Good morning from an exhausted 3 year old named Shanna and her 10 pups plus Toes.  Shanna made it to Apple Valley sometime during the middle of the night.  Let’s just tell you this little angel’s story.

Shanna left her home with 35 other Golden Retrievers.  The transport group left at 11:00 Saturday morning with a caravan of three cars.  Shanna was getting so much love and comfort she decided that at 4:45 she would start having her puppies – yep, on the transport to Minnesota.  So her guardian angels (Maria and Bonnie) pulled off to the side of the road to get Nurse Bonnie in the back to help mom.  The birthing process begins.  Bonnie is in this tight little cramped area helping mom give birth to four more pups – so a total of 5 by 7:50.  Bonnie and Maria arrive at Golden Valley Animal Humane Society where Dr. A. and Dr. G. are waiting for them so they can look at Shanna and decide what is best for her and the pups.

The decision is made to get her to an emergency room, so we load her up in foster moms’ car with three helpers, and off we go.  We arrive to take a picture and find out how many more pups – that would be 6 more to go.  A shot is given to see if that will help.  The doctors and nurses tell us to go ahead and just do everything knowing they are outside the door if we need them.  Two more are born 20 minutes apart.  A second shot is given at 10:50 – a little boy is born at 11:01 and does not make it.  Tears are flowing in the room; we tried our best and handed this little ½ pound boy over to the vet tech and tell her we need just a minute.

Back to it – one more shot and nothing. By this time it is midnight and Shanna wants to sleep.  So we let her, and the decision is made to do a “C” section. She has 3 pups to go – at 1:00 we get Shanna up for a little walk and she has another girl.  Wow, let's see if she will do the other two. Now it's 3 and nothing, no more putting it off.  The last little girl and boy are born at 3:50.

At 6 a.m. I walk into the house to tell hubby all about it and he says to get in the shower--we need to bring her home.  The Newfs will help watch over her and Sophee will be a pain, so let's do it.   So at 7:30, showered and smelling a whole lot better  (yes, I was very ripe from all this birthing smell), we went back and Rick was able to meet lovely Shanna and her pups, who were going to be named after “T” spices until she decided to have 11!  But don’t forget she will still have 11 pups because of our orphan girl – Toes – okay Bootsie.  She is 14 days old today and desperately needs a mom and Shanna asked graciously if she could be it.

We came home this morning at 8 and met the Newfs and met Sophee the Golden.  Everyone loved each other and Coal is watching over mom and the pups so Sophee does not get to close.

We hope that in the next day or so Shanna will walk for us instead of us carrying her and will also eat.  Time will be our guide.  So if you are willing to wait around for this little girl who does give kisses, please let placement know.  She will be ready to go in 8 weeks. You can contact placement at placementatragom [dot] org.

Sweet Shanna is at her new home and living the good life! She went to visit Steve, Lynda and the fur dogs several times before she made the final move and it seemed to work. She is home!

Thank you everyone!

Shanna continues to grow each and every day. This past weekend she learned how to play fetch, thanks to Sophee Bear. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen.  Sophee and Cindee our daughter were out playing outside, so I brought Shanna out on her leash to see what she would do. Shanna kept looking at me wondering if maybe she should race after the ball too.  So I thought, let's give this a try. Let's take her off the leash for the first time and see if she tries to find a hole to hide in.

Cindee called Sophee back and tossed the ball as far as she could – Shanna bolted right after Sophee! Sophee kept nudging Shanna to make her follow back to the house. They both came back and we did it again 3 more times. Shanna had a ball!  She did so well and we are so proud of her!

We no longer bring her out on a leash, but we bring it with us just in case she gets scared and feels she needs to dig a hole to escape. Potty training is going well. We only have accidents when we do not bring her out right after she gets out of her play area with her puppies. Shanna will definitely need a crate. As you can see from this picture, Shanna has taken over the puppies' crate. Yes, this is a SMALL crate and she really needs a medium to large, but she would rather be in this one. Her big crate is right next to this one!

