Gabby and her sister Gay are very sweet, mixed breed pups (possibly golden retriever and collie or sheltie) who were found running the streets of a small town in Iowa. Both pups are thought to be 3-4 months old. They were picked up and taken to the local shelter with hopes that someone would claim them. No one did. So, they spent a few days at the shelter...a very sad place with little heat, almost no light, and that smelled awful. They only had human contact (food, attention, or exercise) once a day thanks to a volunteer who stopped by each day to care for them. This shelter had no regular staff.

Thankfully, this volunteer contacted RAGOM and asked if we could take these sweet girls. They were rescued from the shelter on what was to be their last day of life and brought into foster care. Both girls were very thin and very smelly....but very sweet and loving. They quickly learned that home was a great place to be--warm, safe, and dry--and after a bath and pedicure, they started to learn what it was like to have love and attention (and more than one meal each day!). They are the most loving pups...will do anything for petting! And very well behaved as puppies go. Other than normal housetraining issues, they are very easy to have around. And absolutely adorable!!

Unfortunately, after a few days in foster care, Gabby came down with Parvovirus--a very deadly and extremely contagious disease that strikes unvaccinated puppies and dogs. She is in the hospital now getting care, and will probably be there until the middle of next week. The vet told me that she was a lucky pup...without vet care, she would have certainly died out there on the streets in this winter weather. Now, thanks to RAGOM and the wonderful people at the vet clinic, she is expected to come through just fine and grow up to be a healthy, happy dog.

Gay is being watched closely for any symptoms of Parvo, but so far she is healthy. We will be keeping these girls for awhile to make sure they are disease-free, and to get them vaccinated, but then they will be ready for adoption. They will make wonderful pets! Both girls are very responsive to humans and seem to want to please, and I think should be easy to train. Housetraining is going quite well, and they are crate trained. Gay is working on learning "sit" and "off". Please consider adding one of these girls to your family! After such a rough start to their lives, they deserve nothing but a wonderful loving home.

What a wild couple of weeks since Gay's last update!

Gay has been spayed and it slowed her down for less than a nanosecond. You would never know she has an owie on her tummy, other than the bad haircut. She's a little itchy but that means she's healing! She was quiet popular at the vet clinic. They called her a "cute little peanut." Suprisingly, our little drama queen has taken this whole "operation-thing" in stride and acts like she spent the day at a spa!

Gay found out how much she LOVES blizzards! Last Friday, we got clobbered with 21 inches of snow and Gay has decided to be a Siberian Husky! She bounds through the snow piles like a squirrel hopping across a nut filled lawn. Gay loves to chomp snowballs! Fetching snowballs in a blizzard is great fun, even if they are really hard to see! Everything about snow is fun to her. She tunnels, digs, eats, rolls, romps and generally has a blast in it.

Gay is completely housetrained. We haven't had any accidents in the house in several weeks. Our other dog, Shane, is now marking stuff up, and we hope having Gay spayed will put an end to his Diva-like behavior. Gay thinks Shane is cute, but needs to get a grip.

We have Gay crate trained. Some of you know that I have a dog biscuit business in our home and Gay thinks she died and went to heaven. Anyhow, we toss a handful of little "bait" treats in her crate and she goes in and hunts them up. She now knows she's going to get a treat when she goes in her crate, so she races us to the crate and if the door is open, flings herself in so hard that she's actually moved the crate a few feet across the tile floor! Can you say "Food Motivated?"

We also think Gay would make an awesome Fly-Ball or Agility dog. She LOVES to catch toys out of the air and runs after them very quickly. She is quite agile and light on her feet. She is so good at catching tennis balls now that we can throw them pretty far or in a strange way and she deftly plucks them out of the air without even looking like she made an effort.

Gay is going to come back to my work place this week. The gals in Activities really like her so she is going to spend the day in the Nursing home entertaining the old folks. She really enjoys that, and the residents love her. Life is good when you're a 6 month old cutie-patootie!

It's been two weeks since Princess Gay's last update! Time flies when you're having fun with a puppy!

Miss Gay is really filling out. She's not a lot bigger since she's arrived, but now you don't see every rib sticking out!

