2/23/07: Ralph arrived at my home today after being in a shelter for over a month. He was a stray that nobody claimed. Ralph is a senior dog estimated to be around 10. He is slightly underweight and could stand to gain about 5 lbs. He had most vaccinations while at the shelter and was neutered. He did test positive for Lymes and had a 1 month treatment of antibiotics. He was negative for heartworm. I already have had him at the vet. He really has trouble getting around. He was put on anti-inflammatories but it is suggested he have x-rays. He also needs some teeth extracted and a growth on his bottom biopsied. He is a very sweet, laid back senior. He pretty much has ignored my dogs. I am guessing he is not housebroken as he has had a few accidents. He is also HOH (hard of hearing).

If weather permits I will be bring him to PetSmart in Eagan on 2/24/07.

I was really hoping this day wouldn't have come so soon but after only 18 months Ralph's life with us has come to an end. On Sunday evening just as we were going to go to bed, we went to help Ralph out to go do his business when the reality came that something was seriously wrong with him. We rushed him to the ER vet at around 9:45 pm. With in minutes they were asking what we wanted to do. As I looked into Ralph's eye I knew he was no longer my Ralph and that we had to let him go. With mom, dad, and big sis around we made the decision to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge to be with Reba - his foster sister - and to have a life without pain. We watched Ralph go from a scared, unsure puppy coming to a new home to a happy, relaxed puppy. I sit in my living room waiting for him to peak around the dining room chair after he was done with his dinner - eyes big, ears perked - looking for mom and dad. When you called his name he did his little prance to come in the living room to be with the family, to lay in front of the TV or come over to the couch to get scratches. We are going to miss him so much. The little things he did that would make you smile. The hurdles he over came by learning to trust and love again. He and Shadow - his fur butt brother - learned to be companions.

I would like to thank Ralph's FM for everything. For taking care of my Ralph, keeping him warm and safe until we were able to find him and bring him home. For seeing something in us that others passed on.

I have added some of my favorite pictures of Ralph and the way I will always remember him most.

Good bye baby boy, mama loves you so very much. FM was right, you were a PRINCE, at least . . . my prince.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye....Sir Ralph has left today for his new royal home.  He will share his life with his mom, dad, human sister and fur butt brother, Shadow.  Since Ralph is afraid of the camera, yes the camera, it has taken some doing to try and get pics when he wasn't looking.  Not too bad, huh?

I cried all morning before the" K" family came to get Ralph.  But we spent Saturday togeather and a few hours today, and I knew in my heart he would loved, cherished, pampered, spoiled.......well, you get the picture.  Shadow has been an only child and so he too will have some adjusting to do with the new big brother in the house.  I know the family will do everything to make and keep Ralph comfortable, including building a ramp down the deck steps just for him should he need it.   He will live out the remainder of his royal life being treated like the King he is.

Ralphie, you gave us so much and we will miss you, your quiet ways, soft mouth, goofy sounding bark and the wag of the tail that took a while to show up.  You are a big and beautiful dog inside and out.

Thank you to the "K" family for wanting a senior with a few physical limitations.  He was what you were looking for, and what Ralphie needed.

To Ralph's sponsors, thank you again for helping out Ralph and RAGOM.  Know he will spend his remaining years being taken care of and loved.

Love, Foster mom and crew

Hi Everyone, Sir Ralph here....Foster Mom (FM) is off to bed so I figured it was a good time to tell you how well I'm doing, how much fun I'm having and how you're missing out on a GReat senior partner!  I'm sending you pictures and you'll notice, no face shots....except when I'm sleeping.  I just don't like the camera thing.

Let's see, it's official, I am housebroken, no accidents, no more wearing my "manly garment", free roam of the house, life is good.  Foster Mom and Dad are so proud of me and tell me what a good boy I am.  I let FM clip my nails today.  It was ok but not my favorite thing to have done.  I'm eating well, taking my pills with a wee bit of moist dog food, and I know where the treats are kept :)

I don't know where my FM got the idea I didn't like other dogs, puppies etc.  As you can see by the pictures I allowed Lake, the new neighbor kid, to check me out and climb on me.  Guess he doesn't realize grandpa aged dogs don't have to put up with this nonsense, but we do it.  When he got out of line...just a bit, I had to bark at him to get his attention.  But now everytime we are outside and he is out he gets so excited to see me and Reba, we have to go over say hi and do the neighborly thing and play with the kid.  Actually, he's kinda cute.

