12/24/05: Casey arrived in St. Cloud the same day we got back from vacation!! Wow, we all had a long trip that day. Casey is a sweetheart with people and cats. She is not happy being around other dogs. I am hoping we can work on this and come to understand her issues. She's had a tough go of it as she has a "bum" hind leg - she limps somewhat but does just fine and can even run a bit. We should all be so good as to adapt as these furr butts do. Her tongue is a bit deformed, rather rough, from eating thistle :( Casey's teeth need a good cleaning and hopefully it will help her to get off the moist only food and on some good solid dry food. For now I'm soaking small bite size pieces of dry in hot water and then adding the moist. She is now eating a bit better. She will be going to the vet on Monday for her check up and get updated on her shots etc. She is a very loving girl with us humans, loves to cuddle and just be loved up. She is a beautiful golden color with eyes that look like they have "eyeliner" on. For now we are taking things day by day and as we make progress I'll let you know. Meanwhile we hope you all have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season.

Casey is so special and after over 8 months of foster care, has found her Forever Golden Family & Home.

I do know that I would do it again, all of it, good, bad, horrible, funny, sweet...all of it with Ms Casey. As I said, I had to keep faith there was someone out there that would want, love and accept a 3 legged dog, who loves humans and is dog to dog aggressive. And there was.....and they are the greatest, most loving and funny family. Casey could not ask for more....5 sets of hands, 11 acres, walks, rides in the van and watching 3 cats try to figure out who she is and why she is ignoring them:)

Saturday the family came to St Cloud to meet Casey. The agreement was we'd meet, then if I felt it was ok, we'd go to their home on Sunday. I was so torn.....wanting them to be a family for Casey and not wanting her to go. But within 5 minutes of meeting the family I knew in my heart they were IT!!

Sunday was a tough drive down to the Metro to bring Casey to her new home. But she loved the grounds....TM says she now can be the "farm dog" and sit on the hill and purvey her kingdom. The house is open and airy and has low windows of which Casey ran from window to window to look out...for those pesky squirrels and gophers. The front door has double glass doors.....her tail was a thumping when she saw that. We conducted the business and then it hit me....I was leaving my baby....and the tears came. But it was time to leave. Reba was ready to stay and Casey followed TM to the door. But we took our pics and said our good byes and I left knowing in my heart this was where she belonged and she would be loved, cared for and accepted for who she was.

Casey is settling in and has been for a ride to drop Kevin off for practice, one of many I'm sure, and then a walk in the woods at a near by park. She could only do 20 minutes and was tired, but she will build her strength up....along with her new mom's. She was introduced to the fire pit and settled in for a little rest and a nap. The family is so awesome and has sent me updates and pics everyday. I have been invited to come visit whenever, but I know I must give Casey time to bond with her family and adjust to her new life. But then look out......I'll be back!!

I would also like to thank some special people who have helped Casey and me over the long months. First, Donita for rescuing her and the transporters for getting her to us. To Dr Nancy A and her wonderful staff for all the care. To Dr Cal for cutting his fee in half to perform Casey's amputation. To Con, Konnie, Tamra, Linda and Tom C. who helped Casey make some giant steps the week he cared for her while we were gone. All have been there for me, through the good and bad, tears and laughter. And to The Man who's name is .........well, that wouldn't be any fun to say it now:) He was my rock during the difficult times with Casey and my comfort when we said good bye to Casey. Without all these people and more, I could never have hung on. For all the fosters who helped me through the rough times with advice, I thank you. And no matter what TM says, he'll miss Ms Casey!! After all, on Sunday when we left Casey, he drove me to Maple Grove PetCo to look at cats, then to Buffalo to look at cats and finally home by 6 pm Sunday night. I needed to be busy......and he hauled me around to help me get through the day.