Gay got to spend last weekend with some friends while we were working up in MPLS at the Pet Expo. She stayed with a couple and their two teenaged kids and their beefy chocolate lab. He wasn't exactly smitten with her charms, I think I heard him go "whoo hoo, it's about time!" when I picked her up and took her home!

Gay loves to torture our kitten. She doesn't hurt her, but the kitten is always damp. Lucy has all of her claws, so if she wasn't having fun, Gay would know it! Gay likes to chase her around the house and lick her. Gay is also interested in Samcat the Fatcat, but he give her a stern growl and hiss and she leaves him alone.

She's gotten better at reading the big dogs, too. Two weeks ago Shane finally told her off and put a little owie on her nose. Gay was bleeding, Shane was peeing on himself and Rosie was standing there, not too sure who to egg on! Our house looked like a crime scene. Of course, Little Miss Princess Diva Gay was soooooooo upset...she wouldn't let me hold a damp wash cloth to her boo-boo to stop the bleeding and she was singing like soprano in Italian opera. Goodness!! Of course, her owie was less than an inch long, a mere scrape, but to her...it was a HUGE deal. But Shane definately told her he was the boss, and she has shown appropriate respect to both dogs since. Shane will even seek her out to play tug now!

I think Gay is wondering why no one has shown any interest in her! She's cute as a button, nice, smart, easy on the eyes and soft as a bunny! So...what's the deal? She really loves to play fetch, comes when called and especially loves being held and cuddled. Don't you want a furry little drama queen to come rule your home? She's quite funny...and talkative and loveable and a real crowd pleaser. The neighbors all love her and everyone oohhs and ahhs at what a cute little pup she is....

C'mon...it's spring time! The tulips are starting to pop (at least at my house they are!) and the snow is melting...and it's time to think about bringing home a little fuzzbutt to play with in the back yard on warm spring days !

Gay is here and life is one big party! Gay is part of the Gabby-Gay sister act that came into RAGOM's care a few weeks ago, but sister Gabby came down with Parvovirus. Both kids were quarantined, and fortunately for Gay, she never developed the illness.

I read Gabby's update and her foster thinks she's part Sheltie, but I am going to politely disagree based on what I see with Gay. Gay has big black polka dots on her tongue, a black ring around her tail, a short wide muzzle and the easy to recognize stiff-legged gait of a Chow! I am pretty sure she's 3/4 Golden and 1/4 Chow (I had a friend with a Chow and they are pretty easy to spot). Gay is darling. She is a very pretty girl, and her ears are not quite standing up. They may not either, given Gabby's ears are already up. It gives her a very quizzical expression. Her coat is very soft and fuzzy, like a cotton cloud. She does not have any tail or fanny feathers, just short fuzz.

Gay likes to play with the kitten Lucy, but got a good whap on the nose from Samcat the Fatcat. She backed off but was still very intersted in smelling under his tail. Needless to say, he wasn't too interested in letting her get close enough to smell that.

Gay interacts with our dogs, Rosie is fine with her, but Shane the diva is upset that there's someone cuter than him in the house. He's not intersted in sharing toys with her or playing with her. Gay doesn't seem to be too bothered by that. She is great with kids, cats, dogs, dust bunnies and grown ups! She takes everything in stride without being too spooked by new situations.

We don't think she is housetrained just yet, so we watch her like a hawk. She learned she gets a party when she goes potty, so it should be very quick to help her know to "go" when out. She went from 9:30 last night to 5:30 this morning without a problem. She hasn't had an accident in the house, but more due to our diligence than her knowing better! She crates up just fine and likes her teething toys that have a little peanut butter or treats tucked in. She whines and growls at her toys when she can't quite pull a treat out of a tight spot! We haven't heard her bark yet.

She is learning Sit, Stay and Off...oh, and "Leave the kitty!" She really loves attention and getting hugs and she gives very sweet puppy kisses.

Gay is a doll, and I am sure there is a perfect loving family out there for her. She's a sweet girl, pretty laid back, listens very nicely and really likes to be around people. She does exhibit a little of the "Chow" aloofness. She likes to be loved and to get attention, but isn't IN YOUR FACE to get petted. She gets her love and then settles down to watch the action. Oh, and I know she's Golden. I got the paw.
