Trooper 08-508

Profile

Here’s a warm RAGOM welcome to the one and only Trooper!  Our little friend has recently had the 2 biggest days of his short life today.  Over the past 48 hours, Trooper has had several “firsts”, such as:

  • Made the long journey from South Dakota to the Twin Cities
  • Gotten his very first real bath
  • Seen a vet and gotten up to date on his shots
  • Given a name!
  • Told how unbelievably cute he is
  • Retrieved his very first ball
  • Met his first kitty
  • Checked out the inside of a house for the very first time
  • Gotten lots of hugs and snuggles
  • Met his temporary and permanent foster homes
  • Gotten his very own web presence!  Not bad for an 8-week old!

Trooper is an inquisitive little guy.  He spent much of his first day in foster care checking out his new surroundings and getting to know his temp foster parents and resident dogs.  He is quite attentive for such a young puppy, so he will most likely respond very well to some basic training.  Trooper loves people, and is more interested in following his humans around than he is in just about anything else.  He will most likely be the quintessential golden "shadow".  He also LOVES to be hugged and petted.  Trooper has all the signs of being a big snuggler in the making.

On his first day in temp foster care, after getting a feel for his new place, the little guy was pretty wiped out.  Trooper wandered into the living room, found a nice quiet corner, and promptly fell asleep.  Hey, it was a big day; you couldn't blame a cute little puppy for being a little sleepy!   Today Trooper moved to his permanent foster home, and is getting settled in with his new foster pack.  Stay tuned for more updates as we get to know him better.  Soon will come the biggest day of all for him: the day he meets his perfect family and finds his forever home!

Trooper retrieves his very first tennis ball!
History in the making!

Hey... resident golden Sierra likes to play too!

Hmm... this thing is not a dog.  Why won't she play with me?

Is it really bedtime?  What if I look up at you with these cute eyes?

Trooper had a big day yesterday. First he got a special treat in a coffee cup. You can see that he really got into it -- both the treat and the cup. This was our last chance to spoil him before he went away. The biggest part of his day was not the treat but the visit by the prospective adoptive family, a dad and two young boys and a stay-at-home mom. He absolutely loved having boys to play with ... and the boys loved him. But, what's not to love about Trooper? By the end of the evening he and the boys were exhausted. I think everyone except mom and dad slept all the way home in the car.

So Trooper has a forever home that will give him all the love that he deserves (and that's quite a bit of love).

Trooper is doing well with his house-breaking. No accidents for quite a while … as long as we are here to take him out every hour when he asks. Sometimes he asks to go out when he doesn’t really have to go just to get a cookie when he comes back in. He’s clever that way. He’s clever a lot of other ways, too.

For the last two days he has gone for a 3-mile walk with the big dogs. He really does well. His first time out he kept up without any problem and really enjoyed himself. There were sticks to be carried and sniffs that were completely new. There were also more leaves to be chased than a little puppy could possibly handle.

Yesterday he began to lag just a little in the last half-mile and gave the impression that he wouldn’t mind if he were carried. He got picked up but within just a score of steps he was wiggling and wanted to get put down. He went the rest of the way under his own power.

Another Trooper milestone; he’s conquered stairs! He is so proud of himself. But the inability to climb the stairs is what was keeping him in the lower level of the house. That’s not going to work any longer. He climbs well but coming down is a little clumsy looking. But he gets it done. And now there’s the whole new upstairs world to explore.

As you can see in the picture, Trooper has no problem with the idea of going into a crate. He will often wander in to have a little nap in the middle of the day. If it’s nighttime and he’s put into the crate he simply lies down and goes to sleep. Not a peep from him until you get him up in the morning. If it’s daytime and he gets crated he will make a few noises of protest because he knows that you are going somewhere and you are going without him. He’d rather come with than be left. But the protest doesn’t last very long. When you return, however, he will speak up to let you know that he’d like to come out.

Trooper will try his best to get to the RAGOM event in Coon Rapids on Saturday so he can see and be seen. He got so excited about meeting new people (and dogs) that he had to go have a little nap.

If you have been watching Trooper's web page we have some exciting news to share. Trooper has learned to ask to go out to go potty! He will sit near the door and just knock once or twice. What a smart boy!

(O.K., O.K. it isn't as exciting as fuel prices dropping to $1.50 or anything as exciting as an economic recovery ... but it is exciting to us. And if you're interested in adopting this little boy, it just might be exciting to you, too!)

Trooper arrived here last week and has managed to fit right in with both the girls. Judging by the size of his feet he’ll grow up to be a normal-sized Golden male. His coat will be toward the red end of the color spectrum. All Golden puppies are cute – that’s why they are featured on so many greeting cards. But Trooper … well, he’s got just a little bit extra of that cuteness factor going for him. He’s got the light-colored hair around the eyes, the big, floppy ears, the sharp, keen look of the intelligence in his eyes. He’s a charmer! He’s a hard one to put down after you pick him up!

He is not easily intimidated, evidenced by the way that he dove right in to the play between the resident dog and Goldie the foster dog. When they play he uses his small size to advantage by diving under the chairs, couch and coffee table to evade or to take a short-cut that the other dogs can’t duplicate.

He eats dry large-breed puppy kibble and eats it well. He is taking well to potty training. He spends the night in a crate with no accidents at all overnight. He cries for just a moment or two when put to bed but is quiet after that.

He spent the last two hours playing with “the girls” and everyone is tired so now it’s “nap time”. Trooper and Goldie are stretched out on the floor, sound asleep. But you can tell that they are Golden Retrievers as they are within arm’s reach of the person at the keyboard. It’s a very visual display of the meaning of the term “companion dog”. What’s not to like about that?
