Jasper 04-313

Profile

Jasper arrived safely in Balsam Lake this afternoon via the Joyceann express. He was a very sad and scared little man, well not so little, actually, he needs to be on a diet. In the few hours that he has been here, his eyes are starting to soften some. Brandy 04-239 has taken a liking to him and I think that has helped him to relax. He will be staying in the RAGOM room in the kennel for a while till I can gain his trust and he figures out he will only be getting lots of love here. I think the gang in the house might be a bit much for the poor guy. Although I don't think it will be very long, just got that feeling.

Jasper has a short tail, like the length of a Springer. It really looks pretty cute, just imagine, nothing on the coffee table going flying when he walks by.

He checked out the whole kennel and never once lifted his leg on anything! Very good for a dog that has been used for breeding all his life and was only neutered a bit more than a week ago. I am really excited about how much progress he will make everyday. This is my first really shy foster dog, normally they are bouncing off the walls!

Tomorrow I will take some pictures and maybe give him a bath, if he's up to that. I just know there is a very sweet man underneath that shyness. I think once he figures out what a golden life is supposed to be like he is just going to bloom!

Jasper is really coming around. For 7 years of his life he has known only a breeding kennel situation. In 30 days that he has been with us, he has gone from a lump in the corner, scared of everything, to running around the kennel with me, wagging his tail, smiling, gathering up all the toys and nudging me constantly for pets and love. He will sit and snuggle for hugs and kisses for however long you are willing to sit there! He loves to chew on his rawhides and bones but doesn't destroy his stuffies. Jasper loves his bed and makes sure all his toys are with in reach! He is great with other dogs and cats, but when my rabbits start hopping around, he is out of there!!

I took Jasper to the vet last week to check out a lump in his throat. The vet thought it was either a bad de-barking operation (which would explain his strange little bark) or a trauma to his throat. It is just scar tissue and he is just fine. This poor guy.

Jasper was just terrified of being outside in an open space. He is now used to having a collar on and a leash, so the next step was to walk him. This poor man would cling to the buildings, then to trees, anything that he could hide near. He is now becoming braver by the day and is starting to enjoy this part of his new life also!

He is so brave and happy when it is just he and I, but does revert back to his shy self when he meets new people. He warms up to women faster than men, but I know that will just take time. He has come such a long way in 30 days, just imagine what he is going to be like in another 30 days!!! He really needs to be in his forever home, bonding with his loving, wonderful mom and/or dad. Don't pass this guy up because he needs some patience and love to work out 7 years of being a breeding machine. What he has shown me in 30 days is quite a miracle. There is not a mean bone in this dog, he is just submissive and needs love to continue to be brave. Do you have the love to help Japser finish blooming into the boy he is going to be?

Jasper has come such a long way in 2 1/2 weeks! The first week he just wanted to stay in the RAGOM room and not explore. Then he finally got brave and started going out in the kennel and exploring. If I sat down, he would come up to get petted but leave if I stood up.

Now he follows me all around the kennel and he's nudging me for pets - I got my first kiss last week! He smiles, sometimes on one side, sometimes a full muzzle smile. That just melts me down! His short little tail is going most of the time and when he gets really silly, his whole butt just wiggles!!! His personality just keeps coming out!

He likes other dogs and warms up to women faster than men. He took a treat from my hand for the first time last week also. If I bend down to do anything, he about pushes me over wanting to get petted now. Yesterday was the first day that I could touch his lower back area without him dropping to the ground, he now has figured out that butt rubs are good! He has almost stopped his submissive urinating, which he did at first, anytime I would reach down to pet him. When I am sitting in my art room he comes running in with his eyes almost squinted close and smiling. I feel like crying to see him this happy! He has just so much love to give the right kind and gentle person.

I was putting up plastic on the windows and left the box on the ground. I went outside and when I came back in, the box was gone, so I went and checked and there Jasper had just shredded it. He was having so much fun!!! Now most people would have gone, oh no, you can't do that! But I thought it was great to see him having a puppy moment! I just quietly cleaned it up, with a smile on my face! He has been a very good boy, not lifting his leg to mark things.

He is on his way over for some loving!! He has is eye squinting going! More next week!

Jasper is starting to improve. He follows me around and will bump my leg to say hi. His little tail is wagging more each day. He is very easily spooked, just throwing a soft fuzzy his way, he will duck and close his eyes as if I'm trying to hurt him. It certainly breaks your heart. But when I see him sniffing around and going in and out with Brandy, Hank and Frieda it makes me feel good he can have normal dog times. He loves his RAGOM room and has a soft comfy bed and a nice window and can see all the goings on in the kennel also. I think he feels very safe there and is also getting a taste of how all animals should be treated. He is a smart guy, he'll figure it out.

More improvements next week!!!
