Abby 06-393

Profile

9/5/06: What a nice dog! We just came back from a nice long, very enjoyable walk. Abby was so excited when she saw the leash and she is a great walker. She doesn't seem to know "heel", but doesn't pull at all and likes to extend the flexi-leash out a few feet. She is doing so well for a dog who has lived with the same family all her life and has now been uprooted. Last night she really crashed, as she must have been very worn out from her big day and new home.

Abby has a beautiful red coat with a touch of gray around her eyes. That touch of gray is the only thing that would indicate she is 7 or 8. She does not seem like a senior dog at all.

More later....

A little late on notifying RAGOM, but I have to report that we led our dear little Abby to the Rainbow Bridge on Saturday, August 17, 2013, after a wonderful 7 years with her. She was suffering from kidney failure that was diagnosed this past summer, but she stayed a "courageous, loving, trooper" until the end. Abby got to make the move of our household from Saint Michael to Ely, Minnesota, in April 2013. She enjoyed her new home in the North Woods at the End of the Road, taking us on many walks down the gravel roads, and to Garden Lake, close to home. We have to thank the staff at Ely Vet Clinic for the sympathetic care they provided for Abby, especially during her last few weeks, and on her last day.

We'll have to send a little more info to you in the near future, including photos. We feel that adopting a 7 or 8 year old dog gave us a distinctively special experience that we would not hesitate doing again. We would like others to realize how great adopting an older dog can be.

Thanks, RAGOM. We cannot thank you enough for all your wonderful work.

Abby had a great day today. She seems to be settling in nicely. She had been a little growly with young resident dog Lacy who always wants to play. Abby had also shown her confusion with her situation by barking when she thought she was being left behind and guarding the "toys". This is all understandable since she was purchased as a puppy and lived with the same family all 8 years until last Monday. It was not her choice, of course, to leave the only family she has known. Her family was unable to keep her because of an unstable neighbor who was threatening to harm Abby. But, all that is behind her now.

Today, we had "lessons". She was not fond of the Gentle Leader, but after taking that off, it felt so good that she was quite good at heeling. We also worked on sit (which she has down pat if I have a treat in my hand), and stay. She does the cutest "lie down" and really bounces into position. She did very well. To top it all off, she got to walk on the dock and go swimming, both of which she loves. She seems so much happier today and seems to have decided that she does like and trust us, so she can let her guard down and enjoy life again. It's great to see that "I like you" look in her eyes and the wag of her tail when she sees me. She still doesn't want to romp with Lacy, but likes to have her around. Barking?? Only once today.

Abby loves to have toys and balls to chew - she even nabs my shoes or socks if I leave them around - doesn't hurt them, I just find them in odd places. She'll make a good housekeeper out of me yet! She does seem to be playing a game with me though, and doesn't like to drop things, but as soon as I turn my back, it's on the floor and usually I can just pick it up. I don't enjoy the game like she does, so we will be working on that!

She is a cutie....
