Harley 06-433

Profile

10/15/06: Gorgeous Harley has arrived at his new foster home in Iowa! This dog is such a gentle giant, weighing in at around 90 pounds and is long, tall, and lanky. He is sweet as can be, and just loves to lean his head against your leg for some love. Harley was surrendered by a very loving family, and it shows since he is a real doll! However, the family had a 2 month old baby and Harley had recently begun having some separation issues and getting very nervous when his parents left the house. Considering this, they felt he deserved more time and attention and hoped he would find a home where he can blossom back into the stress-free, fantastic dog he had always been before. He arrived in our home last night, and here are some of the things we know about him so far:

Harley is great with other pets. He settled very quickly into our house with our female dog and two cats, and came from a house where he lived with another male dog and two cats. He is very sweet with these animals too. Our dog Millie is quite a pest and has lots of energy and likes to play. Harley didn?t really want to play, but was perfectly happy to run around the house with Millie and took all her pestering without even a bark, growl, or an evil look!

Harley is very well trained. He attended obedience when he was young, and knows Sit, Down, Wait, Stay, Heel, and some other fun tricks. He definitely wants to please and has been very obedient and really quite sweet and gentle. Despite his big stature, he has been less likely to knock anything over than our crazy 60 pound golden mix, moving around carefully. He walks very well on a leash, especially well with the gentle leader. We went on a long walk and he enjoyed the scenery, did a little sniffing, and seemed to have a good time.

He really is a love bug and just loves to sit by you?next to the sofa, on the floor next to the computer, etc. While he does like to be petted, he won?t bug or beg and will just kind of settle near you if not getting petted. However, if you sit on the floor with him, he will plunk himself right onto your lap! Since I?m only 5 feet tall, Harley is actually taller than me when he is sitting and I am sitting on the floor, so when he comes right up for some love it looks pretty funny!

It is so obvious that Harley?s family loved him very much. The real issue that Harley seems to have is related to possible separation anxiety, which the family believes is a result of his adjustment to having a new baby in the home. Harley is crate trained and has been since a puppy, but in the months leading up to the baby and since the baby has been there, Harley has tried to get out of the crate, and successfully broke out before. If out, he would get into the garbage and cat box. This seems to be the challenge with Harley, and for this reason it may be good to have Harley in a place where someone is home at least part time. However, I can?t say this for sure because we have yet to witness any of this behavior. We have been home with him all last night and all Sunday. We also both teach and just started our fall break, so will be home virtually all week. Because of this, we?re going to work with lots of positive training this week for some mental exercise, get lots of walks and physical exercise, and practice leaving for increasing periods of time to help alleviate any possible separation anxiety.

Harley is just sweet as pie. He has the softest fur, a gorgeous light golden color, and such a cute pink nose! We will be heading to the vet tomorrow, and will be working over the next few days to find out about the separation issue, so we will keep you updated.

Harley has been with us for just over a month, and I just can't tell you how much we will miss Harley when he leaves; he is such a sweet and special dog. And what a cutie (see pictures of adorable Harley sleeping!). He really deserves a forever home as great as he is, and we are determined to find that! We have really noticed that now that he is feeling comfortable he is really not having any anxiety issues at all. We've still been leaving him in a dog-proofed room. The only thing at all we've noticed is that there are nose prints on the window and some dirt on the windowsill where he looks out. But he is really calm about being left now, and he's been alone for as long as 6 hours or so without any destructive behavior or any sign of anxiety like drool, etc. So we know that it is even more important to find Harley's forever family so that he can begin to trust them and feel comfortable in his NEW home living the golden life! Harley's ready! If you think he might be ready for your family, please contact placementatragom [dot] org.

As you can see from these pics, Harley loves the snow! It’s almost all melted away here in NE Iowa already, but he enjoyed it while it lasted. Today Harley had a visit from a prospective family. Unfortunately, it was not a good fit, but we did learn some important things from the visit about the forever home we would like to see for Harley. First, Harley seems to love people and I’m sure he will make an amazing addition to anyone’s family because he got right in the middle of things and plopped down on everyone’s feet while they were visiting! However, we think he would do best in a home where he would not live with young kids. He would be fine being around young kids and actually does great with kids and lets them hug on him. But he was a little standoffish. In part I think this is because he is SUCH a calm dog. So he stays very calm with the kids, but doesn’t seem quite as happy as he usually is. We think he would be fine to have kids that visit him, but living with small children, I think especially if there were multiple small children who might have friends who don’t recognize doggie boundaries, he would not be happy. So we’ve listened to Harley and will try to find him a family with older kids—probably older teenagers—or a family with no children or children who visit occasionally.

