Hi RAGOM Readers!
Well Dutchess, aka Sweet Girl, Sweetness, came through her vet appointment with flying colors. Dr. Tom has never seen this extent of scoliosis of a spine before in a dog. He is amazed how well she gets along with walking, climbing stairs.....
He did want us to be aware that in all likelihood she will develop arthritis of the spine and maybe also pelvis later in life. It will be important to keep her trim and lean. Excessive weight will complicate her birth defect. She is being spayed on Friday so Dr. Tom will be doing pelvis/hip x-rays to determine her usual anatomy. Dr. Tom also did blood work to make sure all of her organs were working properly. We do know that her tongue is just fine because when Dr. Tom was examining her, Dutch gave him a Wet Willy! I have had several since too! Dutch is 40 pounds and will probably stay fairly small. She probably only has a month or two of growing yet.
Ok, now the real problem with Sweetness! She loves, loves, loves toys. And she hates them in her toy box. If I clean them up, she immediately gets the "babies" back out. She continually carries something in her mouth. If she moves in the middle of the night, a "baby" goes with her. She even uses a "baby" as a pillow. Sounds like a typical Golden to me!!!! It is amazing how a puppy with a deformed spine keeps track of all the toys that are on the floor. She loves to lay on them and knows exactly where every one of them is in the house.
She is learning commands. Sitting is not going to be one of them though. She can not sit very well, so she is either standing or laying down. She does not beg at the table and is learning her name. Since she was a stray she hasn't had this name very long.
Well, let Ragom knows if you are interested in visiting with a normal puppy who just happens to have a crooked spine!
