George 06-200

Profile

5/13/06: George was a stray who walked up to a Good Samaritan's house and made himself welcome about a month ago. The Good Samaritan couldn't keep him long-term so called RAGOM and I welcomed the opportunity to foster a senior Golden. We met this afternoon and when it was time to go, George wasn't at all sure that he should leave his friend to come with me (and the feeling was mutual). After we coaxed him into the van and gave him a couple of treats, he laid down and slept all the way home.

Once we got home, George apparently thought one of my plants was a pine tree so baptized it as only a male dog can do. He ate a good dinner, took a swim, had a bath and now is sprawled out on a doggie bed behind a babygate so I can run him outside as soon as he wakes up. He was an outside dog in his former life and we have to take care of that little old housetraining issue and the sooner the better.

George is a very handsome purebred Golden with a reddish coat and white face - - he captured my heart the minute I laid eyes on him. My preference for seniors is because they are GReat companions and are so mellow. Oh, they still love to play and take walks and will soak up as much attention as you have time to give, but they aren't demanding. George is a cuddler...if I'm standing, he leans in and when I sit down, he scoots in close and lays his big old head in my lap.

George was vetted while with his Good Samaritan and treated for lymes disease; otherwise, he just needs to put on a little weight.

George has an appointment with the vet on Monday, so will update you then.

Hello Everyone! George and Gracie here.

Gracie: We have to tell you, we've had quite an exciting day. First off, foster mom made George his fancy breakfast so he can gain the weight he needs. I'm watching my weight so I just went for a swim in the kiddie pool.

Gracie: Then foster mom asked us if we wanted to go for a ride in the car. She said something about checking out a retirement home. We drove and drove and ended up getting pretty tired so George and I snoozed. We woke right up when foster mom stopped the car. We jumped right out of the car and there were lots of trees and woods and lots of new smells.

Gracie: And, wouldn't you know it, out of the house comes our old buddy, Cody.

Cody welcomed us with happy tail wags and told us all about his new digs and asked if we'd like a tour. He took us through the yard to some steps. George didn't really care for the steps so Cody told him about the trail he could use that ran right next to the steps.

Gracie: All of a sudden, there it was... a huge swimming pool! I couldn't get into the water fast enough. George took a little longer, but he wasn't far behind. And then, if that wasn't cool enough, tennis balls started flying through the air. George ran after the ones thrown from shore, but I preferred to perfect my belly flop off the end of the dock, so I chased the ones that went flying high through the air.

George: We spent a lot of time visiting at the swimming pool and then it was time to go into the residence part to take a look around. Cody offered Gracie and I refreshments and bones to chew on. After taking the inside tour, Cody mentioned that he REALLY enjoyed his home and that if Gracie and I were interested in staying, he had a couple of empty dog beds that we could have. He told us that he was kind of lonely since his Brookie

crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June.

Gracie: George and I talked it over with each other and with foster mom and came to the conclusion that this was definitely the place that we wanted to spend the rest of our days. Not only would we have our buddy, Cody, but George could fish for minnows all day if he wanted to - and I would be welcome to dig all the holes I want to.

George: I don't know if she knows that I know, but she buries bones in those holes. I'm not sure what she's saving them for.... I guess it's just her "thing". She doesn't let me get too close to those buried bones though. Gracie will also be able to do her water aerobics so that she can get trim again.

Gracie: You just had to bring that weight thing up again, George, didn't you?!?! ?! Good-night George...

George: Good-night Gracie....

This is George and Gracie's foster mom - I just want to thank RAGOM (and Tamra, George's former foster) for giving me the opportunity to foster these two wonderful souls. I'm absolutely thrilled that they found Tim and Cody to spend their lives with. I couldn't have asked for a better environment for my sweet fosters to thrive in. Gracie is going to keep those boys on their paws!!!

Here are a couple of pictures of George prancing up and down the shoreline. He is a riot...the minute I open the gate, he runs down to the lake and splashes through the water to try to catch the minnows.

Guess I've never told you about George's mannerisms...he is calm and gentle, his tail is wagging constantly, he doesn't bark or countersurf, he isn't destructive, he loves to be brushed, he doesn't guard his food, he doesn't have separation or storm anxiety, he loves people of all ages and loves to ride in the car. What more could you ask for?

All this beautiful senior needs is his very own human to give him lots of love and attention.

Everyone loves a white-faced Golden and George is really enjoying the attention he's getting when we're out and about. His tail is always in motion and he gets very excited when he sees children. His Good Samaritan said he loved their grandchildren.

The vet did a comprehensive exam yesterday and George's Report Card showed pretty good health for his age altho he needs to put on 7-10 pounds before they will schedule his neuter and dental cleaning. He also has a slightly enlarged prostrate and a pretty nasty ear infection that could have permanently affected his hearing.

In the meantime, we're making steady progress on housetraining; in fact, no accidents at all in the last two days (thanks, in part, to the fact we've spent lots of time outside doing yardwork). Good boy!
