Buddy Joe 07-475

Profile

Buddy-Joe arrived at our place last night and he made himself right at home immediately.  He was greeted by my three very excited kids and loved all the attention!  I provided the last leg of his transport and he was wonderful in the car.  We saw the vet today and Buddy-Joe weighed in at a whopping 100 pounds!  He looks more like a Lab right now, due to his short summer cut and his bulky frame.  We’ll start working on shedding those extra pounds!  He came with a minor scratch on his eye that we will continue to treat with ointment.  He was a trooper at the vet's—very calm throughout the whole examination with shots and microchipping.  He is neutered and up to date on his shots.  Except for the eye scratch, he has no health concerns.

Buddy is a total love-bug—he just loves everyone!  He is 13 months old, knows some basic commands and comes when called.  He is crate-trained and housebroken.  He slept in his kennel last night and we didn’t hear a peep out of him all night.  I was starting to wonder if he barked at all, but he did bark to tell my daughter that he really, really wanted a bite of her peanut butter sandwich!  On walks he pulls some on his leash, so we’ll try the Gentle Leader next time and see if that helps.  He has lots of energy outside and on walks, but inside he likes to sprawl out near me, then come and nudge me for some petting.  Like a typical Golden, he likes to have something in his mouth all the time.  He loves his toys and everything else he finds—this morning he was waltzing around the house with a little pink purse!  It is thundering and lightning outside as I’m typing this and Buddy is unfazed by the thunder.  He perked his head up, listened and went back to sleep.  He is such a great boy!

From Buddy's forever family...

We wanted to send an update on Buddy, as he has been such a wonderful addition to our family. His laid-back personality really shines through, and he loves to play with our lab and 2 kids. Even our cats now snuggle up to him when they want to nap! Buddy is never far from one of his human family members, often with a plushie in tow. Life with two dogs is certainly crazy, but we wouldn't have it any other way! Thank you, RAGOM, for helping find new homes for these wonderful furry people!

After spending a week in foster care, it’s obvious Buddy is a very easy-going guy! Buddy came to RAGOM because his previous family was moving into a rental house where dogs weren’t allowed.

Here is a quick rundown of Buddy’s "golden" qualifications and traits:

  • 100% house trained & crate trained.
  • Great with kids -- we have a rambunctious 4 year old boy and 8 & 10 year old girls. Buddy has been absolutely great with them.
  • Good with other dogs. We don't have a resident dog here, but Buddy had a playdate last week with two other goldens and also spent the weekend at another foster home and got along well with those dogs. He plays very much like a puppy; full of energy but takes “reprimands” from other dogs when he's getting on their nerves!
  • Good with cats. I have not tested this myself, but his intake papers said he was good with cats.
  • Rarely barks. If you’re outside and he’s inside or vice versa, he will bark because he wants to be with you!! However, I have never heard him bark when he’s in his crate.
  • Walks great on the Gentle Leader. He will pull with a collar, but he has been awesome with the Gentle Leader!
  • Happy-go-lucky disposition
  • Will give you unconditional love and be a true companion!

Of course, no dog is perfect and Buddy has a few things to work on. He jumps on you when he’s excited (and he’s one big dog!) but we’re working on that and he’s learning that if he wants attention he needs to “sit”! He’ll chew on inappropriate items if given the opportunity--my kids listen now when I tell them to pick up their stuff! He likes to lounge on the furniture, but gets off with an easy “no”. It’s hard to tell if Buddy is a purebred golden or a mix of Golden & Lab. He has all the other qualifications of a golden, but it will take a few months to see if his coat fills back in like a golden.

After visiting with the vet again last week about Buddy’s eye, it appears that the eye scratch has healed and the problem may be his lower eyelid. The vet suspects that Buddy has a condition which makes his lower eyelid turn inward, which obviously causes a lot of discomfort and makes him squint and rub at his eye. If Buddy does have this condition, he will need surgery to correct it. We will talk to the vet again this week and keep you updated!
