6/25/06: Hi, my name is Zoe... or ZoZo or Baby Z... I guess I'm not really sure yet but they've been calling me all these Z names since I got here last night. Foster mom says it fits me because I'm a spitfire!... and she said she means that in the best way possible! I'm a 13-week old Lab mix and have big brown eyes and look just like a Lab except I think my ears are a little small... but that's ok, foster mom says maybe I won't get so many ear infections! These nice people from RAGOM brought me and my sister Ginny 06-279 and a few other nice dogs from a shelter down south where they said we needed to leave right away or something bad might have happened! I'm so glad I never had to find out what it was... we had a really long van ride yesterday so I was REALLY happy to get to a house with a yard and a big furry playmate. At first I thought it might be my mom but when I tried to nurse, it wasn't like I remembered and it turns out he didn't like me biting him there. But we still had so much fun and we ran circles all around the yard in the rain... boy did it feel good to stretch my legs! Finally foster mom said she couldn't stand my smell anymore so we went in the house for a bath... that took a long time and I was a little scared, but it turned out all right because she is much more cuddly with me now.

Here are a few details she told me to write: I checked out great at the vet today, am up-to-date on shots and have already been spayed... whatever that means. I have an ear infection but hey, that's not bad for a kid who's spent half her life behind bars. I really like other dogs and wasted no time before playing with my fur sibling here, but I'm still a little shy around people. Mom says I need to make up for some lost time, and something about a big word like "Socialization". I guess I didn't get enough of that at the shelter. But she says we have big plans this week so I can't wait! More soon...

Love, Zoe

PS- I don't have fleas... I am scratching in my pictures because they put this red thing around my neck and I'm just not sure I want it there!

Updates

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

Um, hello… it’s me, Mason, the resident dog in Zoe’s foster family. I told Mom and Zo that I’d better take a stab at this update thing since they obviously don’t know what’s important to families out there. So, let’s get philosophical for a minute… what is a “Golden” anyway? Is it a breed, a color, a personality… or all of the above? Because seriously -- it’s hard for me to admit this, since I’m used to bossing the Zo-monster around and pretending she’s bugging me and all –- but as her big brother, I think it’s time I stick up for the kid too! Back to my philosophy, I’m a Golden in breed, color and personality. I guess technically Zoe is only 2 of the 3 (she’s a light gold in color). But are you seriously going to hold that against her??? I mean, I’m a pretty picky guy, some have gone so far as to call me ‘spoiled rotten’, and yeah, I have a reputation for copping a little attitude with the fosters, but if I do say so myself, this little sis is a KEEPER! (pleeeease don’t tell her I said that, I do have a reputation to uphold around here). But between you and me, I don’t really WANT you to adopt Zoe. I’m perfectly happy having her around. She isn’t like all those wimpy little puppies that don’t know how to have fun with a big guy like me. She “gets” my game, and gives it back pretty well too. And I know she looks up to me – I can tell b/c she copies so many things I do – and, not to get mushy, but that makes me feel pretty good. Mom says I’m helping her to become a GReat dog and that’s pretty cool. Plus she lets me lick out her bowl when she’s done eating, and shares her bully sticks with me. I know, crazy right? I would NEVER share mine with her. And we play and play and play and she never cries or tattles to Mom when I accidentally pummel her. Hey, we can’t all have her grace and poise now, can we? Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it… don’t adopt Zoe. We don’t want you to. Just let’s keep this discussion between you and me, b/c I think Mom mentioned something about not being ABLE to adopt her right now. Those details are of no concern to me…

Ciao for now, from baby Z’s BIG brother, Mason

HELLLLLOOOOOOO out there! Calling all families who want to adopt a fabulous, fun-loving, adorable puppy (who happens to be 90+% potty-trained, quite the budding athlete, and sleeps like a champ -- what more could you ask for?)... it's me, Zoe, and I'm looking for a family to call my very own! Foster mom thought there would be a line-up of families waiting to meet me when we got back from vacation but that wasn't the case... is it because I don't look like a Golden Retriever? Hey, you know what they say about "don't judge a book by it's cover...", well the same goes for us mixes. So what if I don't look like a Golden, isn't it my personality that you'll love me for? Everyone who meets me tells me I'm a pretty wonderful little girl... and they also say I'm darn cute! So what if my fur is a bit shorter... do you realize how much time that could save you in vacuuming?

