Coris arrived safely in Minneapolis Sunday evening after a long ride up from Missouri. She and 4 other GR's were bought at a puppy mill auction by a rescue organization and handed over to RAGOM. Coris is a beautiful female 6 yo red Golden whose days as a breeder will be ending tomorrow when she will be spayed. Hurray for Coris!
 
Coris is settling in and here's what I know so far: she LOVES human attention, comes for pets and puts her head in my lap. She knows the sit command and responds to "back' when she gets too close. She handled her bath like a pro, is crate trained and has been exploring the house. Coris is not too fond of my resident RAGOM Golden's yet and they are giving her space. She was grumpy at their initial greeting last night but who wouldn't be after such a long trip? Today the growling has much diminished although she won't play with resident Skye no matter how much he play bows! She does like to fetch a ball or rope though (see photo)
 
Coris got a clean bill of health at the vet today--even her ears were clean. She is a big girl weighing in at 80 pounds which the vet said was at the top of the range but OK. Hopefully, with better food and a little exercise she'll trim down a couple. More later as I get to know her better.

Here's an update from Coris--now Sienna's new family.
 

"Things are going just great with our new dog, who we have renamed “Sienna” in honor of her rich red color.  I think she probably misses her doggie friends at your place, and you too!  But we are lavishing affection on her and letting her follow us everywhere.  She’s been out in the yard a lot, whenever we are both out.  I put up the Invisible Fence flags to give her something to see to help her learn the yard.  So far, we’ve just called her back when she gets over the line.  She likes to chase sticks and we have a lot of those.  She’s also been fetching her ball, the babies, and her new pull rope thing. 

 

Yesterday we walked her with just the leash on her collar and she did like to pull some.  We took her around the block in the neighborhood and in the car to a nearby lake.  There we tried teaching her to swim – she was so hot!  We threw the ball into the water a little farther and farther until she swam.  At that point, she turned around and swam back and lost track of the ball, so Michael had to wade in to get it!  We called it quits for then, but she seemed much cooler and later waded in willingly to get at least her feet wet'.

Coris smiled today! It brought tears to my eyes. It was the first time I'd seen that special relaxed, happy Golden smile and it was wonderful. She is settling in to the routine at our house. She even played tug-of-war for a short time with my resident Skye today. She is fully house trained and is not resource guarding unless she has a juicy bone. She will let me take it but not the other dogs. Coris is not a high energy dog but does enjoy fetching a frisbee--she can catch it mid air! Her foster brother and sister wait for it to drop. Maybe she will teach them the fine art of frisbee shagging! She's not really interested in the kiddie pool but does let me hose the mud off her belly when she comes out from under the deck caked in mud. She has let me touch all parts of her body--ears, paws, mouth, hind end-without any problems. She loves to ride in the car. I don't think she is a runner since she nosed her way out the gate after me and stayed right with me till I got her leashed.
 
For the first several days here, Coris was hoarding things and whimpering. She first claimed her crate as her place to hoard and wouldn't allow my dogs near it. Then she moved to the dining room under the kitchen table and would come running from the other room if she thought Skye was interested in her horded items. Now today--there has been NONE of that. The area under the dining room table is clear and she is not hoarding a pile of things. I don't know if that was related to her recent pregnancy or stress or hormones but I am happy to see her relaxed.
 
Coris will go to the vet tomorrow to have her paw stitches removed--she never bothered them--and to have her ears rechecked. She has a few days left on the antibiotics and hopefully the vet will say that they look better.
 
She is a very loving GR and it is wonderful to have her here.

Coris went to the vet on Tuesday for her spay. RAGOM had been told that she had her last litter in March of this year. However, during her spay the vet found a dead puppy and it was clear that she had a litter much more recently. This poor puppy never delivered with the rest. That might explain why she wonders around the house with soft toys in her mouth and whimpers. She also will not let my RAGOM boy Skye near her crate--even when she isn't in it.
 
The vet got a good look at her ears while she was under and discovered she does have an ear infection. A small lump on her paw was removed, biopsied and is benign (yay!). So she is on antibiotics for the next two weeks.
 
Now the good stuff! Coris has definitely had some human attention and training as she knows the basic commands--'sit', 'down' 'come'. She also walks well on the leash with minimal tugging and just requires minor correction to get her not to pull when she sees a squirrel. She really loves to chase a tennis ball but is not obsessed about it. And she doesn't really RUN after it--more like TROTS after it. Coris loves people and approaches strangers respectfully--fully expecting everyone to love her. She is becoming part of the household pack and rarely gives a growl anymore. She still won't play with my dogs or neighbor dog Sammy who comes over several times a day. Maybe she wasn't socialized with other dogs. Or maybe she is still protective after her recent pregnancy and her travels to get to RAGOM.
 
She had spent a little time with two 7 year old boys before coming into RAGOM and was fine with them but I don't have kids so haven't witnessed it. I think she would be fine with them. I'm also not sure how she would be with cats but she is interested in squirrels on her walks.
 
Coris is a lover and a beauty! She just wants to be snuggled. In fact, it's hard to get a picture of her because she want to be so close! If you are interested in a snuggly, mellow golden contact RAGOM about this beauty!
