Dudley 05-307

Profile

10/15/05: Dudley is a gorgeous 7 year old coppery red Golden who has been with me for a week now and has settled in beautifully. He is a big guy, weighing in at 76lbs. - very gentle, sweet and affectionate. A really nice dog! The vet says he's in great shape! We go on long walks and he's good on leash. I initially tried the Gentle Leader with him as he is strong but he hated it and now we go without it and he's fine. He gets along with my resident cat and I'm told he's great with kids but needs a home without small children because he's so big and strong.

Dudley has a fan club! It's wonderful to hear so many folks inquire as to the well-being of Dudley and then to be amazed at his ability to carry on with his life despite his cancer prognosis. Yes, he's still here.

I've enclosed a photo of his expressive face and one of him happily destroying his St. Patrick's Day toy. I thought that since he is so red he must be part Irish and bought him a green toy. These days he loves going outside & destroying my lawn by rolling around on top of his bones after he's dug them up from the garden. Carry on, Dudley!

Dudley's visit last Monday to the veterinarian at the University of Minnesota did not have a happy outcome. A scan and biopsy revealed an aggressive cancerous tumor in his nose which is destroying bone and causing nose bleeds. The official diagnosis is adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavity. All we can do now is try to make him as comfortable and feel as loved as possible for his remaining time. He's currently taking anti-inflammatory medication to help with the discomfort from the tumor and a Chinese herb called yunnan bai yao to help with the nose bleeds. So far it's working.

Dudley continues to be the very handsome and sometimes feisty guy who came to me as a foster in October. Our walks are a bit slower & he seems increasingly subdued, but the tail is held high and the strut is still there. He's always been "Mr. Confident." Even though Dudley has not been a "Velcro" kind of guy, he is more intent on following me around the house these days and is no longer content to nap in another room. In fact, as I write this, he is sleeping at my feet under my computer desk. Snoring.
