8/14/06 - Charlie arrived in his new foster home this afternoon. He has been very easy to have around, nuzzling everyone, following us everywhere and putting up with all sorts of loving from kids and adults alike. As you can see from the photos, he is a beautiful red color and somewhat large in size, around 75 pounds. He is estimated to be around 6 years old and seems to be very calm and easy going. According to the records that he came with, he lived on a farm previously and ran around freely. He has had some problems with ear infections and skin allergies, and is currently on medications for that. He is scheduled to be neutered tomorrow. There is also a record of his having Lyme disease, but he was treated for that and fully recovered.

We took him for a walk this evening and he fought the lead for awhile and then seemed to settle into it about 15 minutes later. He may need a little more time and work with that. While on our walk, we met a neighbor who was walking their dog and when the two dogs met, they sniffed, wagged tails and parted happily. We also had a friend stop over and ring the doorbell when they arrived, and he barked briefly but he greeted them with a tail wag and allowed them to pet him right away. He has been playing ball with our kids and having great fun running off with the ball.

One thing we've discovered that he LOVES to do is go for car rides. Often times we find him with his nose pressed to the door leading to the garage, waiting to go for a ride. So, I'd say this adorable Golden would be a perfect pet for a family with or without children. Please think it over and ask yourself if he might be the perfect forever friend for you. He really bonds quickly to people and is very lovable.

We are so sad to report the unexpected passing of our Charlie boy on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011. Even through several ear surgeries and a tooth surgery this year, we were under the impression that Charlie (Charlie Dawson #06-319) was in pretty good health. The vet said it was most likely a heart attack that took him - Charlie passed while playing outside in the first snowfall this year (he sure loved the snow!). We are so thankful that he was his happy self up until the end, that he never had to suffer through an illness, and that we never had to make the decision to put him down, but it was hard not to be able to say goodbye and give him our love.

We had 5 wonderful years with Charlie, who still acted like a puppy at age 11. Since we adopted him in 2006, we have added 2 children to the mix, which he loved and protected like his own. Charlie constantly wanted to be by our sides. His favorite pastimes included walks, playing with the kids, and of course being petted and loved. A friend told us that the hardest part about adopting and loving these goldens is saying goodbye--and this is very true--but we do not regret one bit inviting Charlie into our lives with open arms and hearts. Charlie will be in our hearts and memories forever. Here's to you, Charlie boy! We will miss you!
