Maxwell/Dodge 06-508

Profile

11/11/06: Maxwell has arrived!! His birthday is 12-1-1999 so that makes him almost 7! Max is pretty overweight so we will be feeding him a reduced calorie food and make sure that he gets lots of exercise while he is here. His adoptive family will have to be sure that they stick to a good exercise regimen as well. He met the resident dog Cinder with no problems although I think he is a little overwhelmed that she is so excited to have a new foster in the house and demands that he play constantly. Max crates well and rides in the car well without a crate.

He initially was a big fan of pulling on the leash and as much as I would have loved to do strength training with my arms tonight, I put a Gentle Leader on him right away, which he immediately responded to. I don't know if he has ever had one on, but he certainly did a 180 degree change!

More to come as we get to know this big guy!

Max will be attending the Petco event tomorrow in Woodbury from 11am-3pm. He even got a bath and a good brushing tonight, although there are still some mats I need to work with a little more. If you want to meet him, look for the large red dog that looks like a small VW Bug - I promise he won't look like that for long, and I know that there is someone out there who wants a future fun walking partner!

Dodge had a fun time meeting everyone today at PetCo! And of course, he loves to show off wearing a fancy collar.

And the update I know everyone's been waiting for!

Dodge is completely healthy and ready to go home! He weighed in at 85.7 pounds, which is already almost 20 pounds LESS than he was in June of this year! The vet said that he needs to lose about another 15 pounds, and could even lose a little more than that. So we are well on our way. He was cleared to go on walks and other activities, his joints and everything are fine. He did wonderfully at the vet appointment and was wagging his tail the whole time, although he was a big baby when they looked in his ears. And even his ears were perfect! After he loses his weight, Dodge will be even more gorgeous - he has that red coat and the brightest eyes!

Dodger does not need to go to a home with another dog. He would love to soak up all the attention just by himself! Cinder tries to get him to play and he'd rather just sit on my foot outside and watch the leaves play. She thinks he is a party pooper. For all of her pestering, he hasn't gotten upset with her at all. I don't think anything bothers him. He's not getting any treats or bones here because of his weight, but we pet him from head to tail and are near him when he eats and he just wags his tail the whole time - I don't see any possessiveness from him.

I really can't say enough good things about Dodger. He has a wonderful attitude about everything. He is totally housetrained and will go to the door if he has to go potty - you'll know because it will be the only time of the day when he is not right next to you. He is crate trained. He should have a crate in his new home as he goes into it here for some rest or if he's pouting that we're not letting him have any of our dinner (or breakfast, or lunch...). Dodge would be fine with kids. He's met some who wanted to hug him, and like the teddy bear he is, he thumped his tail the whole time and looked at me like, "Isn't this wonderful? I LOVE this!" He was afraid of some swanky Yorkshire Terriers at the vet who were dressed to the nines - I think their bling on their collars intimidated him. :) Dodge is just a big lover. He's not a big kisser and prefers to just snuggle right up next to you. He walks perfectly on the Gentle Leader. He knows "Sit" "Down" "Nice" and "Wait." Shall I rave some more? You should see him for yourself! Dodge is a great representative of the "classic" Golden personality, multiplied by 10.

Email placementatragom [dot] org and tell them you want to meet Dodge! He will steal your heart and never let it go.

Max, or Dodge as we call him (since he's probably got a Hemi in there somewhere AND he responds to it better than Max), attended today's PetCo event and absolutely LOVED meeting everyone there! Even though he is brand new to RAGOM, he made sure that everyone knew who he was and petted him. His personality was just shining through and for everyone who met him today, this is how he is ALL the time. Very sweet and gentle and falling all over himself to get you to pet him.

Here's a little of Dodge's history and facts:

He was an inside dog and became a full time outdoor dog about a year ago. Then he was turned into a shelter. Going from his vet records, he was 69 pounds on 6/23/05. When he went in again 6/19/06, he had ballooned to 103 pounds! He was pretty much free-fed a discount store brand name dog food, which really caused him to pack on the pounds :( We are feeding him at scheduled times and he is eating a high quality reduced calorie food. Dodge thinks that this is not any fun at all, but since he loooooooves food he's still very enthusiastic. He has a little white right on his chest and looks a little patched together as he had some mats and needed them to be shaved off at the shelter.

Dodge is a friendly, sweet boy. He has that classic Velcro Golden personality and will sit right in front of you for attention and lovin'. He is good with kids and other dogs, male and female. He won't knock down a small child, he just sits for attention and bumps your hand to remind you he is there. He won't need to go to a home with a second dog, but would be fine if you already have a resident dog. He is on a tie out here and is housebroken. He is also crate trained and will go in there for a snooze. All you have to do is point to the door and he walks right in. If you are holding food in your hand, Dodge will grab at it because he is SO excited about food. We are working on "Nice" when we give him food from our hands. He walks well on the Gentle Leader.

Dodge is neutered, heartworm negative, and has had most of his shots updated. He will be going to the vet this week to get chipped and any other vetting completed. Barring some medical condition, Dodge will be ready to go to his new family! Dodge would love to meet your whole family at Thanksgiving!