Amelia Erhardt wrote......."courage is the price life exacts for peace.......". Casey had the courage to bear her pain, learn, trust, accept and be the best she could with what she had. She deserves that peace that life has to offer. Casey, I will always love you. You taught me much, gave me more.....more tears, grief, anger, laughter, lessons in life and loyalty of which I have never known from another dog. You have left me the knowledge that to persevere and never give up or in brings rewards, such as you succeeding in many areas and finally finding your forever Golden family. Tonight I write my last update about you, my Golden Bear, and put your file away marked "Adopted"................with tear stains of joy for you and your new life. I love you. Mom

We're all back home!! Casey had a wonderful time at Uncle Tom's Ye Olde Dude Ranch. She got to play with Bud/Odie 06-328 before Bud moved on to a new foster. Too bad he couldn't have stayed, as the two of them seemed to have great fun together. In the end Casey and Lincoln Buddy (LB) made nice... thanks to Tom. Casey was sleeping by LB, eating by LB and jumping the low rail on the ramp in the back with LB!! Go Girl!! She sure was a different girl when TM and I arrived to pick her up on Saturday evening--well-behaved, no barking... I'm sure you get the picture. :)

Soon it was time to load up her gear and head for the next pick up point to get resident Reba. I wondered how it would be after being separated for over a week. Casey was so excited to see Reba--so much so we had a hard time getting Casey to wait til Reba got in the car. True to form, Casey snuggled right up to Reba for the ride home. So the dogs got their mini vacation and we got to work in Texas. :( I need a real vacation now. But thanks to Tom and LB for having Casey as guest for the week.

While in Texas I was notified that there was a family interested in MS Casey!!! I managed to speak with one of the family members on the way to the DFW airport as we were leaving for home. We chatted and I asked if she had any questions... Yep, just one. Oh boy, here it comes. This is it. They wanted to know if Casey could do stairs? Not only can she do them, you have to watch cuz every now and then because she may try to jump one. :)

As I said before, I had to believe there was a family out there that wanted a three-legged, human-loving, somewhat dog-on-dog aggressive dog... and I hopefully will be proved right next weekend. After talking with the family member, I had a "good feeling", so of course cried all the way to the airport, while we dropped off the car at the rental place and on the bus to the airport. Pretty emotional time thinking of Casey leaving us, but I have always known she deserved her own family and life, and if this works out she will have it ALL! So stayed tuned. Guess someone felt bad for me, 'cause we bumped up to first class at no charge for the ride home. Made the pain bearable. :)

Will let ya know how next week's visit goes with the family. The family will be coming to visit on Saturday, and Casey, Reba and I will be going down to visit on Sunday at their home. So will see how it all turns out. Keep Ms Casey in your thoughts for a match for her and the family.

What can I say about my amazing Casey that hasn't already been said...give me a minute and I'll come up with something :)

Finn 06-148 arrived Thursday morning and imagine my surprise to come home and find all 3 dogs on the deck (with TM and transporter) and Casey not trying to eat Finn!!! We left the muzzle on about a half day and realized Casey was fine with the hyper little boy. The first few times she gave low warning growls and Finn sorta listened. Then he got braver and when he wasn't bugging Reba, he would go to Casey...the first time she gave him an outright loud bark, he laid his ears back and went running. He is long since over that. She is very good with him and at times even tries to play with him. He's just so, so....a puppy. The only time Casey puts her foot down is when she and I are on the couch and Finn insists on coming over and getting in her face...then Casey gives the snap/growl/bark "I mean business".........and Finn backs off. Right now the two of them are side by side on the floor as I type this. I think Casey got tired just watching Finn race around, chew on toys, squeek the heck out of a new squeeky bone...well, you get the picture.

Casey is so happy to be able to go back out in the field and exercise. She is quite tired when we get back (wish I could say the same for someone else :) and goes right to the pool....thus the 3 dogs in the pool pic. She is slowly building up her strength in her back leg, but you can tell when she gets tired, as she will slide and either sit or lay down. But overall the adjustment has been amazing. People just can't believe it's only been a few weeks.

I have also figured out that when other "guests" are here she gets pouty and doesn't want to eat or come right away, etc. The day Taylor was adopted and left, old Casey's appetite came right back and she's been happy-go-lucky ever since. Even with the puppy here, she's fine, eating again and enjoying the great out doors. Still guarding the bird houses and keeping an eye out for that pesty chipmunk that continues to make a fool of her by getting by her.