Harley is such a big sweetheart and really deserves the perfect fit. We’re especially biased because he has just captured our hearts and we’ve just fallen in love with Harley ourselves. We were in tears thinking about him leaving because he is so special! But this means it is also even more important to find that perfect family for Harley! If you are looking for a big, calm, super-sweet boy that will think you walk on water just for loving him, then Harley is for you!

Here are some key things to know about Harley:

· A love bug—will follow you around just to sit at your feet and nap, and will plop himself in your lap for hugs if you sit on the floor with him

· Great with both cats and dogs

· Super calm inside (has not knocked over anything despite being 95 pounds, more than can be said for the 60 pound resident dog!). But he is also happy to be active when he goes walking or jogging. He doesn’t seem to require lots of exercise, but also seemed to love the hikes we’ve taken that have been several hours, and is a great jogging companion.

· Knows his commands well—Sit, Down, Stay, Wait, “In your house” (for crate) and “Go lay down” (for bed). But I think he would like to know more too because he is very smart and highly trainable. He is of course potty-trained and has no medical issues.

· Does get nervous without people and wants to look outside to see where they are (hence some claw marks on a door when he tries to stand and look out). But otherwise no destructive behavior. He has been kept in a dog-proofed room and given a peanut butter Kong when we leave. However, I believe after working to establish trust that he would be fine with free roam. Another dog might help this, but isn’t necessary.

I hope he’ll capture your heart like he has ours. Please don’t let Harley’s size scare you away. He is a very laid back boy and this way there is just more of this sweetheart to love!

Harley is just going on with being a real cutie, and yesterday charmed all the kids in the neighborhood when we sat out on the porch in the gorgeous weather we had here. He was great and very gentle with the kids, just letting them pet him and attempt to "shake" (even though he doesn't do that) by taking his paw, to which he just smiled politely. So Harley is also good with kids!

There are two new pictures because I just wanted folks to see what a great office mate Harley is! If your feet are cold while you work sitting at your desk, he will keep them warm. And if your work is stressing you out, just look down at Harley's smiling face (or, as you can see in the picture, he can look up at yours), and he will make your day. I thought these were particularly cute since he seemed to be sitting in almost a frog-like position! Right now he is just sleeping at my feet while I type and dreaming about having some treats!

Well, it’s official. Harley is an angel! Ok, he was officially an angel for Halloween! But he is a real sweetie the rest of the time too. He had a great time watching for trick-or-treaters yesterday and gave us the official bark anytime one was coming near. He just smiled at the kids and was calm as can be after alerting us to their presence! Otherwise, not too much excitement here. Harley is doing well being kept in a bedroom while we are gone, and has not been destructive. However, he is VERY excited when we get back, and we heard his big long legs standing up on the door the last time we came home. But this seems to be when we get home, not when we leave. He has been eating from a crate, so we may eventually try that again. He is crate trained, and goes right in on the command “go in your house” but since his previous owner said that one of the recent issues was that Harley had some anxiety when left in his crate, we are slowly getting back to that point and only creating positive associations with that right now—meals in the crate and then while the resident dog eats her food he sits in his crate with the door closed and his own treat. So far, so good! However, I would still be very reticent to just leave him in his crate for fear of creating a relapse of anxiety, so while he is said to be crate trained, I wouldn’t count on that right now. I would say any potential family should work on gaining his trust before then working with him to train him back to that point.

Harley would do so well with a refresher in obedience! We work with him a bit, but he follows commands so well that I think he’d have a good time bonding with someone while learning some new ones. He is definitely a pleaser, and also food motivated, so he would learn really quickly too. We just love having him here, but hope there is someone out there who is ready for this big, blond bombshell! He really deserves it. Please contact placement if you think it could be you!

Harley has been a great boy here, and has been making friends and having a good time hanging out with his foster family. Harley went to the Rochester PetCo event last week and loved all the dogs and people. He is the perfect height to be petted without even bending down, so he got lots and lots of pets! This past week he has once again shown us what a sweetheart he is to humans and fur kids alike. As you can see in the picture, he is happy as a clam with other dogs (he just sits and smiles as resident dog Millie uses him as a pillow) and with kitties (as you can see with one of our two cats). But the funniest thing this week was when I bumped my funny bone and started yelling out in pain, he came running over and immediately started to "hug" me, laying down and putting his paws around me! It was so sweet!

