Duke 06-160

Profile

4/3/06: Meet Duke! He's a 1-2 year old Golden mix that was picked up as a stray in southern Minnesota. He weighed in at 58 pounds this morning at the vet but could stand to gain around 5 more. He gets along with both our resident Golden and Toy Poodle. His only reaction to our cats has been a big sniff and back to playing with our dogs. We do not know how he is around kids, but we will try to feel that out this weekend. Given his loving personality, we are not anticipating any problems.

Duke loves people. When around other dogs he wants to play non-stop, but when he is just with you he is very mellow and looks for love. He is now up to date on shots and will be getting neutered this Friday. He also has a mild eye infection and skin infection that are being treated. He came to us in need of a bath and some major grooming; he has already had a bath and brushing him out has filled our back yard with lots of hair for the neighborhood birds to use in their nests. He will also be headed to the "spa" after his neuter to get him all spiffed up.

He slept quietly last night in his crate, until our resident Golden woke him up. We have had a couple accidents, but hopefully those are due to all the excitement of being in a new place.

Duke will need a family who is committed to obedience training to help him become the best dog he can be. He does not know any commands and it appears he has never lived inside before. He has scabs on his neck from a shock collar and is timid with new experiences. He does not know what treats and toys are. If Duke is the only dog in his household, he will need a lot of opportunity to socialize with other dogs (obedience classes would be great for this!) so that they can help him learn all of the perks of the good life with a loving family!

Duke is too busy to sit still and pose for photos -- we will try and get some more of him this weekend!

If you are interested in adopting Duke and are an approved adoptive family, please email Placementatragom [dot] org. If you are not approved ? send in an application so we can get Duke into your home.

Hey everyone -- Duke here! I've been having a good time here in foster care, but I'd really like a family to call my own. We have been spending a lot of time outside in this nice weather and my foster brother and I just love to wrestle and chase the squirrels. Do need a squirrel chaser? I'm your man! I promise to keep the yard squirrel-free.

I really love the individual attention that I get during my clicker training. I would love to go to clicker classes with my new family. I also take my treats without a fuss now. Foster mom puts them in semi-melted cheese. She really thinks that she is pulling a fast one on me with that trick. I know exactly what's she's doing, but I have learned that I LOVE CHEESE, so I don't put up a fuss about the pills in the middle.

Foster mom just said something about dinner. Yum, dinner! Gotta go!

A few people have commented that Duke sure looks like a full Golden Retriever -- so I took a picture of his bushy tail, the only thing which hints that he might have something else in him. I actually think his tail is cute. Otherwise, he looks just like any other dark red, curly Golden. What ever his heritage, his heart is pure Gold.

Today we did some work in the backyard with clicker training. Duke caught on in no time and I had him doing doggy push-ups (sit-lay-sit-lay-sit-lay very quickly). Our golden is absolutely terrified of the clicker, so this training also meant some quality one-on-one time for Duke and I. He seems to really enjoy this individual attention. This also means that when you adopt Duke you will get one free clicker!

Oh! and I almost forgot that Duke has figured out fetch!!! It is really rewarding to watch Duke discover all the small joys of the good life.

Hi all - Duke here! I wanted tell everyone about my great progress... I've learned how to sit, I know my name and I come when called. Now I'm working on learning "lay." I've also learned what "no" means - my foster parents say that is very helpful for them! Whatever -- it mostly means the end of something fun for me, but I'm learning quickly that behaving in the house gets me lots of love. I am a quick study. I will now take treats -- wow! I have really been missing out on the good stuff by passing those up for the first few days! I'm also doing really well on the housetraining...we go outside regularly and I'm not having accidents in the house anymore. Foster mom says I've learned my RAGOM-assigned-name much faster than any of her other fosters who were strays. She also says that I remind her a lot of the resident former-RAGOM dog -- a real diamond in the rough. He was also a stray with no house manners when he was rescued and now he is the BEST DOG EVER!! (Do you think she's a little biased?) I am just waiting to be the BEST DOG EVER for my very own family -- just email Placementatragom [dot] org and they will put you in contact with my foster mom!

Duke is back from his neuter and I think it made him smarter! ;)

We picked him up yesterday morning and went to the RAGOM PetCo event where he got to greet all kinds of people and get lots of love. He was very good with all of the kids there - he met and received pets from kids 3 years old and up. We also learned "sit" at Petco and he will now take boiled chicken and moist dog food as treats. He will also come to a whistle and is starting to learn his name. We have not had any accidents in the house since he got back. By watching our Golden he has figured out that balls are fun. He will chase them, but not retrieve yet. However if you hand him a ball, he will carry it around in his mouth and toss it around himself. It's only a matter of time before he figures out the whole game.

Duke will be making an appearance at the Burnsville PetCo on Saturday, April 8th. Since he is being neutered on Friday, we will probably not stay for the whole event. We plan to be there at 11 am and stay as long as he can handle with his recovery -- I'm sure he will be looking for lots of sympathy pets!