Today FM went to pick up a new RAGOM addition.  He's not staying with us, but she had time to stop at home before she met the next transport lady.  The pup, well he's only 6 months old, Morgan 07-227, was outside and Reba and I had to go check him out.  He was a good kid, we did our sniff and greet and it was just fine.  He wasn't all over me so I was ok with that.  Reba got to ride with FM and Morgan to MacDonald's and I had to stay home.  I don't know what she thought I'd do in the van with Morgan, but it was ok cuz I got to spend one-on-one time with FD (Foster Dad).

The cats seem to have figured out I couldn't care less about them so even that scaredy cat, Sedwick, will come out.  Coulter hasn't figured out I don't like him rubbing all over me and today I had to give a bark to just remind him.  Sedwick is getting pretty brave though.  Every night we walk up the steps to go to bed and the dumb cat lays on the steps and won't move.  So I have taken it upon myself to walk by him, then turn around and give him what for.  Off he goes and I just stand and watch to make sure he doesn't come back up til I'm ready for bed.

I have my schedule down pretty good........actually I've got FM/D fairly well trained.  Keep in mind I may be a little hard of hearing, but I hear  enough so when they say "no" or "come" I do it.  Anyway, I get up in the morning, outside to do my business.  Back in for breakfast.  FM gets ready for work, then we go outside and go for a walk around the yard - it's pretty big.  If there is time we hit the field for a couple minutes there, too.  Then back in the house to snooze and keep the cats in line.  When FM gets home we go out to potty, take in a little air and then it's usually time to eat.  After our supper or the parent's supper, we go out for our evening walk which is usually out in the field.  I love that part, I get to mosey along and stop and smell whenever and whatever I want.  No hurry, just some nice leisurely walking.  Then I get a little energy and lope along for a short time.  FM says I look so regal when I run.  If Lake is outside we wander over to see him and his humans. A little TV time, a short walk around the house and then treat time.  I like the weekends best cuz both FM and FD are home and there's a lot more action going on and we're in and out all day.  Today was so nice out, the field was pretty dry and the sun was warm on the deck.  Life is good.

I still like playing ball in the house. I bring it over to mom or dad and they roll it on the floor, I fetch, bring it back and "throw" it at them.  One nice thing is that they finally figured out Reba and I like more rugs on the hard floors, so I have some good traction now.  FM said something about nothing matches rug-wise - like this is a big deal or something.

So if you are looking for a senior who's in good health overall, likes to go for walks and just moseying around, loves to keep you company on a car or van ride, is content to hang out with you, is easy going and doesn't bug you all the time for attention, well here I am.  The weather is finally getting nice and I'd really like to find my forever home and family now.  I guess at one point in my life someone must have loved me enough to train me and have me in the house, and after wandering around by myself and having to be boarded for a month.........well it sure is great to be part of a family again, regular meals, treats, walks, socializing, playing ball, it's great.  But I would like to find someone who wants to share my Golden years with me.......could it be you?

Hugs to all, Sir Ralph and Crew

I know it's been a while since I updated Ralph, but I wanted to spend some time getting to know him and see how things progressed.  One word sums it up...AWESOME!!

I also found out Ralph was a stray from Wisconsin.  He finally found his way via RAGOM to a wonderful volunteer couple who have a boarding facility in WI.  During this time Ralph had a disc fused because of a previous injury, thus he has limited mobility in his back legs. It is not dysplasia.  Yet he does wonderfully.  He so enjoys his walks each day, even though they are short ones of 10 or 15 minutes.  When we return he takes a nice long nap.

Sir Ralph has become a bit of a mamma's boy when I am home.  When I am not, then TM/foster dad is just fine.  Ralph now has free roam of the house while we are gone.  We continue to have him wear his "manly garment" while we are gone for work, but when we are home he is fine and lets us know when he has to go out.  He did have one accident but that was because I was not fast enough to read the signs.  He has been sleeping in the bedroom on his own doggie bed, and graduated to not having to wear his garment at night either.  Best we can figure is that when we get home or first thing in the morning, you need to get him out right away.  Also, after a walk or time outside, he will come in and down a half bowl of water.  Within about 10 minutes I take him out again.  He is funny in the sense you must be outside with him, at least standing in the doorway, or he won't go do his business.  I have also learned that it takes him some walk about time before he is ready to get down to the serious business.  But he never has had a #2 accident in the house.  He is great.