Harley has also been very well behaved. He responds to his name immediately and knows his basic commands quite well. He also does what I would consider the perfect amount of barking. The only time he ever barks is when someone is at the door, and he barks one or two times until he can see them or until they start to come in. I actually like this, since I'm glad to know when someone is at the door, and it also lets the person at the door THINK there is a big ole' dog ready to get them. What they don't know is Harley would melt as soon as they would pet him! He has been left alone again with little to no problem. By "little" I mean he was not destructive in any way, but he did jump up on the bed and eat his peanut butter Kong there, getting some on the sheets. But how can someone resist a big comfy bed, so definitely not his fault! Otherwise, he seemed to do really well and has not seemed stressed by being left alone at all and I would say is just a typical Velcro Golden, not a dog with separation anxiety. If you think you might be interested in Harley the Gentle Giant, please email placementatragom [dot] org. He deserves a loving home where he can get lots of exercise and love!

Great news! We’ve been working with Harley this week leaving for increasing periods of time just in case he has any separation issues, and he stayed for over 1 hour tonight without any problem! And he hasn’t shown any signs at all since he has been here of anxiety over being left alone. He had been whining at his previous home while in his crate and getting really anxious, so we did not actually try the crate. Instead, we had him in a bedroom that was pretty much dog proofed, though there were pieces of furniture he could have chewed if he had tried. Yet nothing was at all out of order when we got back and there were no signs of scratching at the door or drooling! He did so well, and since with separation anxiety most of the destructive behavior happens within the first ½ hour, this likely means that this is not the problem. It honestly could have been just the new baby in his other household, or a lack of exercise, or both, that brought on his stress. However, here he seems to be doing great and I am increasingly hopeful that this is not going to be an issue at all! Harley is definitely a Velcro dog, but so far this has not translated into anything atypical.

Harley has been having fun playing around the house and we are seeing him really blossom. Here are some pics of him after a good play session with the resident dog. A happy boy indeed! We will be at PetCo in Rochester tomorrow if you’d like to meet this lovebug!

Well, the rain has not let up and the weather has been just awful, so we’ve found ways to entertain ourselves inside! As you can see from these new pictures, we have confirmation that Harley DOES love being vacuumed! It is really hilarious. I was dustbusting wet leaves from the front entry way, and Harley just kept getting closer and closer and staring directly at the dustbuster. Since his previous owners said he did like it, I gave it a try and he was in heaven!

I wish I could explain how cute Harley’s big nose is. I hope you can tell what a sweetheart of a face he has. He is always expressing such joy at just being with people. He is coming a bit out of his shell with our dog, too. He’s started doing more playing with our resident dog, Millie, which makes her very happy. But he is still very relaxed and pretty quiet all the time. We heard him bark for the first time when the doorbell rang today, but it was only 1 bark and then he just wanted to know who was there! Otherwise, not too much but sitting in laps and getting some love from humans, even if — as the picture indicates — he can only fit ¼ of himself into a lap! He takes whatever he can get.

Harley will be at the PetCo in Rochester this coming Saturday, Oct. 21. If you think you might be interested in Harley, please email placementatragom [dot] org!

Just a quick update on Harley. We went to the vet and everything looks great! He came in to RAGOM already neutered and UTD on shots, and he was heartworm negative. The vet said this 4 year old boy is in great shape! As a fun reward we took the dogs hiking…Harley loved it, and you can see he was happy to pose for a picture even though the weather was not all that great. He likes walking, and also seemed to enjoy the running that we did a bit yesterday. He ran with his previous owner, so I suspect if someone wanted to run with him regularly he would enjoy it, though would not require it. He rode very well in the car, both when he was the only dog and when he rode with our resident dog.

A few other tidbits of information: Harley loves to be brushed, and word is that he even loves to be vacuumed, though we haven’t tried that yet! However, it gives you a good idea of his temperament—a real sweetheart. I sat and brushed him nearly 15 minutes and barely any hair had come off at all, so I do not think he is going to shed as much as other Goldens might. For comparison, about 15 seconds with my Golden mix would yield a full brush! He sleeps great on his doggie bed at the foot of or next to your bed.

One issue I forgot to mention previously is that Harley has jumped fences 4 ½ - 5 ft, so he really would need to go to a home where he will be on leash or a tie out, or where there is a taller fence. Today we worked on some desensitizing when leaving, getting dressed and then coming back, just to help in case Harley might be nervous about that, but just because of work circumstances at least one of us has been home all day. When my husband left to run errands he walked over to the window to watch him drive away, but then came over to me for some petting and eventually took a nap. Will let you know more as our week progresses. Until then, we are having lots of fun with this big, sweet boy!
