Hey there, Tobie here! What a day I had. I've been training my new foster mom, and geeze is this hard work. First, I decided to give her a lesson on chewing. She already knows that I love to eat smelly old socks, but for some reason they have been nonexistant around here (they keep giving them to something called a hamper, that's one lucky animal but I haven't found where they keep it yet). Today my foster dad left a cardboard box on the floor instead of taking it to the recycle bin, so I thought it was time to show them my second favorite chewy thing. Mom thought it was pretty funny that I tore all the flaps off before Dad noticed and took it out to the garage, she says I'm awesome because I've got the kids picking up their socks and now Dad has to take his recycle boxes out to the garage instead of dumping them on the floor! She told me if I can just learn how to clean the house too she'd never be able to give me up....hmmm, I'll have to work on that.
Once the chewy training was done, I trained the kids how to play one of my favorite games - soccer. I also have a new nickname: "Airbud!" Mom found out I liked to play soccer with the kids in my old family, so now the kids here kick the soccer ball and I chase it down and carry it around the yard. I really, really love kids, when they come to say hi to me it makes me sooooo happy. Today Mom also noticed I got really happy and ran to Dad FAST when he called me, so she knows I must really like guys too. I don't run nearly as fast when Mom calls me and I do for the kids and Dad, they just make me especially excited.
Next on the agenda was to train mom that I do NOT, repeat, NOT like baths. I tell ya, I came into the yard and saw that shampoo bottle next to the hose and tried to veer wide and get back into the garage, but mom caught me and next thing I knew I looked like a big poodle covered with bubbles. I stood patiently and suffered through the whole thing, but I gave her "the look" to make sure she knew that this was NOT on my happy list. I think she got the message. I must say though, tonight I smell wonderful!
One other thing I think I finally got through my foster family's skulls today was the fact that when I go to the bathroom I need some PRIVACY. I don't really care where I pee, but for serious business I need to find a pine tree or a bush to hide under or behind, and I need to make sure NO ONE is watching or I'll go hunting for a new spot. If Mom doesn't give me time to find a suitable private spot, then I don't go, and if I don't get a chance to go for too long .... well, let's just say mom is making sure I have LOTS of private time in the yard now. She also told me it's ridiculous that she has to turn her back and pretend to be busy doing something else before I'll do my business, but GEEZE - a mature gentleman like me deserves a little privacy don't you think?
Anyway, all this people training has me wiped out, so I'm gonna go take a nap. More later!

Tobie came to join us last night, and boy is he a sweet, MELLOW dog. He loves kids and is doing great with my 4 (ages 5-10) plus about 4 other neighbor kids who have come to visit him. He does great with my cats, hardly even bothers to sniff them. His family had reported to us that he likes to eat socks, especially children's socks, and this is definitely true - last night we took a walk and walked by a sock someone had left in the park (nice and stinky I'm sure) and he picked it up and started chewing! Then when he got home we found him chewing one that my kids had missed. He let me take them away without so much as a blink, though. And let me tell you, the average number of socks that my kids leave around the house has plummeted from about 8/day to none - I could get used to this!
In my yard his manners have been impeccable. Met the other dogs very nicely, stays in the yard with me, barks here and there but not much. If I don't pay attention he kind of moseys away following one smell after another, but then comes back when I call. Last night he slept in our bedroom as quiet as a mouse and made it 8.5 hours with no accidents.
Tobie does not act like a 10 year old dog, more like a mature and mellow 4 year old. He loves to play fetch and I'm betting once he settles in he and my 6 year old female Golden will be playing together. I don't notice any stiffness, and he runs fast when there is a Frisbee to catch. He isn't incessant though, and after a little bit of playtime he settles down with his toy to take a breather. He isn't needy either, is happy to get some pets but then goes off and lies down on his own.
More to come as we get to know this guy better.
