Dixie 07-526

Profile

9/11/07: "Green Acres Dixie" has made the long trek from a puppy mill in Arkansas to RAGOM.  She came along with a caravan of other puppy mill dogs and a few dogs rescued from a shelter in Missouri.  Upon her arrival, she was vetted, bathed, and kept overnight at the intake facility.  You see, Dixie hadn't found a foster home to go to!

Poor Dixie girl is still without a foster home so was moved to doggy daycare where she can spend her days playing and socializing with other dogs and people.  She immediately became a staff favorite as she is playful with all the other dogs, comes when called, is a quiet girl and an excellent listener.

Dixie is just finishing her heat cycle so will be able to be spayed in about 3-4 weeks.  Hopefully, she will find a foster very soon who can keep her through that time period, see her through her spay surgery, and then find her the perfect home.

Dixie will make a great second dog for some lucky family.  She walks well on leash but enjoys off leash play time and wrestle time with other dogs.  She also loves to play with toys (ball, tug rope, etc...) and is quickly learning to fetch.

Because of Dixie's background, she can be a bit nervous/timid in new situations.  She will need a family who is willing to be patient with her and understand that she has had a rough start in life.  I am certain she would love to take obedience classes and would be great at agility as she is lean and quick with her movements!

If you are willing to wait for the love of you life and think Dixie might be a good match for your family, please email placementatragom [dot] org.

I'm cute huh?  I knew you'd see the cuteness in my silly pictures!  Foster mom just got back today from a few days out of town.  Boy I was happy to see her and I showed her by wagging my tail so fast and guess what else?  Instead of jumping on her for more attention - like I used to do - I know that when I sit patiently I will get much more lovin, so that's what I did.  Foster mom was really happy with this and I got so much love!

I had a little fun while foster mom was gone.  Usually foster mom and dad let both Tucker and I out together and we all go outside.  Seeing that foster mom was gone, foster dad was at a disadvantage.  Tucker and me versus foster dad.  And guess who won?  Yup, me and Tucker.  We saw foster dad opening the front door and we looked at each other and said "hey, lets go for it."  And we did, we both ran past him and out the front door without being attached to a lead.  I think if foster dad had a tail it would have been tucked so far between his legs he was that scared!  He was so scared I'd run and never come back.  But you know what I did instead?  I listened.  Yup, that's right, I listened the FIRST time!  He said "Hey Dixie, come" and I did.   Man was he relieved.  I wouldn't say I'm reliable off lead, and I know that foster mom and dad aren't going to let that stunt happen again.

I'm sure you've noticed that I don't have many of the PM characteristics you'd think I have.  Sure I may warm up a little slower, but once I trust you, I love you and I'll be showing you every single day for the rest of my life.  My forever family is going to be lucky because their love tank will never be anything less than full!

If you have any questions about me or think you might be my forever family you know how to reach me!

See ya!

Dixie Pie Honey Bunch (foster mom sings that to me, not very well I might add, but I wag my tail fast anyway.  Hey, she supports me and I support her right back!)

I figured out what toys are for!Have I mentioned I love tiny tennis balls?Have to keep my eye on these squeaky toys. I'm not ready for bed yet!Ok... now I'm ready!

Dixie pie is doing so great!   We knew there was a dog inside of Dixie somewhere and now she's letting it all out!  She did her first play bow the other morning, she loves to roll around in the grass, she snorts and groans like a cow when rolling around feels so good, and she's ALWAYS got something in her mouth.  She's especially fond of digging my socks out of the laundry basket J   It's so fun to see her opening up and becoming such a funny dog.  She's definitely a joy to have around the house.  It warms my heart and brings many smiles to my face to see her enjoying life and learning about what a dogs life is supposed to be like.  She's like a tall, 3 year old puppy that's housebroken.  So much is new to her and it's so fun to see her experience things for the first time.  And she's so expressive!  No poker playing for this girl!  Her eyes give her away in an instant!  Her delight in things rubs off on the rest of us and before you know it we're all involved in what Dixie is doing!    Aside from being a funny, goofy dog, she's also such a little helper - and by little I mean tall with a really big head!  She especially likes to help me do the "lady" things around the house like fold laundry, make the bed, and especially cook.  She's tall enough to steal things off the counter which might be why cooking seems to be her favorite thing!  But she listens pretty well and when I tell her to "leave it" -  most of the time she does.  When she's done helping me she usually moseys over to foster dad to help with grad school homework and provide some emotional support.         Aside from getting along with foster mom and dad famously Dixie and Tucker have also formed a strong bond.  You'd think they'd been living together for years.  They are so happy together.  Whether they are playing and chasing or just laying close to one another chewing on bones.  The other night when we had some thunder and lightening Dixie looked a little startled and decided it would be better to nap right by Tucker.  I really think she feels safe because she can tell he feels safe.  Which is why Dixie's forever family must have another fur butt.   Another mini milestone is that Dixie is now given free roam of the house at night.  For the most part she does really well.  She hasn't quite mastered how to jump on the bed with out colliding with one of us.  And at times she misjudges the edge and her back end slips off.  Both of which are a little funny to watch!  Once safely on the bed, she settles down nicely and enjoys some pets before going to bed.    Dixie only has a few bad habits that we're working on.  She's a little mouthy.  But only because she is so desperate for attention and it's mainly when we come home from work and she hasn't seen us in a while.  She also loves to dance/hug.  Which means that she likes to stand up and rest her front paws up on foster mom or dad's chest.  Our bad habit is that when she does this she is so incredibly cute that sometimes we hug her and dance.  So this is really our fault and we're working on our bad habits too!      One last cute thing and then I'll stop rambling on about our Dixie girl.  She's figured out where the water comes from.  Now if she's thirsty and the bowl is empty she politely lets us know by looking from the fridge to the bowl and back again.  Not sure if she learned this from resident fur butt or on her own.  Regardless, she learned it and she learned it quick!    Dixie is going to make some family very happy and very lucky!  Until she finds that family she'll continue to make ours brighter each day!   Here are some more pictures of this stunning gal.  The pictures never seem to do her justice.  And I usually catch her when she's sleepy.    Here she is napping on the couch with Tucker.  Dixie settling down and getting ready for bed.  Finally an action shot where I actually got her in the picture -  running down the hallway... as you can see she still needs to put on some more weight!