Four of the neighborhood boys were over the other night and were so excited to see Finn, and Reba is not bashful about sticking her nose, or whole body for that matter, into the mix to get her attention. Casey just went and sat off to the side. One of the boys noticed her just sitting there and went over to her....the tail started to thump and once she felt included she was right there in the mix of things. The boys are so good with her and she with them. But then, she's always been gentle with kids of all ages. My little 5 year old dog tester who moved across town could get Casey to do anything and was never afraid of her. She is as kid tested as they come.

Well, til next time.

Well, if you read all the updates etc., some of these pics will be ones you see on the site for Taylor 06-323, but when you live together, you get your pictures taken together.

I'm sooooo HAPPY to report that after a "girls' conference" the other night, things are going very well here. Taylor has settled down and in. Casey has accepted her to the point of being in the same room together, outside together, sitting side by side for meatball treats, and even laying on the couch with me and Taylor. I would never leave them in the house together and just leave. Since Taylor is happy in the big crate, then Casey is free to be loose. They all sleep in the bedroom together with no problem. Casey still wears her e-cone so she won't lick her incision, but when we are home, it's off. Once in awhile she'll give a little growl, but Taylor walks away. I have let them BOTH know their nastiness (is that a word?) is not acceptable and so far it's working. They can even go outside and bark at the same things :) I am just so proud of Casey and how far she has come. I don't think she thinks she is being submissive...just the bigger "person"!! Taylor doesn't seem to care, so if Casey is happy, then we ALL are happy :)

There aren't too many things that can happen to embarrass me, but Casey managed to put me in a situation that did. Picture this: we live on an acre with a dead end street on the side of our garage. Behind us is 40 acres (where we take our walks). Because of road stuff they had to create a "road" out behind our property in the field for people to get to their houses. So....it's morning and I'm living in what I feel is the "country" per se. There I am, out on the deck with Reba, Casey and Taylor 06-323.....in my "old lady night gown" as TM calls it. Reba is on the grass, Taylor has just been tethered and I look at Casey and thought what the heck...she's fine to just go down and go potty. Yeah, well, NOT! All 3 dogs are on the grass doing business, me in my nightie picking up doggie doo when lo and behold what should appear? A big white pickup coming down the "dirt road"......and there goes my 3 legged wonder girl....chasing the pickup along our grass line....he turns right on the side street and there goes Casey. He stops, rolls down his window and watches Casey running laps around his truck wanting to get in....I'm sure of it. Meanwhile there I am......in just my nightie (cough cough, get the gist?) and oh yeah, black sandals!!! Finally got Casey on the grass...looked at the guy, who by now knows I need more exercise .......wink wink....and all I can do is look at him, say thanks...who would've thought a 3 legged dog could out run me. I know he was holding back.....he just smiled and drove on. I would dare say at coffee break or lunch he had one heck of a story to tell......."about the old lady on the corner with the dogs....who runs around in her nightie.....". So the lessons for the day were: 1. Casey can and will chase trucks...often wondered about that...AND 2. Always dress for the back yard!!! And just so you all know, I never leave Casey off a tie of some kind...it was a one-time thing....I swear!!!

So there it is. Casey is healing, eating well enough for now, sharing her mom and dad with Taylor, and just enjoying life as much as she can while recovering. I feel like a light bulb went on when I realized she can behave herself when it is expected of her. She is a very loving dog and is such a wonderful companion......and now seeing how well she can do with Taylor...I feel great...people need to understand how far she has come and how wonderful she is. But then, after 6 months of her physical problems, surgeries etc., I think as the pain subsides and she improves on her 3 legs, things will only get better. There is nothing I can say more about her....if you ever talked to people who have met her they just love her...can't even imagine her being nasty or dog aggressive. I believe when the time is right, Casey's forever family will come for her and maybe even have a sibling for her....or not. Meanwhile we'll just be hanging out. But we will be going on a business trip and then vacation and Casey will be staying in the Metro area with another foster. The story updates there ought to be great...you will see. Yes, mom and dad are gonna leave their girls.......but then TX has internet, as does China. So, all in all, Casey my big blonde bear is doing GREAT!!! And when I look over the past 6 months of updates.....wow, what a roller coaster...but it has been worth the ride to see her get to this place!!!