Madame Reba has not been able to win favor with Sir Ralph.  However, when we go out in the field for walks now, they wander together on and off.  It's such a joy to see him out and even doing a little running.  He may be hard of hearing in some tones, but when he starts to wander when we are walking around our property, you simply say Ralph NO.........come.  Most cases he comes.  Even if he decides to have selective hearing, I can out run him!!!!  That is a big plus.  With everyone gone for Easter and Spring breaks, it's been pretty quiet around here, so the walks in the field have been great.

I have taken Ralph on 2 home visits.  He was great........pretty much napped.  But it has been good socializing for him.  The first home had a female and she did a little growl and he answered and that was that.  The second home visit I didn't read my sheet very well; got there only to find out they had a dog, and a male one at that.  For some reason I thought Ralph had issues with males.  So they put their GR downstairs while we did the visit. Afterwards they brought him up and after some barking on his part (the resident dog)....he was so excited to have another dog there he just wanted to play; they were fine.  In the end Ralph sniffed and was sniffed and as usual chose not to interact with the dog.

My conclusion in regard to Ralph is that he would be very happy being an only fur butt child.  He could also be in a forever home with another older dog who would be happy to ignore him :-)  Ralph is a wonderful companion.  He loves to go for walks, is now coming to me and nosing my hand for pets, and he will bark to go outside to potty (sometimes, rest of the time we just make sure to get him out every few hours).  He is not a "kisser", which I miss.  He loves to be around his people, and will go to either of us for hugs and scritches.  Ralph couldn't care less about the cats....though Coulter did decide he should rub up under Ralph's chin when Ralph was laying down and he gave Coulter a sound bark and that was it.  Speaking of barks, he has one of the deepest, graveliest barks I have ever heard.  He will use it when he sees the neighbor dog heading out to the field, in the field or coming back.  Not sure what the deal is except I think he feels it's his duty to let him know this is his territory.

Ralph is big boy, and you can tell by the pictures of him with Reba he is as blond as she is red.  She can out run him as she is still in pretty good shape at 14.  But they both enjoy the outdoor time, cuddle up time, and time on their own. He is a wonderful dog, and we are happy to have him in our home, even when we need to put the "manly garment" on while we are gone.  Which by the way, has been dry 99% of the time with us being gone for up to 8 hours.  I think he knows not to drink a lot and he naps while we're gone. Once home he potties, comes in and drinks a full bowl, and then goes back out.

He has also learned which bowl is his, so no more dragging him from Reba's food bowl to his own.  I do not make either dog sit and wait for food or treats.  I make them wait, but not sit.  Too hard on them getting up and down.  Ralph gets enough exercise just going up and down the stairs following me. He also takes treats very gently.  He doesn't like his glucosimine without peanut butter, but that's ok.  He only gets a dab.  Today for Easter dinner they got a little turkey and green beans.  Reba wolfed hers down and waited patiently for Ralph to just pick out the turkey and walk away.  Reba then helped herself to the green beans.

Well, I think overall Ralph has adjusted just fine to "house life" and having humans and other 4 legged creatures around. He's sweet and so easy to have around.  If you are looking for a companion to walk a bit with you, keep you company and hang out, this gentleman is the man for you.  Don't let the limited use of his manly garment detour you from bringing this wonderful guy into your home and heart; and by the way, we went to PetCo and he did awesome, a perfect gentleman, didn't bark at any of the dogs, was nice with the people.  Just a wonderful boy.

Ralph has surprised us with his ball playing.  He found a tennis ball and throws it at us.  We roll it along the floor and off he goes.  Funny thing is, he won't play with the ball outside!!

This afternoon we decided it was DQ time.  TM started up the car not realizing I was taking the kidz.  So he put a rug down in the back seat, Ralph got right in and proceeded to stretch out full length on the back seat.  Reba wouldn't even try to get in!  So turn off the car, start up the doggie mobile.  Reba jumped right in and.........yep sprawled full length on the seat.  Ralph got in and just sat on the floor next to her til she sat up just enough for him to weasel his way up on the seat and...lay down as much as he could, which included laying on Reba's front paws/legs.  So off we went.  He wouldn't budge and neither would she.  Wish I would have had the camera along, as it's the closest the 2 have been and it was a great pic.  Next time for sure.  Ralph and Reba will both get in the van in a heartbeat.