Hello RAGOM fans!      I've been with my foster family for almost a week now and it's going really well.  I have had a few health set backs but nothing major.  I have Coccidia and am on medicine for it.  Just means I get cheese with medicine for the next week.  And now my ear infections are gone; yeay!  So the only thing left do to is get my teeth cleaned and get spayed.  I'm excited for the teeth cleaning.  I'm going to have such nice pearly whites.  Not too sure about being spayed but foster mom assures me it will be ok and I will be babied and loved even more after, and hey, who can argue with more love?  Not me!     I'll be ready for adoption after I recover from my spay surgery; around late October.  But that doesn't mean I can't meet you now!  And you might want to hurry!  I hear foster mom and dad talking about me a lot.  I think they really wish they could keep me.     We talk about my forever family and here's what we've come up with:

  • A fenced yard is a must.  I will be so happy to run free without a lead or leash attached.
  • I need a dog sister or brother.  I will probably be a little nervous in my new home and with my new fur sibling and I may growl a bit if they want my toys/bones or try to sniff me too much.  But that only lasts a day or so.  Then I remember my manners and share my toys and like to play and cuddle.  Just ask Tucker!  He was worried I didn't like him and now one of our favorite things is napping on foster mom's bed together or running around with one end of the toy in my mouth and the other end in his.  But the main reason I need a fur sibling is because I will take a lot of cues from them and they make me feel more comfortable.
  • I really like kids so a family with kids would great too but not a necessity.  I like to kiss their cute little faces, especially if they just ate something yummy!
  • I like to chase small animals so a house without small pets is also a must.  No bunnies please.  I can't resist the temptation to chase them.  I'm not sure about cats yet, but I may meet one soon and I'll let you know how that goes.

Want to know what I bring to the table?  Lots!  Here goes:

  • I'm house broken.  Haven't had one accident!  I prance and get antsy when I have to go.
  • I do really well in a kennel.  I don't bark or whine at all.  I just get really excited when you let me out and wag my tail really fast and groan when you pet me.
  • I have shorter fur and don't shed a lot!  Which means less vacuuming.  Which is good, those things are loud!
  • I am a love bug.  I love all kinds of affection, from butt scratches, hugs, kisses on my nose, and snuggling, to scratching my head and behind my ears.  And if you lay down I will lay with you and cuddle.
  • I walk really really well on a leash and enjoy my walks very much.
  • I don't chew on inappropriate things.
  • I'm smart too!  I know my name, and I'm pretty good with "sit".  I'm also learning "go potty", "down", "wait", and "leave it".  I'm treat motivated so it makes me easy to teach.
  • I'm gaining weight and looking better than ever!!!

If you think you might be my forever home you can email placementatragom [dot] org ( )and let them know you'd like to meet me.

Hi everyone!  It's me, Dixie.  I found a foster home this week and they came to get me today!  It was almost like I knew they were there for me.  I greated them with a wagging tail and jumped up into their arms.  They said I was as sweet as can be!  My foster mom told me that everyone would like to know a little bit more about me, so here goes.  I am 3 year old purebred Golden, a little skinny, and very friendly!  My foster mom keeps telling me that I am such a beautiful light golden color... which I guess is good!  I am UTD on my shots and have some blood work pending from the vet.  Some of the other puppy mill dogs came in with some tick borne diseases but we're not sure if I have them.  Regardless, they are treatable so if I do have them I'll have to do is take some meds - which I hear from the resident dog involves cheese and apparently cheese is good so it might not be so bad!  After that I have to be spayed, so I'm not available for adoption just yet, but hang tight and I'll keep you updated on me!    My first day in foster care was filled with new stuff.  When we got home I got to meet the resident dog, Tucker.  He's a Border Collie/Blue Heeler and has funny spots on him but we sniffed a bit and decided it was all good.  Then foster mom and dad took us for a really long walk.  I got to see the new neighborhood and impress foster mom and dad with my leash walking abilities.  Foster dad kept saying that he couldn't believe how well I was doing!  I think I might have even showed up the resident dog!  I wanted to meet all the people we walked by and I saw a few bunnies.  They seem like they would be really fun to chase!  When we got back I decided to do some more exploring of the house.  There are these things called toys all over the place.  The resident dog likes to carry them around and even brought a few over to me.  I'm not sure what he wanted me to do with them... but I did pick one up and it made a funny noise that intrigued me!  I don't know how I did it, or what it was, but I'm going to try and make it do it again!  So to up my chances I brought a bunch of them over to my new favorite place - they call it a dog bed.  I don't care what they call it!  I say those things a like little slices of heaven!  Ok, gotta go snuggle in my slice of heaven with my new toys.  Catch ya later!   Dixie