The AMAZING Casey is home!! As you can see by the pics she's doing very well. When I arrived to pick her up, she was standing in her kennel, and when she saw me the old tail swung into action. A few minutes' wait to get the IV out... and then it was hang on to your hat, Casey was trying to run out the door. Got to the Doggie Mobile, slid open the door, turned to help Casey in... yeah, well, Ms. Casey jumped in by herself and planted herself in the back, thank you very much. Got home, went to help her, aah that would be a "no, I'll do it myself" from the old girl. Outside to pee, inside to eat, outside to poop, little grass time, back in for some meds in moist food and now a nap. Whew......

Casey is doing well. I'm happy happy happy she's able to walk and was able to come home. I'm not sure how I feel about changing the dressing for the next three days, but will try. I can always take her in and have it done.

For now all is right with the world. Short happy update... lotza picture. Isn't it amazing what they can do? She is going up and down the carpeted stairs and literally trots around out side. They said to keep her quiet. How's that again... quiet? Will baby gate her in the kitchen tomorrow so she can keep an eye on the pesty and bold little chipmunk that comes up on the deck to drink water out the dog bowl that is right outside the kitchen sliders. Hey, it will keep Casey happy guarding the bird feeders from a different vantage point.

Hugs from Casey and crew. :)

I realize this a lot of pictures, but I wanted everyone to see how Casey enjoyed her last evening with four legs to run and play with. We went for a long walk in the field, she sniffed, dug and ran. Totally enjoyed her romp. When we got back on the deck I had forgot I had emptied the pool. As you can tell by the look she wasn't happy, so a quick flip for some water and all was well again.

Casey had her surgery this a.m. and it went very fast. I was surprised when the surgeon called and said all went well, she was doing good and it will be very cosmetic. Whew, was really worried about that:) NOT!! The time at work seemed to drag by but it was finally safe to head for the vet's office. I went back to see my baby and her kennel was empty... they had her outside!! We were on our way out to see her when they were coming in. Oh how sad... I would not have recognized her had I not known it was her. The short hair, head down... just so heart wrentching. She had decided to stop, and the girls, who had a little towel like thing under her belly to help her walk, looked upm and I said, "Hi Casey baby, can you come see mom?" She actually wagged her tail and took a couple steps. We got her back in the main area and she just wanted to sit down. So there we sat and she sorta perked up and watched all the staff doing their thing.

Eventually it was time to go back to the kennel--she needed to get back on her IV with the pain meds. We went to use the "towel" to help her up and she tried to do it herself which made the incision ooze. Then it was more a job of sliding her back and helping her into her kennel. When I went to back up so they could reconnect the IV she tried to get out, so I stayed a bit longer 'til she was ready to nap and soon her food would be coming.

Knowing she is in good hands and will be on pain meds made it a bit easier to leave. She will stay until late tomorrow afternoon as Dr. Nancy likes them to stay late and I have to go to the Cities. But I will be back in time to get her prescription before I pick her up. She will remain on antibiotics for another week as well as the Rimadyl and another one that is just for pain.

The big question is whether I can handle her by myself as The Man is out of town until Fri. evening. So if she isn't able to hobble enough with just me, she'll have to stay one more day. The surgeon said by tomorrow she will be trying to get up. OK! The incision will continue to "ooze" for a few more days so poor Casey will have to sleep on her big corduroy doggie bed in the kitchen. This won't go over well with Josie 06-116 since she took sleeping rights to it a few weeks ago. :)

I have been assured by so many people that once the leg is gone and the pain subsides they are much happier. I hope so... maybe it will improve her 'tude to other dogs. :)

Someone asked me if I thought Casey would ever find her Forever Home. I simply said yes. There is someone out there that would love a three-legged dog who has some dog-on-dog aggression issues but LOVES people!! There is someone for every dog--it's just that sometimes they don't know that dog is it... yet. :) They just looked at me. Hey, ya gotta keep the faith, Baby!!! So just watch my girl rise to the challenge, meet it and go on with life with all the zest and gusto she always has had.

