sure they are well cared for.

I have fallen in love with Lauren.  She is beautiful, sweet and mild mannered.  Even when you know she doesn't want anyone messing with her pups she politely nudges you away and starts licking at the person- instead of taking more serious measures.  She is a puppy mill dog but she is so into her humans after she gets to know you.  She has been here a month and she is always wanting a petting or hug.  She likes to keep you close and wants her paw on your hand.  She is a cuddley girl and could spend all day getting rubbed:)

If I was looking for an adult dog (which I would be) then I would take a good look at Lauren because with a little work she will make a great pet.  She will need some socializing skills and get out and get used to the things that she missed out on being a breeding dog.  Also, she needs to be on a schedule for taking potty breaks.  If I'm being organized and getting her outside on time she does her business there.  If I go too long between breaks she does go on the paper that I have layed out.  It won't take anytime before she is potty trained.  She is very smart:)

Lauren has had her puppies and mom and babies are all doing fine. We have had Lauren now for over two weeks and have loved getting to know her. Even though her previous foster wanted to keep her while she had her pups he knew that he wouldn't have enough time to give her with his work being so busy. He still comes over to see how she is doing and to keep an eye on her.

Well, we thought that she was going to have somewhere between 6-8 puppies per the ultrasound but nature has a way of fooling us. The puppies just kept coming and coming:) After pup #9 came I thought surely she was done.  So we went outside to go to the bathroom and as she was squatting (what I thought was peeing) out comes pup #10! We quick grabbed him and ran inside and soon had the last pup, #11:) All of them are looking very healthy.  There are 3 girls and 8 boys. The little girls are way outnumbered by the big boys so I have to make sure the girls get plenty of "mom" time. Lauren is a great mom and makes sure no one bothers her kids. She is getting comfortable with letting me and my husband visit but we are keeping it quiet for her and keeping the little people out until the pups are a little older. The pups are "almost" all named, thanks to many volunteers, so I will put them on the website soon:)

Lauren will be busy nursing and taking care of the pups for a couple months than need to go in for her spay surgery but after that  she will be able to go to her forever family. She is such a pretty girl but needs to pack on some pounds and get her pre pregnancy figure back. She is on the smaller side and as sweet as can be. She is shy so it takes a few days to a week to come out and be with the family. For the first several days here she stayed in her safe spot and kept to herself. When we could get her to go outside she would just lay down. So I started going back in the house and watching her and then she would go potty. Now she just goes right away and it doesn't bother her that I'm out there. She doesn't like to leave the pups but once she's out of the "nursery" her tail starts wagging and she seems grateful for the break:) It was wonderful when she first started to wag her tail and come to us for attention:) She is great with kids and other dogs too:) We have girls who are 8 and 5 years old and Lauren really took to them. Well, I'm going to go watch puppies now:) Watch for pictures and for the new puppies to have their own puppy updates:)

Hey RAGOM fans it me, Lauren.  I have some able bodied help with my furr sisters (Indy and fellow foster Sophia 08-351) to do a quick update while FD is busy with some other work.  I am slowly coming out of my shell each day.  I learned how to go outside with the rest of the pack this weekend.  Today I am not as brave.  So as FD says sometimes we digress.  Maybe FD should offer me more bribes like the scrumptious roasted turkey or chicken that he rewards me with when I do the right thing.  Some of my newly learned tricks are to raise my paw at FD when he tries to rub my tummy.  I also surprised him by jumping up on the adult bed along with my pal Indy.  FD has caught Indy and myself in a little game of mouthing, only he is never quick enough to capture it in a picture.

Our Lauren girl is doing well and her tummy is definitely showing with her growing puppies.  I would say she really does have a "mummy tummy".  She has learned so much in the past 2 weeks.  We have walked her to the beach with the rest of the pack.  She is getting used to the Gentle Leader and walks better when she is praised for good behavior.  Our walks have been short about 5 blocks to the beach and then a break before walking home.  She will now venture more freely about the house.  Her biggest fear seems to be the linoleum flooring in the kitchen.  With lots of praise and encouragement, plus a few tasty morsels, anything can happen.  Lauren will even give me a few kisses on my hands or my cheek.  One of my biggest rewards each day is to be greeted by her happy smiling face and her tail just a thumping away.  Our best guess as to the arrival of her puppies is still in 2 to 3 weeks,  So stay tuned for further updates.

XOXO
Lauren
