Hi, Smiley is doing very well at our house. We have found that he likes walks, playing with our dog Marty which includes rolling, chasing, wrestling and coveting and collecting toys.
Smiley loves anything that is out of doors and would make a great jogging partner. Other outdoor activities he loves include swimming, chashing and collecting balls, helping with the barn cleaning and just hanging out.
Inside the house he is absolutely trustworthy and has never messed with any of our things or food - ever. He sleeps in our bedroom and will join you on the bed for play time if invited. "Off" gets him off the bed right away. He doesn't jump on the bed but gently steps up.
Smiley "gives" the tennis ball very easily. He is very soft with his mouth. Squeeky toys are a special obsession. They have to be pretty sturdy or they won't last long. Soft toys aren't applicable. He likes rawhide chewies and we give him a soup bone on occasion. Smiley is absolutely not possessive about any of his things or items he collects from his dog friends. Marty routinely walks up to Smiley and takes a special toy from his mouth.
Riding in the car is a joy for Smiley although he is smart enough to retract his head when the car gets up to about 40 mph.
Smiley is beautiful, loving, and tender not to mention handsome. He is very special to me. He was surrendered because the owner wanted him to hunt and Smiley does not want to. The previous owner did not say what that meant, so I don't know if it is about gun shots, smelly birds, the dicipline or what... Just don't know.
Smiley has dandruff - you've all seen the dandruff commercials.... The dandruff should be treatable and I am working on that now. He does not have mites or any other dandruff causing critters. It could be an allergy or dry skin. We are doing special shampoos to loosen dandruff and soothe his skin, giving supplements and switching to a dog food for sensitive skin. He does not scratch and has no lesions, so all should be fine in a few months. Smiley may also be a Golden who develops hypoglycemia (very common in Goldens), and this would need to be monitored. If he does become hypoglycemic, treatment is easy, cheap and he will still lead a long happy life.
Marty & Smiley at rest
Smiley smiling :)
