Profile

12/10/06: Daniel arrived yesterday. He is a very special boy! I have had a hard time trying to put together words for his introduction. Let me try to tell his sad story (without crying).... Daniel was one of the Missouri dogs that was rescued back in October. He has spent the last two months receiving vet care. He has traveled from Missouri, to Iowa, then to Wisconsin, now to Minneapolis. Daniel arrived yesterday after having his right rear leg amputated last Wednesday. He had been shot while he was in the wild in Missouri. Poor guy. His leg was in pieces & he still had bullet fragments left in his skinny little body. He has endured a lot.

Daniel has the cutest face. He is guessed to be about 3 years old. He only weighs 35 pounds, & he needs to gain weight. He looks like a miniature Golden Retriever. He eats well. This morning he was hand fed breakfast, to learn humans are good. He loves his Vari-Kennel but also ventures out to check out the house. We had an adventurous 6 a.m. potty outing (the neighbors now have more data to certify me as nuts!). Daniel needs to learn about people, so he's not very trusting right now. He didn't want to come in. I was out in the dark, with the security light going off & on, in my robe & slippers....brrrr.....with treats in hand, trying to get an un-trusting dog to come in the door, which he did. We went back to bed & then we heard the hop, hop of Daniel. He came in the bedroom & laid on the dog bed. He wanted to be near us. Too sweet!

Daniel has come around in just 24 hours. I think whoever adopts this very special survivor needs to name him after a very special hero! He has been through so much.

The resident dogs are being very patient with him. They attempt to play, but know that Daniel needs some rest right now. No reaction or problem with the cat either. I don't think his having 3 legs instead of 4 is going to be a problem. He does great. I felt sad when it looked like he was trying to scratch himself with the leg that's gone. He's going to need a human to help him out with the scratches on his right side! I think there are some other benefits of having a dog with three legs....one less paw to wipe the mud off! Maybe a discount on nail trimming?! Maybe RAGOM will discount his adoption fee! Ha! Ha!

We will keep you posted on Daniel's amazing progress. I know he will exceed to be the perfect mini Golden. If you would be interested in having Daniel as yours, please e-mail Placementatragom [dot] org. Daniel is very special & his forever family will be just as special!

Thought it was about time to send in some new pictures of the "Amazing Daniel". He is so darn cute and has come a long way in the 3 months that he's been in foster care. He so needs the patience of a family to make him feel at home, forever. He is still sometimes shy but he is so observant. He is very smart. He watches, and on his own terms will approach and check things out. He knows the fun of toys and treats and loving, patient care.

Yesterday, he barked at dogs on the TV. It was very funny, but I am not happy with him learning barking! But it is, again, progress for Daniel! Daniel will give me kisses (when he wants!) - it is so sweet. So, we are still waiting for that perfect family for Daniel.

He needs a fenced in yard and a dog or two to play with. He's a very beautiful, loving dog, kind of low maintenance as far as running and exercise go. And, no worry about separation anxiety, destruction, house-training, etc. He just needs trusting, loving care, with patience. It might take some time at your house, but Daniel is a survivor and will come around and trust you and love you too!

Please e-mail Placementatragom [dot] org if you'd like to meet Daniel.

Daniel LOVES the snow! He has become quite the character! Daniel is a totally different dog from when he came here three weeks ago. He is spunky, happy, healthy & is a goof! He barks now, too! The pictures do not do him justice. He is adorable! My little, skinny, pathetic Daniel has come a long way. He sometimes falls over & looses his balance with excitement when playing in the yard with the other dogs, but it doesn't bother him at all! My little guy with three legs is a survivor. He is just so darn cute. We are so in love with him. He just needs the perfect family. The perfect family will be so rewarded, believe me!

Happy New Year!

We are a little late on getting an update written up on "The" Daniel. He is doing so much better, it is amazing to watch his progress. Daniel is a bit camera shy, so it's a little difficult to get some recent pictures of him. Daniel had his stitches out on the 20th of December. He did great at the vet's office. They also removed a couple of floating bone fragments. They looked very painful. His leg amputation has healed up wonderfully. He runs and plays like a "normal" dog. He is up to 39 pounds! He does love to eat. Foster mom spoils him with burger on his food, Missing Link, Acidophilus, (because of all the antibiotics), flax oil, and lots of love! Daniel is finished with his medications and all up to date and healthy! He did not enjoy his bath, but looks & smells so much nicer. He looks like a Golden Teddy Bear.

On Christmas morning we woke up to Daniel's kennel full of toys. I don't know if he put them in there, or one of the other dogs, or Santa Clause! It was very cute. He is actually playing with toys on occasion. That's a big step! He also will instigate playing with the other dogs.

We are still working on the socialization of humans with Daniel. He is coming around, but he needs a family to work with him. He is a scared little boy. I think Daniel would need to have another dog around. That's what he knows and he is more comfortable with a canine than a human being. He has great potential to be your buddy. He is so sweet and very, very, cute! Even though Daniel has been one of my most challenging foster dogs, due to his "people" issues & being a ferrel dog, he also has been one of the most easy foster dogs. He "goes with the flow" and is so mellow.

Daniel is pretty pooped tonight. He is actually snoring right now! He spent the weekend at a fellow foster home. Daniel has no problem keeping up with the activity of his buddies. I also got word that Daniel barked! That was a surprise because he has not barked here (close, but not quite). When I picked Daniel up, he actually walked to the car on leash & Gentle Leader and jumped in. Another big step! I am so proud of him.

The time has come to find Daniel his forever home. He needs a family with patience. He's not going to be your walking companion, YET. He's just learning about a leash and walks and car rides. We would like him to have a fenced in yard. And another canine companion to show him the ropes. He is fine with cats, too.

If you think you would work for Daniel & Daniel for you, please send an e-mail to Placementatragom [dot] org.

Daniel greeted me at the door tonight when I got home from work with his tail wagging (first time I've seen that) and whimpering. He actually acted like he missed me! He is doing so much better at going in and out the doors. Last night he RAN in the yard... not hopping, but actually ran! So funny! Like he's not even missing a leg! We are still hand feeding him and he has no problem with licking my hand and loving his food. It's when I try to give him affection that he cowers. Last night I picked him up and put him on the couch with me. He shook and shivered in fear, but did not leave my side. Tonight we did ear cleaning and he was so calm. He so wants human love--he just has never had it and doesn't know what it's like. He's coming around. Slowly. He is Golden, for gosh sakes!

Daniel has not had any accidents in the house. He is left free, with his kennel door open (which he loves). There is no counter surfing (he can't reach it!), no barking, no resource guarding, gets along with the cat and the cat with him, and also the resident dogs. He is so sweet and mellow.

Daniel seems to know his name. On the other hand, I have been calling him Cassidy (like in hop-a-long). He is so darn cute. Challenging, but cute!

If you are on this web site, reading the stories, and want to adopt a dog with special needs, Daniel would love a forever home, with love. He is not your "normal" rescue dog. He is more special than that!
