4/2/07: Meg, a petite, shy female comes to us from a puppy mill in North Dakota. Our best guess is this little girl is between 12 to 18 months old and approximately 51 pounds. According to the volunteers that bathed the North Dakota dogs, Meg was the dirtiest and had the most matted coat of all the dogs bathed prior to her. After three baths and hours of brushing and trimming a beautiful dog has emerged.

Upon intake, Meg was very frightened and could usually be found cowering in the back of her crate. She has come a long way since coming into foster care. While she still favors her crate as a safe place, she quickly comes out to join the fun. She is a very sweet, gentle dog that soaks up all of the attention you are willing to give her. She has learned how to go up and down steps and that treats are a good thing after going potty outside. She is not house trained yet, but has only messed in the house once so far. Finally, she has a very good appetite and can clear a bowl of food in the matter of a few minutes.

Meg has been to the vet and received a pretty clean bill of health. She is currently in heat and can not undergo spay surgery until 4-6 weeks after her heat cycle is completed. Also, one of her hip joints suffers from dysphasia. The vet stated that this is common in Goldens and it may be possible that arthritis could set in when she gets older, however her hip is not giving her any problems now.

You can tell that Meg has not had a lot of room to roam because as she becomes more secure with her surroundings, she attempts to run with our resident Goldens on her leash but all she can do is hop across the lawn. A fenced yard would be beneficial, but possibly not necessary as I don’t feel Meg would be a runner. In fact, most times when outside she will come and lie at your feet or sit beside you and wait to be petted. Considering she’s a puppy mill dog, it’s surprising that she seems to be interested in toys and will carry them around and make them squeak.

It’s great to see the transformation from her cowering in the crate with fear, all matted and stinky, to a wagging tail when greeted, licks on the face or hand, curling up next to you while making sure either her paw or chin is resting on your hand, and to see her beautiful coat that doesn’t smell so terrible anymore. She’s simply precious and easy to get attached to.

Hi All,

I'm adopted!! Yay!!!  Jim & Mari are my new parents and I have a dog sister, Bear.  And I am so happy.  I'm living the Golden life now.  Treats and playtimes and a walk everyday cause I'm so special.  I'm being the puppy I never got to be.  After my last update, I had this false pregnancy thing and I was in heat.  The ultrasound told us that the heat was on, but there were no buns in my oven...ha.  So, after that silliness was over, I had to wait to be spayed.  And then last week, finally to my forever home.  And I've got more stuffed farm squeakies to keep flat piggy company.  I've always got some toy in my mouth.  I'm learning to walk with the Gentle Leader.

Yesterday I was outside fetching a stick with dad and I wanted to keep it but he kept throwing it, so I brought it to mom in the house.  And she kept it, too.  They said something about getting more exercise with me around now.  Thats a good thing, I think.  And I'm not using my safe crate anymore, cause I like the little couch better (see pictures).  I was at the doctor Friday and I'm really healthy except I have severe hip dysplasia and a little arthritis.  But it's not slowing me down any.  And I'm still afraid of people, but we're going to go to class to help me with that.
