Rudy is a sleek and tall 12 year old golden boy. He was born on 5-31-96, but don’t let his age fool you. He is active, energetic and sharp as a tack. He has lived in the same home his whole life and he was much loved. You can sure tell that because he is calm and secure and very well behaved. Rudy gets along well with our resident dog Toby Ed 06 390 and the cats. He just needs a new place to hang his hat and he’ll settle right in.

Rudy really likes to play catch outside and knows a lot of commands. He stays in the yard (unfenced) for the most part but made a social visit to the neighbor’s flower garden to smell the moss roses. He leisurely walked back when I reminded him where the boundaries were.

He loves to be brushed and is gentle with everyone. He plays with our resident boy (15) and has lived with two year olds in his last home so he is used to children.

There are no behaviors we have noticed and he is an all around lovely guy who is melting our hearts.

When we got him on Saturday there was a note in his file that stated “he has a sensitive stomach, so no treats”. What they should have said (and I don’t mean to be indelicate) is…“he farts like a rock star!”. We switched his food and he seems to be better but definitely no milkbones if you want to kick back and watch a long video.

“Rudy Patootie” is scheduled for the vet on Monday and will do his check-up and I’ll ask about the gas.

I’ll update soon but I have a feeling this beautiful purebred Golden lovebug will have nothing but sweet stories until he finds his forever home.

Old man, take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you. I need someone to love me the whole day through. (Neil Young singing to Rudy 08-309)

Rudy is an old man... but he is a gentle soul full of love. He is coming up on 14 and he has a little bit of a hard time getting up and about despite the Rymadil (for arthritis). Once he is up on his long legs, he does fine, most evenings he even walks up the stairs when we go up to bed. He likes a soft dog bed in every room and a regular schedule. Like many other seniors he can have a little problem with his daily regularity so we try to keep his diet and routine the same.

Rudy has tried out a couple families but it didn't work out reportedly because of his unpredictable pooping accidents. He should not go to a forever family with forever carpet. He is not aggressive at all but young children might be too rough for him. He does fine with our resident teenager and loves nothing more than sleeping until noon on the weekends right beside Zac.

Rudy is a friend of our resident golden and resident cat. He is a voracious eater and an even more voracious, ahem, farter. He has a seriously sensitive digestive system that earned him the nickname, Rudy Patootie.

Rudy would love to find a quiet forever home that had a very flexible schedule to let him out when he feels the urge to go. He walks right up to you and gives a little head nod toward the door to go out - we have learned to take those cues seriously.

He is a loyal companion and a good friend. If you would like to consider Rudy, let the Ragom team know you'd like to meet this lovely senior. He is waiting for someone to love him his whole life through.

Rudy had a relaxing Christmas and enjoyed the festivities. He especially enjoyed his new chew bone and stuffed mallard. What he is really looking forward to though, is New Years eve, because then it will be very close to the day that he goes to meet his potential family. Rudy has been such a dear boy waiting and waiting for his forever family to find him way up here in Northern Minnesota. The northern lights were shining on the snow last night and Rudy was gazing up at them dreaming his Golden dreams (then he peed on a snowman and came inside).

We started calling him Snowbaby because he loves to go outside, roll in the snow and comes back to the door with his head completely covered in white. He makes us laugh every time. Our college girl is home for break and although she doesn't adore Goldens as much as the rest of us (because they get hair on everything she owns) she has taken quite the shine to old Rudy and he follows her everywhere. She uses him as a footstool when she's on the computer and he thinks its just swell.

The champagne and noisemakers are ready for Wednesday night but the real celebration will be when Rudy 08-309 gets to drop the numbers from his name and finds a family to call his own. 2009 will be a good year for this special fuzzbutt.

As I read the posts from Ragom folks about what they have to be thankful for this year, I think of many of the same things. Health, family, friends, and of course Goldens; we are truly blessed with them all. As our family sits back and reflects on our blessings in 2008 there will always be certain dogs that have touched us in one way or another. Rudy is one of those dogs. He is a quiet dignified senior with a hint of whimsy in his step. He reminds us everyday that we are lucky to be fostering him. He is a funny boy now that the weather is cold, he stays outside for fewer minutes and then gives his one little bark to come back in. Then it’s straight to the corn stove to warm his old bones, he’ll lie on the rug and stare into the fire with a contented look on his face and then fall asleep for a nap. He takes excellent naps and I join him as often as I can.

He is a joy to have in our house but a true blessing for him - would be a real home to call his own.

“I kissed a squirrel and I liked it” (Not to be confused with Katie Perry’s summer hit song.) Rudy lies so quiet under the tree in the yard that squirrels almost kiss him. I know the cats do. Everyone loves Rudy.

Rudy is going to go in for a check next week on his stiff joints – the weather seems to be making him a little hesitant about getting up and down, just a little slow, but he still has a smile on his face no matter what. He walks around three blocks every day and always wants to get the leash on – he never pulls or runs ahead. When we get back home he goes straight to his dog bed for a nice long nap, he is for sure dreaming of kissing squirrels in the yard of his forever home somewhere in his future.

Rudy had a great week at our house. He loves to stick his nose out of the window on car rides and we had many stellar adventures. He went to the school and met the drivers ed instructor, we went to the credit union to get some cash, we went to the post office to get the mail. He came inside at every stop and was polite and quite the show off every time. Someone must have taught him to bat his eyelashes and tilt his head when he hears, “Aren’t you a pretty boy?” He would “sit” and “shake” when asked.
He was a brave little soldier at the vet where he got his microchip and a heartworm test (negative). He greeted all the other dogs there with a waggy tail and a sniff, big dogs… little dogs… cats… he didn’t care; everyone is a potential friend to Mr. Rudy. The vet said to just keep him on a high quality consistent diet and his tummy will be fine and he has been MUCH better.

The most recent highlight was a birthday party for the resident 15 year old boy on Tuesday night. Six 15 year olds and Rudy was right in there on the scavenger hunt. My son warned everyone “no treats for him or you will be sorry” (remember the flatulence situation?). It appears that he is not used to treats though so he doesn’t beg at all. He has been stink free for 4 days thanks to his new diet. He lay quietly to watch “The Mist” and was happy to be part of the festivities. 

Mr. Rudy likes to nap on a dog bed on the floor and doesn’t show any interest in getting up on the sofa or bed to sleep. Toby Ed watches from the chair and says “hey, buddy we can get on the furniture here” but Rudy just lounges on the big round dog bed happy to watch the world go by while waiting for his forever home to find him.

He honestly is the youngest senior dog I’ve ever seen – the only part of him that looks old are his teeth – they are worn down a bit as if he was a rock chewer but I haven’t seen him chewing anything hard. He likes a fuzzy turkey toy. He has a slightly white face but for the most part is a beautiful light red. He has a distinctive beauty mark on his face (mole) that gives him a mature John Boy Walton look. You couldn’t ask for a nicer dog friend, so take a closer look at Rudy if you are in the market for a loyal companion that will give you his heart. I guarantee that he will steal yours.

Just one last thing and this could be important to note: We visited some friends outside of town and he didn’t chase the chickens. Very amazing quality for a non farm dog. OK, I kept him on his leash, but still he didn’t get a crazy look in his eye and want to eat them. He just watched thoughtfully and then sniffed the ones that walked by him. (I’ll bring the camera next time).

Take a look at Rudy – city dog – farm dog – he’ll be a good boy where ever he ends up (as long as there are no crazy processed artificial dog treats and there are plenty of belly rubs).
