After a 16 hour drive and with the help of many different transport volunteers, Koda made the trip from Oklahoma City to Minneapolis. The Sooner Golden Retriever Rescue has agreed to work with us to help place some of their rescued goldens. Oklahoma has the unfortunate situation of being short on foster homes and adoptive homes and having lots of goldens in need. RAGOM, on the other hand, is very fortunate to have many wonderful adoptive homes eagerly awaiting the adoption of their new family member. Koda was originally found as a stray and has spent the last three months boarded at a vet clinic because there were no foster homes available. He was in loving hands, but I think he is happy to now have a large yard to run in and a soft place to hang his head at night.
Koda rode very well uncrated in numerous different cars with many different people on his 16 hour trek yesterday. Koda is a beautiful golden with the big blocky head that so many people love. He could afford to gain a few pounds (wish I had that problem). He is a friendly boy that enjoys the company and attention of people. He met my three dogs with no problems. I imagine he was quite tired and a little nervous last night, but you should have seen him this morning -- he was so happy to get to stretch his legs, he ran around and around my backyard. We spent part of the afternoon throwing and retrieving tennis balls. He's not so sure about giving it back to me, but he is learning that if he doesn't, well who is going to throw the ball? After a bit, he drops it on the ground and looks at you, like ok, I'm ready to go again. As a stray, we don't know his exact age. The estimate is 7 years, but he acts more like a 4 or 5 year old. I've only had him for 24 hours so am getting to know him, but so far what I see is a happy boy that loves attention, he is treat motivated, does like to countersurf so I have to keep my kitchen clean (good thing), gets along well with dogs and people (don't know about cats), and other than one initial leglifting, he appears to be housebroken. He is reported to have had some ear infections and we are completing the medicine that was sent with him. I let him pick where he wanted to sleep last night and he settled in on the bedroom floor. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots and ready to meet some lucky family.
