Lucky 08-445

Mr. Lucky came to our house today, and what a doll he is! Lucky was a stray that wandered into the yard of a very loving family. They tried to find his owners with no luck, and took very good care of him. The vet told them that Lucky's estimated age is 1 1/2 years old, and that he weighs 40 pounds (yes - he's small, just 40 pounds full grown). As you can see in the pictures he's a real blondie and just a peanut! Lucky's good samaritans had him quite a few months before contacting RAGOM, and at that house he lived with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 kids - and he got along wonderfully with all of them. They said he's a very sweet, mellow boy, and based on what I've seen so far that is a very good description. Lucky met my cats with no problem at all. They tend to be a bit crabby, and when my cat gave Lucky "the look" (which roughly translates into: "Listen buddy, I may be small but I can puff up like a blowfish at a moment's notice and my claws could pluck out your eyeballs one at a time, got it?) -- Lucky picked up on it and backed up and looked away. He also did a great job meeting my dogs, and gets along with them great. He's unbelievably mellow for a 1.5 year old dog. No bouncing, no barking, no jumping, just calm as can be - more calm than my 8 year old golden.

I will keep posting updates as we get to know Lucky this week!

Let's see, what else did we learn about Lucky today? I'll start with last night. I don't know what it is, but there is something about being with kids at bedtime that makes all of my fosters feel safe and secure - they come running the minute we go upstairs and get out the books. Somehow they get what's going on, and they join the rest of the animals snuggling in and going to sleep. Lucky was no exception last night, and as you can see in the picture, he curled up, laid his head on my son's foot, and went to sleep. Later on he came in my bedroom and slept there without as much as a peep all night. Even when one of the slightly mentally unbalanced resident dogs woke me up at 2 a.m. in a complete panic because 2 floors away in little room a cell phone was beeping a low battery beep every 2 minutes (it's a good thing she's so cute or I'd be putting HER up for adoption...), Lucky didn't even bother getting up to see why the other dog was hyperventilating and why I had to stumble out of the room trying to remember where I'd last used the *&^D!! phone. He gets brownie points for that one, I figured he'd at least wake up and have to go to the bathroom.

Today he's been going person to person, getting us all wrapped around his little paws - every time my kids start to pet him he drops on his back and asks for a tummy rub. He's a bit of a talker too - it's so funny! I started talking back to him tonight and we had a nice little conversation, although I have no idea what we were conversing about...

Finally, a little medical update: Lucky has an undescended testicle that his vet was unable to find when he was neutered this summer, so next Monday our wonderful VSS surgeon, Dr. Lara, is going to remove it for us and make sure Lucky won't be producing any Lucky Jr's!

I can't begin to tell you what a calm little dog this is. At home, on walks - he's just one mellow dude.
