Buddie 03-365

Profile

I would like for everyone to meet Buddie. He is a 16 month old purebred. He is reddish in color and weighs about 65-70 lbs. He was purchased at 9 months from a puppy mill in Arizona and when they purchased him he wasn’t in the best shape, he had 51 ticks on him. He was surrendered by a family in Iowa who took good care of him. They lived on a farm and allowed Buddie free range. He never left the property and knows his boundaries well. Buddie’s family consisted of three smaller children, ages 5,6,11. The family said that Buddie has even been around a relative’s baby without any issues. He seems to be great with children! Buddie also lived with a small dog, and the two got along fine. I guess Buddie had an earlier episode with cats, so he cannot go to a home with cats! He also cohabited with some free roaming chickens in the yard! The owner said that Buddie would wait with the 11 year old for the school bus, then come back up to the house after it left. He also said that Buddie is very protective of the children. The parents reported that Buddie would often lie out and “guard” the children while they were playing.

We think Buddie will make a great addition to someone’s family for the holiday. There are so many great things to say about him that I don’t know where to begin. When were first introduced to Buddie, he was shy and kept his distance. It was only a short time when he made his way over to us. From then on, he showered us with attention and kisses. This boy loves to kiss and make you happy!

It took the owner to pick Buddie up and place him in the car, but he rode like a champ the entire time! (2.5 hours). When we got home, our little pup, Daisy, snuck into the backyard and tried to give Buddie her welcome home routine. Buddie growled and lunged at her and then shook between my legs. The owners said that he is scared of loud noises and sudden movements, so that would be our Daisy! We got Buddie situated in our downstairs family room to calm down. The owners said that he does not like confinement and would not even go into a doghouse. We set up our large metal crate and after seeing me go in and lay down, Buddie followed me right in! He ended up sleeping in the crate the entire night without any fussing!

This morning we decided to give the dogs another try. After some growling and lunging at Baxter, our oldest, Buddie began sniffing and wagging his tail. It wasn’t long before they became good friends! We think that Buddie had never seen a large sized dog and just didn’t know what to make of it. Over a few hours, we introduced crazy Daisy and Rudy, our former RAGOM dog. They all took to one another and enjoyed several hours playing in the back yard. They have all been loose in the house all day, and we haven’t had one fight or display of aggression. Buddie has been panting a lot in the house, so I don’t know whether it is from all of the excitement or because he is too hot.

Buddie is a soft cuddly dog. He is housetrained and will let you know when he has to go out. Unfortunately, Julie and I didn’t take him that seriously this morning, and I ended up cleaning the accident! The owners warned us! Buddie had some obedience training. He knows his name and will sit down. He could definitely use some training classes to teach him more and also get him more comfortable around other dogs. Buddie seems to love toys and will fetch a ball. Buddie was kept outside most of the time and slept on an enclosed porch at night. The owners said that he has chewed on things, including power cords. We have been watching him closely, and have seen nothing of this yet. Granted, he has had his mind on other things lately, other than puppy mischievousness.

We think Buddie would do best with a family with children. I think he would also like at least one dog to play with and he loves exercise (we took him on a short walk today and he did great. . . . he also loves balls! NO CATS! Buddie has shown some extreme shyness at times and loud noises have scared him. I think that’s the puppy mill experience in him. The new family should be willing to give Buddie all of the love in the world to make up for his puppy mill upbringing.

Buddie needs to be neutered (hopefully early this week) and then he will be ready for adoption!

Dear RAGOM,

There is one more angel. You would know him if you saw him. He is the one with gentle brown eyes and playful expression, all wrapped up in a coat of gold.

Sweet Buddy (03-365) left us on Dec 19. The cancer showed up a couple weeks before that and while we had some time to prepare, it’s never enough time. With your help, we found each other nine years ago and he filled a place in our family that actually, at the time we didn’t realize, was meant for him all along.

His life was joy and light. His love was true. His devotion was endless. He listened without judgement and leaned in when he knew you needed him most. He gave love every day because he wanted to and the feel of his chin on your knee let you know that you were his reason for being.

We miss him today and we will miss him in the future I know. Even though our hearts are broken, our memories of him will be happy and strong. Our lives were blessed with this sweet, golden soul and we are the better for it.

Thank you RAGOM for being there and caring about the ones who need someone to care about them. We loved Buddy so much and we will be forever grateful for all you did for him.

Love,

Buddy's family

Hi everyone! I sure am having fun at my foster home! I had no idea I would like being an “indoors” dog so much! I am having a great time with my foster brother Baxter and sister Daisy. Daisy is definitely the boss of this gang, but she’s pretty fun to wrestle with. My foster brother Rudy (a former RAGOM dog) is not entirely pleased with me. . . we sometimes growl at each other, but we’re definitely warming up to each other. My foster parents say he has a harder time with me as he has had a rough life up until this past year when he was adopted. I can’t wait until I’m adopted into my forever home!

My foster parents keep telling me I need to eat more. I haven’t been really interested in food since I came here. There are just so many other things to do here besides eat! My foster mom tried to make me hamburger and rice to mix with my food, but I just pick out the hamburger (although I do try to eat a few pieces of dog food to make her happy). I also LOVE milk bones and am being fed a lot of those. I am already a bit on the skinnier side so they are trying to get me to eat. Sometimes if they feed me by hand I will eat more. They say I take things out of their hands very gently so I guess that is good.

I am getting neutered on the 12th so after that day I will be able to go to my forever home. Remember, I do NOT like cats so I can’t go to any families with cats as they say I can’t be trusted! While I am a very good boy, I am also only one year old so I do still have a lot of energy!

My foster mom has taken me on several walks and she says that I am a top notch walker. She just puts on my collar and a leather lead and off we go! Sometimes I walk to close to her that she actually trips over me. That scared me at first (I thought she was going to fall on me!!), but now we’re both used to it. She says I would be a great walking companion or running companion for someone. I could possibly pull if I saw another dog or squirrel so my new family will need to watch out for that. I bet with some kind training I will be an amazing walker.

I do know how to sit, but that is about it. I also respond very well to the word “no.” I have been crated during the day here although I bet I could be easily trained to be free in a house all day. My foster parents don’t quite trust me enough for this yet though. I have a huge kennel with my blanket in it and it is very cozy. They have left me out with the other pups for about 30 minutes with no supervision and I have done fine.

I am looking for a home that will be able to give me lots of attention and exercise. I had a rough first nine months of my life and I can sometimes get scared so sometimes I require a little more patience. It also takes me a little bit to warm up to new dogs (I love people!), but after I warm up to them we sure have a great time! I am a super sweet boy – I would be happy in any house that can give me the love and attention that I need (be warned. . . I do have a super thick shiny coat and I will probably shed lots!). I hope I can have my new “forever” home by Christmas!
