Baxter 04-303

Profile

Baxter is a 2 year old Flat Coated Retriever & Labrador Retriever mix.  He is a beautiful dog with shiny wavy black hair.  Baxter loves people but has been away from having his own family too long.  He's so excited when he knows its snuggle time that he sits on his haunches and reaches up to hug you.  Once he's settled in a bit we'll work on redirecting that posture.  Baxter definitely knows sit and is consistently responsive to it.  He was apparently also taught to shake, which when showing you, most often will result in holding hands - yes, holding hands....Baxter loves to have his paw held and stroked.

He's a very smart and very gentle boy.  He loves to play ball and will even pick up regulation size basketballs in his mouth - anything to encourage you or another dog to play with him.  On his first walk to the lake he fetched a stick and brought it right back various times with anticipation.  This "big footed happy dog" is  66 pounds at his adult weight, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and micro chipped.  He's a perfect candidate to be your permanent loving companion.

We adopted Baxter in the fall of 2004. At the time he was a skinny black lab in need of some loving. He was 2 years old we think (but can't be sure). He is now close to 7 years old. He loves going on walks with his mom and dad twice a day, and napping on his favorite couch. He absolutely LOVES going on car rides and sticking his head out the window to charm other drivers. He has conquered his fear of garbage trucks, but still doesn't like thunderstorms. He is spoiled with lots of cheerios and pork treats. He still loves to eat socks and tissues when we leave the house, or he thinks we aren't looking. He loves to hold hands  (not just shake) and get snuggle time. He has learned lots of new tricks like rolling over and crawling.

We are so happy with our Ragom dog (even if Baxter is a black lab) and we can't imagine our life without him!

When Baxter came 'home' from his neuter, the clinic sent him home with a discomfort relief medication, as well as an antibiotic to ease an irritation in his eyes.  With all that comfort, Baxter decided to take a long nap before shaking off the last remnants of the anesthetic!

Baxter will be attending the annual RAGOM picnic tomorrow (9/25) and I'm sure will be the best dressed male there in his automatic white shirt black suit coat :)  Although I'm sure Bax will have a great time flirting with everyone, he won't be able to go swimming for another 9 days to assure the integrity of his incision/stitches.  I hope he's not too disappointed!

RAGOM received a note about Baxter from a shelter in northern Minnesota.  In the photo they sent, Baxter resembled long term foster Mandy in a number of ways and he caught my heart!  On meeting him in person, we find that he resembles Cleo and Kelby much more so than Mandy, but we're very glad to have him, as he's got the best qualities of all three rolled into one, a big loving Golden Heart!

As his original location was so far away one of the RAGOM volunteers within the nearest 100 miles picked him up on a Friday while heading out for a weekend camping trip, which would end itself in the Twin Cities on the following Monday.  Baxter got to go camping for the weekend and from all reports, absolutely adored it!  He loves to swim and fetch, gets along with other dogs in a group situation, and isn't afraid of the 'big woods'!  Baxter is being neutered today, to return to us tomorrow.  We'll 'baby' him for several days, and then begin to help him find a well matched forever home.
