Georgie 06-073

Profile

2/26/06: Georgie, or Tinker to us, has made it to Apple Valley from a far away place called North Dakota. I don?t have all the specifics on this little girl but it is my understanding Dad was a PB Golden and mom a mix of Golden and Lab.

Tinker is pretty scared right now but doing well. When she plays she jumps, never walks, just hops about. When we go out and she comes in she gets as low as possible to sneak in.

Last night she slept from 10 until 5 this morning, went out and then just hung out on the bed with us until she fell back to sleep. Of course the Newfs wanted to get up at 6 to eat so everyone ate a great breakfast.

Tinker will head to the vet on Monday or Tuesday to start her shots and check for worms. Updates

Georgie here – Foster Mom said she could not write another update so soon, but she is bursting at the seams with excitement so I said I would tell the world what I did today. Yep it is true, I slept in the crate with Mistee today as you can see by the pictures. But the bigger deal is, at 11:00 foster mom and dad left for an hour so I went in my crate (oh my, is that small) and Mistee in hers - for a whole hour this morning! Foster mom and dad came home and they were all smiles because I was sound asleep and no mess for them. Little did I know that after dinner and this really fun play session at 5:00 this evening, they'd put us in our crates again! Yes I cried, but by they time they came home at 6:15 I was sleeping again! No mess in my crate and I had even eaten dinner before they left. I know, I am a good girl who is learning (quickly, might I add) that the crate will not hurt me!

That is it for me and my update – I bet you want to adopt me now, don’t you! If you are interested in meeting me and have been approved, please send an email to Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved – send in an application so we can get me into your home.

Forever the Tinker Bell named Georgie!

Saturday, March 4, 2006

I know this is a little quick to do our update but I just had to share a few things about Georgie – Tinker Bell. Today she had two huge firsts thanks to another RAGOM volunteer. Tinker Bell actually went on a home visit and I think she did really well. She even fell fast asleep on the very nice lady's lap – I mean out for the count asleep!

Tinker went to the door a couple of times so I let her out each time. Yep she went potty both times. What a gal! She really did well and impressed me, I honestly thought this home visit would be terrible and I thought it went well for Tinker. I am so happy for her!

Well, during our ride to and from the home visit, the other Volunteer and I talked about Crate Training Tinker and she even said – go smaller. So we did. Today at 4:00 we left the house for 27 minutes and no messes in the crate and she was fast asleep. Now remember we ran her before going in and she was tired because of all the activities going on today but she did GREAT. Okay I am just such a proud foster mom of our girl right now I had to share.

Thanks for letting Tinker and me visit today at your home visit L&T it was a lot of fun and you really did make me feel that Ms. Tinker Bell is coming along nicely.

We continue to move things along and Tinker AKA Georgie – thinks I am a drill sergeant. She is learning the ins and outs of crates. Not thrilled with them but I think in time she will get used to them. Tinker will always need a larger crate that is wire, not the plastic enclosed kind. I also think if her forever home works outside the house, she will need to either hang out with her new parents at night in their bed or have a nice play pen area right next to it. Crating her all day and then again all night could send her into a tail spin. I think within a few months, when potty trained, she would be able to be baby gated in the bedroom and sleep on the floor nicely. Tinker is an awesome sleeper – usually from 9:30 to 5 without ever moving and then out to potty and she then chews on a bone and naps until 6.

We are still working on potty training and it usually goes well, unless I get busy and don’t notice the signs or she wakes up when I am not around to see her. 5 minute rule is still going strong. What, you don’t know the 5 minute rule? Within 5 minutes of sleep or after play time – out we go to potty. We are using treats for her and that seems to go well.

We took our first walk this morning – did not go so well, but we will try again tonight and keep going every morning and evening. She is not thrilled with the Gentle Leader but I think it is important she realizes who is in charge, because at this point, she thinks she is! I finally figured her out, I thought she was shy and timid; nope, that is what she wants you to think. Just watch her beat up the Newfs and you will know where I am coming from.

I think with Tinker a short and brisk morning walk is going to be a MUST. Oh my, when she gets up, watch out world, she is after everything and every body. So we started her day today by walking. We only managed to get down the street and back, but it seemed to be enough so we could all get ready for work and school.

Till later this weekend....

Well Georgie – Tinker Bell – went to talk with the vet today and has had her first set of shots. She was not thrilled that someone would poke this big huge needle in her but I told her it had to be done to keep her safe and healthy. She understood once her doctor gave her a HUGE cookie. Oh yea, Tinker Bell is NOT so small after all - yes, she weighed in at 13 pounds! Now keep in mind she had just eaten a HUGE cup of food and I have no idea about how many cookies. So I think we are honestly looking at closer to 11 pounds. She will weigh in at no more than 55 to 60 pounds when all said and done. At least that is what the vet was thinking.

She was also micro chipped and got checked for worms and all looks great; we are doing a dose of preventative though. Why not be safe rather than sorry. We started to treat train her for going potty and WOW – a miracle happened – loves treats and so cries at the door to go potty so she can get that cookie. What a softy I have turned out to be.

We started to feed her in the BIG Newf Crate (wire and very open and big) to see if we can entice her to feel crates are her friend. It is tough going, but she will go in and eat. We start the feeding at the door and keep pushing the bowl further and further until all fours are in the crate and praise the heck out of her when she realizes that she is fully in the crate and bolts.

That’s it for now and let’s see where this brings us next week. Georgie & Jadee sleepingGeorgie, Coal & MisteeGeorgie & Coal sleeping

Monday, February 27, 2006

Things are going pretty good for our little Georgie (Tinker Bell). She has had a couple of accidents in the house, but things are going relatively well for the second full day at our house.

Tinker is now running in and out of the house, no more sneaking in, she just leaps in. The Newfs have taken to her and let her play a little rough if she wants. Mistee of course is always there asking Tinker if she wants to play.

Our only concern with Tinker at this point is she is terrified of going into confined spaces. She cries for hours on end if you put her in a crate, so for the time being we are going to work on making it a safe and happy place for her since we know in real life, she will more than likely need to be crate trained. Tinker will not be sleeping in a crate at night....nope, you can find her sleeping with the Newfs on the floor or on our bed with us. Once we get the scary crate thing worked out, we can start working on sleeping in there at night. Honestly, we are starting small – we are putting her into the crate for 5 to 10 minutes at a time and that is it. She is just terrified of them. I hope going for short periods will help her through this. We are going in the crate at least 8 times a day, I try to make it every hour or so when we are home.

Tomorrow Tinker will go into the vet to get checked out. Once we have all her vitals, I will send an update tomorrow night so you know, too!