So if you are looking for a senior gentleman to spend some strolling and driving time with, Sir Ralph would be a great companion.  He's a gem of a senior and will give someone hours of contentment just enjoying one another's company.  Please contact us at Placementatragom [dot] org.

We'll be waiting..........for Spring.....and to hear from you.

Hear ye, Hear ye! Sir Ralph has arrived at his new residence!!  We have learned in a very short time Sir Ralph does NOT like his picture taken..he says he doesn't understand why his personal portrait painter isn't allowed to continue to capture him on canvas.  SR was a stray, so whence he came from, we don't know.  He did have Lymes and is back on antibiotics for a possible relapse.  He takes Rimadyl for his hip, which is bad enough so it gives him a little bit different gate and his foot isn't as strong as the other one.  But he stands proud and almost prances.  He takes glucosamine and vitamin C to help with his joints, and Banana essence for calming.  Apprently while he was boarded he would try to tell all the other dogs what to do, when to do it and how to do it....and not in a very gentlemanly way.  Here with Madam Reba - well, if he has a title she needs one :) - there is no barking. We will see how things progress.  Reba has tried to engage him in play, but he wants nothing to do with her.  I am sure after being a stray and then boarded, he will need his adjustment time.

SR is a stately gentleman of about 10 years, a beautiful blonde with shades of peach.  In the one picture you will note he is wearing something blue around his back side.  This is the newest fashion and is called "Male (diaper) Wrap".  Shhh, don't tell him about the "d" word, he thinks all the gentlemen wear these when in the house.  Be that as it may, SR has a bit of incontenance, though we have only had 2 accidents and they weren't his fault per se.  He tried to tell me he had to go out, but his pacing didn't seem like a clue to me as he does sometimes pace a lot.  Anyway, this "male garment" holds a "pad" in it, so if for some reason he feels the urge to go and we don't catch it, he has a little help.  His pad has only been wet once.  This gentleman prefers to stand tall and do his business, and sometimes he isn't quite sure he's done and will walk on a bit.  He has not wet his kennel, either last night or today while we were gone for about 3 hours.  He kennels up nicely, but if you are leaving.....leave, if you are going to bed.....go....as given too much time to figure this out, he will bark.  I do hope that down the line he may join us in the bedroom with the help of his "male garment".

Ralph is sweet boy, open to pets and pats, but not demanding.  When he first saw our youngest cat, Coulter, he gave his version of chase.  The next time he just looked at him and ignores him.  I finally got the older cat, Sedwick, and brought him to meet SR.  Again nothing.  So we are good in the cat department.

We have 7 steps going down to our family room and 7 going upstairs to the bedrooms.  He has done them all, slowly and not without a little discomfort maybe.  Upstairs does not intice him, but the family room where we all go to educate our selves with the "idiot box"  (as my Dad called it) calls to him and he joins us there.  Usually he is content to just hang out in the kitchen and follow me to the laundry room.  He is trying to figure things out, like why water comes out of the big white machine, or why does the water go round and round in the other white machine, and what is that thing people "sit" on and then it makes a funny noise.  He may be hard of hearing, but there are certain tones he can still hear.  TM (The Man, better known as my hubby) says we are truly a house of seniors, and with both dogs hard of hearing and not real agile anymore, it's pretty calm.  Even doing the male garment duty hasn't deterred TM from him.  I have heard him talking to SR and seen him giving pats :)

I'm sorry the picture aren't better, but once SR sees the flash, he's off.  Hopefully in time he will either adjust or I will be spending a lot of time trying to get candid shots.  Meanwhile, we welcome this gentlemen in to our home and will tell you that after only one day and night he is an easy guy to have around.  He doesn't fuss about his garmet being put on or taken off, he trots out to potty and comes right back.  I look forward to the rain stopping so we can take him and Reba for a short walk.  Meanwhile, if you have a place in your heart and home for this gentleman and are an approved app, please email placementatragom [dot] org.

Sir Ralph wishes you a good night and asks that he be accompanied to his bed chambers for the night.  So good night, one and all.
