Profile

4/23/06: Holly Noel is 9 years old, going on 2!! This little girl is in excellent shape and based on her energy, one would never guess that she is 9. Holly is a red colored girl with a slightly graying face weighing in at 65 pounds. Holly came from a family that had 8 children and a cat. She has been excellent with my dogs, cats and toddler too. Holly LOVES tennis balls more than life itself! The only time she has dropped that thing is to eat and drink. And even then, it?s not far from her. In fact, when she drinks, she puts her ball in the water too!! Goofy girl!!

Holly continues to hang out with us and have a good time this summer. She loves to go for walks and is a great walker…unless we stop to talk to people along the way! She isn’t naughty by any means, just excited, and it gets a bit chaotic with 3 dogs and a stroller! She loves to play fetch and will play for as long as her humans' arms can throw! The only “naughty” thing Holly does is countersurf on occasion. She doesn’t do it if I’m in the room, or even on the same floor as that matter. If I forget and leave food on the counter and go upstairs though I can count on it being gone when I get back downstairs! One day I left a pack of graham crackers on the counter. Later in the day, I noticed that Holly had this brown crust on the top of her nose, just beyond the reach of her tongue. I had no idea what it was until I discovered the graham crackers missing!!! Gee, I wonder who could have possibly eaten them?!?!

Holly made a visit to Petco in Rochester when RAGOM was there a couple of weeks ago and was perfect! Everyone that visited with her just loved her, especially her size. We ended up driving home through a pretty nasty thunderstorm and Holly did very well. Her previous owners reported that she had some mild storm anxiety. Now that we’ve had a few storms, we’ve seen it a bit, but it is very mild. She just walks around with a worried look on her face and just wants to be close to us. It has also stormed when we’ve been gone and she has not been destructive at all.

Holly did not like the fireworks one bit either, but again, wasn’t destructive. We live one mile away from campus, where the fireworks display was and needless to say, it was very loud. We turned the stereo on fairly loud and closed all the windows and doors to drown as much of the noise out as we could. The only thing Holly did was stand by the door and bark….until the fireworks were over. And then of course the neighbors had to start in with their own supplies of fireworks. Grrrr…… Our poor Jackson is terrified of the fireworks and about ripped our carpet up trying to get under our bed. Once he got under there, Holly followed him! Holly is a petite little thing and only weighs 55 pounds, while Jackson is a big dude, weighing in at 85 pounds! Jackson ended up getting stuck under the bed and we had to lift it up so he could get out.

Holly was doing so well with her seizures and was nearing the 2 week mark between seizures when she had a bad night last week. She didn’t have an actual seizure, instead she had about 8 “episodes” over about a two hour period where she would collapse on the floor and start trembling in her face, like she does in the beginning of her seizures. These episodes never turned into anything more and lasted maybe 5 seconds, then she would be right back up ready to play. So, we headed to the vet for some blood work. They checked her liver enzymes to see if she was possibly having a toxic reaction to the increased Phenobarb. dose, but that came back normal. They also did a full thyroid panel and checked her Phenobarb. level again. Her thyroid was normal but her Phenobarb. level was still very low. We’ve increased her dose again and switched her to a food with fewer ingredients (Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb & Rice). She ended up having seizures 3 nights in a row, I imagine from the stress of the Petco event and the stress of being poked and prodded at the vet. As of today, she’s been seizure free for one week. Let’s hope we can keep counting the days between seizures for this poor girl. It would be wonderful to completely eliminate them for Holly, but realistically, we’re hoping to get control and limit the seizures to one or two a month. Not bad considering she was having two a day when she came into RAGOM!

Holly continues to do very well at our house. She has completely recovered from her spay and had her stitches removed last week. She was a very good girl and didn't bother her stitches at all either! She got the go ahead to go for long walks again and we've discovered that she needs a Gentle Leader very much!! I thought she was going to pull my arm off without it! She got used to it very quickly and is now a pleasure to walk. Holly is a very active girl and needs some sort of exercise every day. Our normal walk route is about 2 miles but I think Holly could easily handle a longer walk than that. Holly also loves to play fetch and would probably play 24/7 if someone would throw the ball for her! Everyone that we've met is shocked to learn that Holly is 9 years old. She doesn't act 9 at all!!! She's got the energy level of a puppy and the benefits of a mature dog!!

Holly's second favorite thing in life is car rides. She gets very vocal (roo, roo, rooo!!!) and dances all over the place if she thinks there's even a remote chance that we're going someplace in the car! It's been cool enough for her to run errands with me and she just hangs out on my seat when I run into stores. A word of caution though...no tennis balls in the car when you're driving! She likes to flip them into hard to reach places and will do whatever it takes to get them back. Not a good thing when she flips it under my feet with the brake and gas pedals and tries to crawl under my feet to get her ball!!

We started Holly on Phenobarbitol on Friday, May 5th. She had a seizure on Saturday night and again Sunday afternoon and then didn't have one again until last night at bedtime. Yay for a seizure free week!! She will need bloodwork done in 2-3 weeks to check liver enzymes and Phenobarbitol levels to make sure she's on a therapeutic dose. I put her pill in her food morning and night and she eats it right up. Phenobarbitol is fairly cheap too, I think I paid $6 for a one month supply.

Miss Holly Belle came home with us last night. She kept her tennis ball in her mouth during the entire hour and a half ride home! She said hello to our dogs in the backyard and then came inside for a self guided tour of the house. She met each cat with nothing more than a sniff and came back to me and the dogs for her supper. She ate everything and then settled in on the floor by the couch for some loving.

Holly has some medical issues that need to be addressed. First off, she needs to be spayed. She also currently has ear infections, eye infections, a sore on her leg that’s infected and a urinary tract infection. She is on meds for all of those and handles them very well. She let me put her ear drops in without any objection (I bet it feels so good for her!) but when she saw that I had the tube of eye stuff, she went behind the couch!! Holly also has a history of seizures. Her previous family reported that she has had two seizures a day for the past 5 years or so, but has not had any testing done or been put on any meds. Holly did have a seizure last night as we were getting ready for bed. The first thing she did when she came out of it was to grab her tennis ball again! We have started a seizure log for her and will be keeping in close contact with the vet regarding her seizures. They want to see how frequent/long they are before they start her on any meds.

More to come on Holly as we get to know her better!
