This handsome fellow is Pete.  Pete came to our home last night from the Missouri puppy mill rescue.  He was the main stud dog there and was socialized pretty well.  He is 2 1/2 years old, of medium build (but has a large head and paws!).  He is 68 pounds with a long flowing coat.  He is a very calm, cautious young boy, and he is very sweet.  He met our resident dogs and it went very well.  Our dogs are both female, so he was very happy to see them.  He also saw both of our cats, he did growl, but then ignored them when they didn't pose a threat.  He likes our kids, he licks their hands and toes and allows them to pet him.  He doesn't seem to know steps, so that is a small hurdle that we will need to get over, but he seems to get better each time we try.  He also hasn't eaten much, he is not food motivated, so we will have to get creative with ways to get him to eat.  He did eat some ham and he took it out of my fingers way nicer than my two dogs.  He had a bath at intake last night, and then we gave him another one this morning.  He has this strong smell about him, it doesn't seem to be in his coat, so I'm wondering if he has an ear infection.  I cleaned out his ears, and he was very appreciative.  Once I must have hit a good spot with the Q-tip as his back leg did a little dance.  I will be bringing him in to the vet as soon as I can get in, and will also set up an appointment for him to be neutered.  We took him out to our back yard and gave him the brushing of his lifetime.  It looked like it snowed back there!!!  He enjoyed it very much and even rolled on to his back!  We spent some time out on our deck this afternoon, and he was scratching at our back screen door.  We didn't want him in without us, so we would gently tell him no.  Well, he didn't like that, so he pawed out the corner of the screen and let himself in!!  He now has his own homemade doggy door, which we will need to fix quickly so we don't lose our cats!  Over all, he is a very gentle and kind dog, no potty accidents as we are keeping a very close eye on him.  I'll post more as we get to know this big sweetie.

Pete went to the vet this morning.  Before we left, I had to lift him into the truck, so we'll have to work on his car rides.  At the vet, he was found to have bad infections in both ears, and an infection in his 'nether' region.  He will be taking antibiotics for both infections, and they should clear up, along with his smell!  He is adjusting well, he now goes down our front 3 steps without hesitation, and will also now go up our 15 deck steps with some baby talk.  We'll keep working on going down them.  He is finally relaxing enough inside the house and has started laying down on our kitchen floor (before he would only lay down outside, or in his crate).  He is also a toy hoarder.  I threw a bunch of toys on the floor, and one by one he would bring them back to his crate.  It's the cutest thing.  He also started to chew on a bone while he was laying on the kitchen floor, a great milestone!  So far he has had 2 accidents on the carpet, both times when he got caught, he got a 'No' and then he skulked off to his crate for a self-imposed hour timeout.  Hopefully, once he is neutered he will stop 'marking' his territory.  He hasn't barked much, but when he has, it is very quiet and hoarse, which leads me to suspect he has been debarked.  The vet said he could check for sure when he is in for his neuter.  He is a VERY sweet boy, he has never shown any aggression, just sweet gentleness.  I can barely walk him, as he is always turning around and bumping into me to get more hugs and kisses.  Also, he doesn't pull on his leash, and heels very well.  This is probably because he is part Velcro.  Even though we haven't known him but for 3 days, he will probably be great in a home either with or without kids, dogs or cats.  He gets along well with all of them.  He also isn't so dependent on my other dogs, so he might be OK in a home without other dogs.  This guy won't be a foster for long after he is neutered!