Shanna is looking for her forever home and is ready to head there now. She would love a fenced yard and another dog to show her the way. I know her family is out there; could it be your family?  If you are interested in this wonderful mellow little girl, please let Placementatragom [dot] org know and we will set up a meeting.

Wow, what a week will do for a puppy mill dog. Shanna is doing great! She continues to love her puppies and treat them with great respect. She still cannot feed them, but she does lie with them and let them attach to her for comfort.

Shanna continues to love her evening walks and finds them easier and easier to go on. Last night we went by a car and she just kept walking, wagging her tail like she had done it 100 times. Shanna is now eating and drinking on her own from a bowl--this is a huge step!

She still wants to find a home of her own and really wants to live the Golden life. Do you think you have enough love in your heart to have a very mellow girl come into your life? Shanna has no problems with other dogs and is learning a lot from our girls. However, she is learning both the bad and good habits.

Please, if you would like to meet Shanna, let placementatragom [dot] org know and we will get together.

Shanna is doing great and continues to amaze all of us. She now goes to the door and waits patiently while we get her leash on. She goes trotting outside and does her business. Shanna no longer tries to crawl under the pink shed to hide. If given the opportunity she would probably love that, but in the last few days we have come a long way. On Wednesday she had enough milk for the full day to feed her pups, which was a great relief for all of us. However that only lasted a day. But we are hopeful it will start again.

Shanna now goes on very short walks three or four times a day. She is really starting to love these walks as long as there are no people outside. She did fine when a car went by us. She got nervous but nothing I could not help her through. She will tell you when it is time to come home.

As for potty training, she will NOT go in her area – she has a large 10' x 8' area for her and the pups. She will do her very sad bark when she needs to go out. However, if she is unsupervised and loose in the house, she will potty. At least she did twice a few days ago. I am hoping with our continued positive training that won't be an issue much longer.

Shanna is looking for her perfect home and if you have a soft heart, she would love to meet with you. She needs someone that will take their time and let Shanna open up daily to be given the chance at a Golden life. I know we are doing so well here, I want her to have a home of her own too. She will be ready by mid June if not earlier. She is already spayed and is now just spending time getting love and caring for her pups as much as she can.

So, what do you say--do you have enough love to give this very laid back young lady? She would benefit from a dog and a fence. She can NOT be let out on a tie out – I believe she would just dig a whole to hide in. If you are willing to always and I mean always walk her and help her grow, we could at least talk about meeting her. Shanna and I look forward to hearing from you! First, Shanna would like to thank her Bernese Mountain Dog friends that are sponsoring her. With medical bills over $1200, she really needed a friend like you! Thank you for caring about her so much!

Wow, have we had an exciting day around here with our Shanna. Shanna decided she wanted to go out on her own two feet and decided to come out of her crate several times to steal toys and to also take a couple of nibbles of food on her own. This was so exciting since we thought it would take a few days longer, but no, she bravely came out to see what we were all doing.

Now our only problem is she does not want to stay in her whelping box. She would rather keep seeing what the other dogs are doing and where there are more toys to steal. So we are going to have to try to close the door on the box so she does keep feeding her babies. That is not what we wanted at all.

Other than that... We never have had an accident in our house – she always waits to go outside. That is very nice of her and we praise her for this. She is starting to go for short walks around the cul de sac and likes them as long as no one else is around. If she sees anyone or anything moving she turns and tries to run to the house.

If you are interested in Shanna, you will need to have another dog and a fence. Shanna is so looking forward to the good life and will be ready to go to her forever home around June 15th. Do you have room for a scared puppy mill dog that just wants to be loved?

Oh yes--Shanna does not really bark. When she tries it sounds horrible. It is because we think she was de-barked at her puppy mill. This is a horrible thing to do to a dog and truly painful. I just cannot imagine all she has gone through and now look forward to getting her the best home around. Please say you will love her and give her a home? Please contact placementatragom [dot] org if you are interested. I would love to talk to you.
