Lucy (Amy 07-521)

Profile

Amy was rescued from a puppy mill in Arkansas. She is four years old and quite petite. When I first met Amy, I was prepared to meet a typical shy and frightened puppy mill dog. However, much to my delight, Amy is very social, sweet and playful. She follows me everywhere and is constantly nudging me for pets. Last night I slept with her on the futon and she cuddled up against me all night (no accidents). She gets along great with the other dogs, but she hasn't noticed the cats yet. Despite her ordeal, Amy seems to be in overall good health. But we will have her checked by our wonderful RAGOM vet, Dr. K., to make sure all is well.

Amy won the silly prize again this week. I've never seen a dog have so much fun with a pair of old sneakers! She ran back and forth across the yard gleefully throwing a sneaker high in the air, pouncing on it, and then giving it the "death shake" (though I'm pretty sure the sneakers were already dead). And she still loves to chase just about anything and everything that moves outside. One day I looked out of the window to check on her and all I could see was a golden tail sticking out from under our shed. When she finally came out she looked more like a black lab than a golden retriever. Amy is a very happy girl!

Amy will be spayed ~ October 15 and then she will be ready for critter removal duty at her forever home!

Amy was checked by Dr. K. and all is well. She weighed in at 64 lbs which is perfect for her. The only minor problem he found is an ear infection which will be treated over the next few days. Also, her fur is a little thin (and has been clipped in some areas), but it will grow back now that she is on a healthy diet. Because Amy came from a puppy mill, Dr. K. also used ultrasound to make sure that she is not pregnant, so we will be able to have her spayed soon.

Amy continues to get along great with the other dogs and she has finally noticed the cats. So far, all she does is bark at them. And she plays very nicely with our four-year-old daughter, Abigail. Our backyard is littered with dog toys and everyday Amy, Abigail and I enjoy a rousing game of "pick up every toy and throw it, chase it and run away with it to hide it in the flower garden so Mom has to go find it". Okay...so it's not a real game...but we have lots of fun! And at the end of the day, when Amy is all tucked in, I give her a little massage and she says "Mmmmmm...mmmmmm". I think it's her way of saying "thank you for loving me".
