This puppy mill girl arrived in MN last night about 9PM.I have never been at a Puppy Mill intake before and it was quite emotional and amazing. Seeing the dogs unloaded was a very sad/happy sight. Even after all that they had been through there were still tails wagging! Unbelievable.

I was assigned to a girl who was born in 10/2003 and looks like she has recently had puppies. She is very calm and gentle. I called her Truly, as she is truly sweet and truly lovely. While we waited to see the vet she kept giving me her paw. She was still in a crate, but really craved the contact. I stuck my hand through the wires and held her paw or her head while we waited.

She is covered in scabs and has a nasty puncture wound in her left hind quarter. There are other signs of her having been bitten by dogs. Even in the midst of the noise and the strangeness of her surroundings, she was calm. The vet said that her heart rate was steady and much slower than the other dogs. She weighs 65 pounds, but she very thin and malnourished. She was filthy, but the wonderful RAGOM volunteers got her bathed and the worst of the mats and clumps trimmed off. She took the whole process very well.

Since she obviously had had fleas I am keeping her from my dogs for 24 hours until the flea treatment takes affect. She spent last night in the kitchen and at some time during the night she had diarrhea. The poor girl even though she is calm on the outside, the stress, antibiotics  and change in diet will take their toll. She is surprisingly brave and has put her paws on the barrier keeping the dogs apart. She has not barked, or scotched, she just looks over the top. She stood very still while I brushed her and got some of the loose scabs out of her coat.

I will get her to the vet ASAP for a more in thorough exam, especially of the puncture wound. She is TRULY a wonderful dog.