Anyway, I'm happy here and my fur brother is just the best! We play all day long and that tires me out so foster mom says I'm the easiest puppy ever! Except that I did accidentally break a very large floor vase the other night... mom says she has no idea how I managed to do it (I'm not sure either!) but it sure made a mess and she just kept saying how lucky I was not to have cut up all of my paws. That's what she gets for not puppy-proofing better... the stuff inside was VERY interesting to me!

Lastly, maybe you are holding out on asking to meet me because mom has been pretty specific about what she wants for me. It's true, she is a little picky. But she says it's only because she loves me so much and mainly she just wants a family that is as wonderful as me, and will give me lots of attention and exercise, and training, and a big fenced yard would be nice, oh and swimming, and maybe even a job... and boy, how I'd love a fur sibling to play with... yeah, ok, we're both a little picky but don't you think I deserve to have it all??? Give me a holler if you think you're the perfect family for me, I can't wait to meet you!!!

xoxo,

baby Z

Zoe's update is overdue because she's been on vacation!!! She had the time of her life up in northern Wisconsin over the holiday, meeting her extended foster family (lots of little kids so we got to work on socialization!), learning to swim, and playing with the family's posse of dogs. Especially Ellie, the chocolate Lab, who taught her not to be afraid of the water and had her splashing around within minutes! She was a HUGE hit with my 4 year old niece, who by the end of the weekend was telling my cousin's kids that she "got to walk her because it was HER dog"... so email placementatragom [dot] org quickly if you want to meet this little girl (fortunately for interested applicants out there, my brother's dog is recovering from major ACL surgery so adding a playful puppy to their family is out of the question right now).

After spending almost 24/7 with little Zoe for the past week and a half, I am a) very attached to her! and b) going to be very picky about the family she goes to. She is a very special little pup who has stolen a huge hunk of my heart. Ok, now more about Zoe...

She is a very precocious little girl, very curious and learns very quickly. Because she was dumped at a shelter with her littermates at a very young age, she is naturally more comfortable with other dogs and a bit shy with humans. It just takes her a little while to learn that she can trust you. She has come a long way, especially with the kids doting on her this weekend, but when the little girls first ran up to her screeching "Zoe Zoe Zoe", she ran under the car and hid instead of running up to them for some loving. She also startles a little with sudden movements or loud noises and used to "hit the ground", but I am seeing very little of that these days. Because of her rough start, I really want her to have a fur sibling "role model" in her forever family to help build her courage and trust of humans, while also providing a playmate and teaching her how to be the best dog she can be. Her humans will have to be patient and committed to training, and although I think kids would be a plus, her forever parents will need to set boundaries and respect her insecurities, and work with her to overcome them. For example, I don't think she is a confident enough puppy to handle toddlers who are given free reign to grab and tug her around like a little toy. But she has all the potential in the world to be a great playmate for kids and dogs alike!!!

Also, she is almost completely housetrained, has only had 1 accident the whole time she's been here, and is pretty good about only chewing toys. I thought nipping the kids would be a bigger problem this weekend but she seems to have reserved that little bit of “affection” for the human she trusts the most – i.e. ME! We’re working on that, as well as a few basic commands. She sits well for a treat, except when she gets so excited that she sits and then jumps up and down with anticipation. But again, she is a quick learner. She is healthy, her ear infection seems to be clearing up quickly, her appetite is great, her energy even better, and she also sleeps like a trooper through the night. She loves her crate, goes in it willingly (but appreciates a treat with it) and sleeps for a good 7-8 hours without a peep! I’ve also left her for up to 4 hours during the day with no accidents and she doesn’t whine or bark much at all. She loves to play with toys and race in circles in the yard, I think she will be a natural ball retriever and, well, I could go on and on… but you really can’t get the gist of this little girl’s character until you meet her… so if you are a loving, active family and have a young-ish dog that wants a fabulous playmate, Zoe would really like to meet you!

PS- we have no idea what she is mixed with… she is definitely mostly Labrador and a little on the small side at roughly 20 lbs (at 3½ months old). I can’t say there is necessarily any Golden Retriever in her, but her personality is Golden as can be! We love her to pieces and wish we could keep her!

Quick note from Zoe's foster mom: I couldn't resist sending in the following "photo documentary". I assure you this is not staged and happened (almost) just as shown. One by one, Zoe collected all the toys that were out and piled them into Mason's coveted bed (the one dog bed he doesn't usually allow fosters to share)... then jumped in, sprawled out and told him to get the heck out of Dodge. Nicely, of course. Despite appearances, none of the participants were injured - or had their feelings hurt - during the filming of this event.
