Jake passed away Friday July 1st at 9:05 a.m. while in my arms and euthanized by my long-time vet. He went very peacefully, with grace, and was two weeks shy of turning 16. He was a wonderful spirit and had many deserved fans. I originally found him on Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM). They are an outstanding volunteer nonprofit as well as extremely passionate organization.

As Jake was suspected of having hip dysplasia, a golden/collie mix, and almost four, people were slow to adopt him. My prior background had been with female dogs, but as you view his photo above, there was something so exceptional about him. After his "rescue" (although not sure who was rescuing whom), his engaging personality fully emerged. Jake was also eventually diagnosed without hip dysplasia.

He was charismatic; he was selected amidst numerous dogs to be featured in note cards being offered by RAGOM in 2001. He traveled well; wherever the road might lead. He spent his first year at Cedar Point while I wrote and finished my Ph.D. He then spent weekdays in the Twin Cities at River Drive while I worked at starting a new center. Weekends were romps at the cabin.

Subsequently, Jake flew with me to Pittsburgh and Chatham University which allowed dogs on campus.

Every day he worked as a volunteer therapy dog bringing cheer to students, faculty, staff, and guests. Through a photo contest at the university, he was voted most favorite dog on campus. Subsequently Jake was featured in a fundraising calendar at Chatham as "Mister June."

He rode back with me through horrific weather upon returning to Minnesota three and a half years later. At Cedar Point he has basically been leash-free and enjoying his "golden" moments at the lake.

Jake's spirit has brought insurmountable joy to me and numerous others. He overcame a prior exceedingly abusive relationship to offer unconditional love. Jake will be dearly missed, but his memories and lessons and love remain.

You are receiving this because you know the special spirit of Jake and all dogs.
