Nala 05-221

Profile

11/27/05: Nala has arrived safely, thanks to her ad hoc foster mom who picked her up from the boarding facility and met me in Albertville. Nala was sad to say goodbye to her ad hoc foster mom and layed quietly in the back of the car the entire way home. Once we arrived home, Nala and my resident met without too much incident, much to my relief. Nala is a very sweet girl with some energy and extra exuberance which is healthy and to be expected from a one year old dog. As I write, my resident, Sue, and Nala are fast asleep next to my chair. As I get to know this wonderful sweet girl, I will send in updates. One thing that is for sure, this sweet girl deserves some stability, love, and security. More to come as the days go by...

Nala continues to do well in our home. Last week, I took her on her very first home visit and she was so well-behaved that the people didn't believe she was the same dog from the website. She got along great with their resident dog and just a joy to have with. Of course, getting her there was a challenge (the whole getting in the car thing) and when we were ready to leave, the nice people even had a little treat from Nala- (I got one too and it was very yummy- Good job Mrs. P!) Nala was so good at the home visit, the family was very confident that when we left, Nala would hop right in my car and we would be on our way (I loved the optimism!) After a lovely visit with the family, Nala and I said our good-byes and we went to the car and I opened up the tailgate and Nala just stood there and refused to move. I had hot dogs and turkey that I tried to lure her in with, but this girl had made up her mind and she wasn't going to budge. I had developed a little plan to get her in that was hit or miss when it worked, and it goes something like this: I go in through the back side door, while Nala is still standing at the back tailgate and I throw hot dog chunks to her, as she gets closer to the car, I throw them closer to me so she actually has to reach into the car and get them, each time forcing her to come closer and closer and finally when she can't reach the hot dog, she jumps in to get it, I grab her leash, secure it to the head rest of the back seat so she can't jump out, quickly close the side door, then run around and close the tailgate...this all sounds wonderful, except it didn't work out that way this time. No matter how much she wanted those chunks of hot dogs, she wasn't jumping into the back for it, so I realized brute strength was going to have to be used this time. So I got out of the back seat (for those of you reading, you are seeing my error here and anticipating my mistake....) and walked around to the back where Nala was and I gathered up every bit of strength I could muster up, and picked her up, again as she turned into a 1000 lbs. (does that make me the worlds strongest woman?) I picked her up and placed her in the back and closed the tailgate....but wait! You all noticed before that when I said I got out of the back seat that I didn't say I closed the back door...and I didn't! So you all know what happens next...Nala jumped right over the back seat and right out of the side door! I can't believe I forgot to close the side door! I was laughing and exhausted from my bout with her! All the while, I believe we were giving the P family quite a show, Mr. P came out and said "We thought you had her..." and I would have had her, if it hadn't been for my bungling mistake of leaving the door open! Mr. P was nice enough to pick her up and place her in the car and of course, he made it look easy.

So on that note, Nala would like to say something before we bid everyone farewell and happy holidays:

Okay, Nala is young and her paws are big, so she can't really type very well, but if she could, I am sure she would say something like "For Christmas, I would like a rawhide, although I know I can be naughty with rawhides, I promise to be good! And a new forever family, someone that likes to run and play with me and love me and doesn't mind getting the "big paw" in their face at 3:00 in the morning....(you all know the big paw...that paw, that says "hey, you're not sleeping are you?"....)

Happy Holidays from Nala, Sue, and me!

Nala is adjusting nicely to our home but we have encountered a new issue. Because of Nala being bounced around from shelter to foster to boarding facility, she now has a fear of riding in the car. She does not want to get into the car as she fears that she will be brought somewhere and left. I have been working with her and trying to make it a positive experience- taking her wherever I go, taking her for a ride and then going somewhere we can go and run, or going to visit people where she gets attention. She also gets treats when she is in the car. So far, she still turns into a dog that weighs 900 lbs. when it comes to getting her in the car and I find myself just laughing and wondering what my neighbors think as they see me trying everything in the world to get Nala in the car. I talk to her, I try reasoning with her, there are always treats involved, including turkey, hot dogs, etc. We walk around for a bit, I try to get her comfortable and relaxed, but still she does not want to get into the car. Then I gather up all of the strength I have in me (which isn't much) and I have to lift her in the car as she is fighting me the whole time. Nala is so sweet and lovable and I really cannot blame her for her fear of the car and I am trying so hard to reassure her that the car ride can lead to good things.

