John 05-109

Profile

John is an older male Golden and we aren't quite sure of his exact age. The vet thinks he is about 10 years old. He is a stray, and was in a little rough shape when he was finally turned in. The shelter that took him in neutered him, updated him on his shots, and gave him a nice warm bath to clean and fluff him. He turned out to be very handsome afterwards.

He also had a cyst removed from his elbow, and has several stitches that will eventually be removed. So far, my main concern is fattening him up. He is too skinny, but some love and comfort food will hopefully take care of that. He isn't much interested in eating, but a little chicken soup broth over his dog food sparked new interest today and he ate a good portion.

He has a lump (cyst) on his tail, but the vet checked that and decided to leave it. When the hair grows back, you won't even notice it. Right now, John likes to talk a lot, and barks sometimes for no reason. His voice is very raspy, because he is older, so it's not very loud. The vet also thinks John has problems seeing in dim lit areas, but I haven't noticed any problems in that arena. He was also diagnosed as HOH (hard of hearing). So far, he doesn't seem to hear much at all, but it could be selective hearing too. Squeaky toys and yelling loudly doesn't capture his attention at all, however loud clapping did make him jump and look. Today, when I came home from work, he was fast asleep, and even though my 1 year old was going nuts at my arrival home, John didn't budge until I made vibrations on the floor to awaken him. Noise didn't disturb him at all, so I think his hearing loss is more than less. He is also missing part of one ear, but it's just a little shorter when you look at him straight on. Adds character!

Now for his personality. Right now John is a little shy. He doesn't like to make eye contact, and hangs his head sometimes. He does like attention though, and asks for more when you pet him. His favorite thing is his new found girlfriend, my resident dog Sadie. He simply thinks she's the berries. He does quite a prance in the back yard (bouncy walk) and pushes his chest out showing her how handsome he is. He follows her around, and gives her neck hugs (drool and all). He also likes to try and mount her (even though he's fixed) but can't really do much because he's not very agile, but he gets an "e" for effort. He can't go up the stairs very fast either, but he makes it just fine.

So far he is fully house trained and there is no need to kennel him. He did like to sleep in the kennel though. No chewing or bad habits yet (except the raspy barking). He has been panting a lot, but that is just because of all the change. He will settle down just fine after a few more days. I also think more of his personality will shine through as he mends from all the change.

John has the classic white face that goes with so many of the Senior Goldens. He would make a wonderful mellow pet to a family that would want a lower energy dog offering much love and bittersweet devotion.

John hit a bit of a rough patch this past week and has not been feeling that well. We have been feeding him chicken and rice, as the main problem has been getting him on a consistent eating schedule. Good news is that he gets his stitches out soon, and the tail has healed up real nice.

He is done with most of his medications, and will get his eye checked again to see if we need to continue the dry eye drops. We will keep him on the Cosequin for the arthritis. The dose will eventually be one pill a day. Not a big deal at all.

John is on the mend still, and is recovering from all the vetting we've done in the last 4 weeks. I'm sure as more time passes he'll get more bounce back in his step. We can already see a difference in the last 2 days as he has picked up his trot speed, and even brought the tennis ball to me. Come visit John at the Petco event in Eagan this weekend! He'll be out and about and would love to see you!!

John has been with us a week now, and we know more about his personality. He is a very laid back fellow. He likes walks, and we keep them shorter because he has old bones and likes to take it easy. He isn't barking nearly as much, and it seems to be an attention getting mechanism only.

John loves men. He met a nice man on a walk, and he went up and leaned into his chest and pushed his whole body and head in for a hug. He didn't do this with me until I had him a few days.

As far as playing, my girl has tried to get him to tug and wrestle, and he is not interested in it at all. She also went for a swim, and he stood on the beach and didn't even get his toes wet. He also doesn't really care for the tennis ball, but that is okay because he likes to watch.

We are working on potty training, as he has had a couple accidents. He did go one whole day (9 hours) while I was at work with no potty at all so we know it's possible. He certainly doesn't need to be kenneled either. He also takes no mind of the cats whatsoever.

Clapping works to get his attention, with his hearing loss. Full body hugs and ruffling his hair work with praising on the potty training (he really knows you are praising) I am using a come here gesture to get him to come as well.

We are going back to the vet this week and will ask for something to relieve his arthritis, as he seems to be a bit stiff when lowering himself to lay down, and also getting up. He also needs help getting up on the bed, but loves sleeping there. He asks to come up.

John is very loving and would make such an awesome pet. He is a beautiful rich deep red, almost an Irish Setter color (but he is Golden Retriever). He has the white face that breaks your heart and makes you just want to walk up to him and shower him with affection. Everyone has been drawn to him.

This boy is ready for his forever home. He is so low maintenance he would be a real treasure to the right family. With his age comes an intense sweetness. Wouldn't you like some of that sugar?
