Parrish 05-301

Profile

10/2/05: I have Parrish (not his real name) at my home now near Rochester. He came to us Friday evening from the Hurricane Katrina region - hitching a ride with a fantastic RAGOM volunteer. I think he was a little stressed when he arrived, but he's better now. Parrish is approximately 9 years old and intact. He had fleas when he got here and is very skinny. He had been dealing with diarrhea and vomiting on Saturday night.

We have been unable to find Parrish's lost family, so he is now available for adoption.

Our sweet Parrish was peacefully put to sleep on March 15th. We had almost 4 years with this incredible dog.

My husband and I were so lucky to have gotten such a great dog. After all that he had been through, Hurricane Katrina, heartworm, losing most of his teeth (they were almost all broken off following the hurricane probably due to being in captivity and trying to get free), the worst case of spondylosis that the vet had ever seen and then a cancer diagnosis after we had only had him about 1 year. Whew! You would never have known that any of that had happened to him because he was still the sweetest dog I’ve ever had or known.

We got him in the May of the year following the hurricane in 2005. He was such a sweetie from the first day we brought him home. So devoted although we had just met! His arthritis (horrible spinal arthritis) and age kept him fairly limited for walk distance but we were out anyway usually twice a day for our walk around the block. I think the change of seasons was always a mystery to Parrish being a southern boy – but he looked really smart in his bright red turtle neck sweater in the winter! Rolling in the snow was pretty fun too!

It didn’t take us two minutes to fall head over heels with Parrish. The cancer diagnosis (the anal sac aggressive kind) was a huge disappointment for us because we wanted him to live forever. The statistics didn’t look good. 6 months? A year? We had two tiny tumors removed about 14 months apart and hoped another wouldn’t develop, but it did. Two more years went by and we couldn’t figure out why this cancer didn’t seem to affect him. But we were thrilled to still have him and he was clearly happy to be here.

Parrish’s last months were really a roller coaster. A week of really good days then a few days that were not so good. We suppose that the cancer was perhaps taking its toll somewhere. So hard to part with him but it was clearly time for him to leave us. He will remain in our hearts forever.

It's Parrish checking in. I have GReat news! I got to have the run of the house several times all by myself! I was an exceptionally good boy. Foster Mom was poppin' buttons with pride. She thinks now that I'm accustomed to the routine and I have more confidence that my foster humans will come back when they leave that my stress is reduced. I'm also on a low dose of flower essences so that helps keep my stress down, too. She's gonna leave for a whole day next week so we'll see how I do. I'm pretty sure I'll ace it. My extended foster family came over the other day and all the little humans were kissin' on me. Who can resist? Foster Mom says I've started to fill out and my coat is improving and I am one handsome boy. Even the cat wants to be near me! At the risk of sounding boastful, I guess I'm a hottie.

Other than that we've all just been hangin' out. We spend lots of time outside and I really like that. I lounge around and take in the fresh air. Every once in awhile I go over to check in with the humans, get a scratch, and go back and resume my nap. I like hangin' out with the resident dog here, too. We don't really play but I'd still say we're buds. He's teaching me all about life in Minnesota. Who knew that my dinner was really a hot dish?

If you're interested in helping me be all I can be, send an email to placementatragom [dot] org. Foster Mom says I'm oh-so-close to having recovered from my Katrina ordeal and she says she'd really like it if some wonderful forever family could experience the rewards of helping me take those last few steps.

We're working on getting Parrish to the RAGOM Education Booth at the PetCo in Burnsville on April 8th. Hope we can make it work - we'll keep you posted.

Parrish has made tremendous improvements since the last update. He will walk into his kennel with only a little encouragement on his collar instead of me pointing him in and pushing. He doesn't get as upset once he's in the kennel either. He still barks, but not right away. He is really improving on letting me know he wants outside. On occasion he will even bark at me to go out. He has had no accidents in the house for a couple of weeks. He is gaining weight and I think he is just acting altogether much happier and healthier all around. He's more playful with my other dogs and he is learning that when he needs something he comes to me and (sometimes!) I actually get it!

Parrish is SO sweet. I can't quite figure him out and what his past was like. He loves people and is totally loveable, yet he doesn't know sit, lay down, etc. He may have been totally an outside dog that didn't get much attention or a stray, but I wouldn't expect a stray to be so trusting of people. Who knows!? I'm just glad he's getting back to good health and enjoying life again!
