6/18/06: Well, today we are expecting and looking forward to the fostering of Alex. We will be meeting his transporter in a couple hours. It quit raining yesterday finally and today is a beautiful sunny day?..what a good day to get a new foster dog! I am sure all will go just fine???..Alex came from a home in MN and was a 1 dog household. The family had Alex since a little pup and is surrendering him due to a move out of state and into an apartment.

We have returned with 10 year old Alex! What a love. He takes treats from you, but you need to remind him to be slow, as he is anxious. We are wondering what is going through his mind - he's never been with another family his whole life. I would say he is about 70-75#, white on face, darker red coat. He really needs a bath and some knots cut out! Teeth need a cleaning as well. This dog has a wonderful warm temperament and I am sure he's confused. It is truly wonderful and incredible how they adapt and accept and trust. He has moved in and has fun with our 3 troops, ignores the cats and is perfectly happy. He's wandering around checking things out, but stays close to me. He loves the backyard - did his chores and I am sure he feels much better!

He looks very good otherwise. After a nice bath and brushing he is in top condition, I believe. Very, very sweet, calm and good natured. He is going on a visit with us this afternoon to our daughter?s home for Father?s Day. They only live about ? mile from here, have 2 small children and a large fenced in yard. So we will bring Alex and our Golden, Cheyenne, who is the same age as Alex.

We are very lucky and glad to be able to foster this wonderful boy. I did manage to get a few pictures of him as well?what a great boy and a super nice day for a new baby!

Our boy is doing just wonderful. More and more attached to foster mom though. Now in the mornings early, before all the troops get up for the day, Alex comes to my side of the bed, gives me “that look” as if: “now, NOW can I come up and lay by you?” Up he comes, snuggle snuggle/pet pet, belly rubs from there on! He lays on the floor by me or wherever he wants to during the night. Likes the fan blowing too. Such a warm loving boy. Very gentle when he comes up (that is because the darn Border Collie is on the bed!) and just wants to be by me. Everyone has their feeding station in the morning and he is always ready for breakfast! He is so much better at taking snacks now too….just have to say ‘be nice’ and we're good to go. He has such personality in his eyes…..so deep and thoughtful and loving. Watching…..waiting to be by you always. Does fine around us when we eat dinner too. But you can tell, just hoping ‘something’ falls his way (as do the other 3!!!).

Still goes for walks perfectly, really enjoys being groomed. Loves rides in the truck and to check out stuff. Hangs out with the other Golden and wants to be by her….just because. You just can’t ask for a better dog. We have not gone to the groomer again to see how that goes. He sure didn’t like it the first time! What he did not like was being left alone. Very understandable as confused as he was when we first got him. He is a true blessing to foster! He will need someone by him most of the time….or I feel he will be depressed. Physicially, perfect. No problems at all. We really love him and enjoy him. One of the kitties….maybe not as much!

Alex continues to do great. He had a trip to the groomer and looks wonderful as you can see! He did not like being left alone at the groomer’s however….separation he did not like…poor guy. Did not understand. I came back with him and we finished the job and then he was fine. All clean now! There were no hot spots, allergies or anything to notice by the groomer at all. Just beautiful dark red fur. Alex is doing wonderful, will stay in the front yard by us and is such a good boy. Alex still enjoys all his walks everyday. He continues to do well with the other crew too. We truly enjoy having him!

Alex has his first vet visit yesterday and was great. Very well behaved and outcome is terrific! He weighs about 71#, no heart murmurs or anything; ears fine (had infections in past probably due to swimming in nearby lakes); no allergies; teeth ok; got everything up to date. He did not mind at all getting his long nails trimmed or getting blood taken for heartworm test. Just all around in great shape. Does not act or look 10 years old. He is “very young” for a 10 year old said the doc! Good manners, not scared, fine around other animals in clinic. This boy walks just superbly! A true joy to take for walks and runs. You can easily jog with him too. I have never seen any aggression with Alex at all. He and male Corgi would not want to share a treat however! He does perfect with all 3 cats and fits well into the dog pack……especially considering he had been an only dog for 10 years in the home! Small kids, big kids, it does not matter….he is wonderful. So now physically and behaviorally he is great. This guy will work in many different homes. He is very adaptable. However, I do think he is somewhat lonesome and not sure if he is going anywhere else and he is also very attached to this family now. Alex listens very well and knows almost all commands quite well. We are very glad to be part of his wonderful life!