She also continues to be very energetic, so our routine includes running each night (average of 3 miles) and lots of playtime in the backyard with Sue giving chase and Nala running away from her. She really needs a good home where someone can devote their time to keeping her active and entertained and as I said before, another fur brother or sister would be just lovely. When she has been adequately exercised, she is a perfect angel.

Yes, it's me, the lonely girl in St. Cloud.....but not anymore. I got my Get Out Of Jail card today...please note, the accommodations were nice.......and the pics, can you tell how excited I was to be leaving? We made a stop at ad hoc foster mom's house....played with Brandy 05-330 and yet to have seen a cat, I think someone made that up about having cats. Anyway, we are leaving to go meet my new, very own Foster MOM!!!! Yaaayyyyy!! Tonight I will be in a nice snuggly home with my own foster family. That means you'll be hearing from my foster family telling you what a wonderful girl I am and how you'd be so lucky to have me for your very own FOREVER GOLDEN GIRL. So stayed tuned for my updates. And thanks to all the staff at Sam & Danni's who took such good care of me.....you're all awesome. Nala

I'm coming....Take me, take me!!

Went and saw Nala today. Boy was she excited to get out and go to the arena. The girls said she just wouldn't let them put drops in her ears today, they tried everything, even taking her into the kitchen area.....said it was the first time she wouldn't cooperate, so I said I'd try. We went and ran around the arena for awhile...she loves it when you chase her and pretend to try to catch her. Then I sat with her, wrapped the leash around her mouth once, hugged her close and did the drops and gave lotza praise. She was fine. Suggested to the girls they try that next time she doesn't want to cooperate :)

She is so full of energy and just runs like a crazy girl around and around. Then we go outside to the fenced in yard and she gets to sniff and run and usually will potty. She likes to go back in then and play a bit more get some love and then ready to go.....til she sees where she's going back to :(

I told her there would be someone coming to see her this weekend while I was gone....she didn't look impressed, but once she sees someone coming for her she'll be trying to jump out of the kennel. She really needs her own foster home to get her ready for her forever home, and so as the ones in foster care are adopted she'll be able to get there, as long as they don't have cats....this girl DOES NOT like cats.....Period!!! Just want to let everyone know she is a good girl and I'll keep going to see her and Lincoln Buddy whenever I can and will keep ya updated.

Nala's ad hoc Foster Mom

Sunday, November 6, 2005

Hi, Nala here!

Well, it's been a busy time for me. The RAGOM fosters are so full with the other dogs they have that I've been put on the "waiting to get my own foster home" list. I was at a great home, but I just couldn't leave the cat alone. Guess in my previous life some cat must have not been nice to me (ok, so it's not fair blaming the cat)!! Anyway, since I couldn't learn to get along with the cat, it was neccesary for me to go back on the waiting list, which meant going to a boarding facility. Eventually, LB (Lincoln Buddy 05-235) and I ended up in St. Cloud at a very nice Spa. I just don't care for all the commotion. When I was brought to the Spa I was ok til we got to the kennel part, then I wanted to run away. So my "ad hoc" foster mom brought me out to this big area where I could run a bit and then just try to calm down with some loving and her telling me it would be ok. Easy for her to say, she was going to her own Golden home.

You know, overall I'm a good girl, lots of energy, love to run and be chased and just play. I think I'd do best in a home with no cats (ya think?), other dogs and no small kids....6+ or so would be ok. I have the cutest ears and softest fur...you would love petting me and getting loved in return. I think a place with a fenced yard would be awesome as I have a lot of running to do and I love being outside....that's what I miss most about being at the Spa. So look a little closer....you'll see I may not look like a Golden....but I've got the personality if not the looks :) So I'll do my best to keep you updated, but since they don't allow you to use the computer whenever you want, I do it when I can. I am sssooo ready to go to my forever home, but have to wait to be in foster care for at least 5 days before I can be adopted. Meanwhile, keep me in mind, feel free to contact Placementatragom [dot] org for more info, etc. on me. I'll be seeing you....soon I hope!! Nala