Meanwhile it will be slow going here, so the updates may be a bit shorter and further between--OK, further between but we all know not very short. :)

Thanks to everyone who sent well wishes and good karma Casey's way. Your support has been awesome, but then that's what all the people in RAGOM are... AWESOME!!

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Cal the surgeon and my vet, Dr. Nancy and all her staff who take such great care of my old girl, Reba, and all the RAGOM furr butts I bring to them. You are all wonderful. Thank you so much for you compassion and care.

Hugs from Casey and the rest of the crew!!

Finally some lake/swimming pics. I think the pictures sum up Casey's time at the lake. With the impending surgery we wanted her to have one more time to enjoy the lake. What a natural. :)

Saturday, July 15, 2006

Casey is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday the 18th of July. So in preparation I had her relieved of much of her beautiful coat:( I didn't want her totally shaved, and so managed have someone leave a bit on. She seems very happy with her "cool" new look. I haven't had the heart to tell her I miss her long blonde locks. Hopefully, she will enjoy the warm weather a bit more as she likes to be outside guarding the bird feeder, and this should keep her a bit cooler. The pile of hair that was left was unbelieveable. Silly me, I haven't had the heart to throw it out yet. Course when The Man sees the pile left on the floor yet today that may change:)

We are planning taking the canine unit to the lake today...maybe even tomorrow, so will remember my camera this time for the water/beach pics.

Meanwhile keep Casey in your thoughts for her surgery come Tues.

OK, I know I just sent in an update, but this is just so cool. We all went for a long walk around the field, Casey got to do some digging and exploring, Josie 06-116 some running and Reba just mosied at her pace. When we got back up on the deck Reba headed right for the pool and of course laid down. Casey has NEVER gotten in the pool...drank out of it yes, but never gotten in it. Well, Casey wandered over and watched Reba in the pool. Reba got out and Casey put her front paws in....then walked in and laid down!!! This is a FIRST!!! She was so content. Eventually got out and shook off and then she just stood around watching Reba play with a squeaky toy trying to figure out what the big deal was. Eventually they decided it was to come in and eat. I know it may not seem like much, but to know she likes the water is so exciting and knowing now she'll know where to go to cool off.

Sorry, just bragging about my girls again :)

Casey is doing well...as you can tell by the pictures. We had one of Josie's pups for a visit from Wednesday til Saturday evening (Finn aka Dierks). Casey was good with him, but we always kept the muzzle on while around him as he is a pup and as such can irritate her.

Casey loves her walks in the field in the evening, no matter how warm. However, we have discovered they have to be a bit shorter as it does seem to hurt her foot. We are going in for a check up this coming week to see if there is anything else we can do to help her leg/foot. But with the exercise she is a much happier girl.

AS you can tell by the pictures we are allowing her freedom from the muzzle when with us and she has done exceptionally well. We expect her to behave and be part of the pack around here and she is responding to our expectations. She has, however, latched on to Gene (aka The Man) and whenever he is around, Casey will be next to him. Today they are out gardening. When he comes up on the deck for a break, so does Casey. Gene says she is like a puppy....lays on his feet, follows him around, etc. Well, he took on the Alpha role and she's following. You can sense a calmness about her, better behavior, etc. As time goes on she will start to be introduced to more new people, places and be in situations to meet/see other dogs. Meanwhile she is living life, enjoying the outdoors and bonding with THE MAN :)

As for me and Casey, she's still my girl, even if she has gone over to the dark side. We let her choose where she wants to sleep....it's still 50/50 by who it is, and that's ok. Slowly but surely she will be put in situations where we will have control and see how she does.

Nothing new and exciting per se, but every day is a new day with new possibilities......and the chance to succeed yet again in the day. What more can we ask of Casey..........or, for that matter, ourselves?

Friday, April 28, 2006

Sorry for not updating lately. As you can tell by Casey's pictures, puppies are still a big part of her day to day. I watch her and wonder if she ever was a mom....no history on it. Casey has been good at home as usual, but last Saturday with a lot of company coming and going I think it was a bit much. A couple brought along their senior dog Bailey to visit, and being he's over 11 I figured all would be well. Long story short she was not a nice hostess. People are always amazed at how beautiful she is, how loving etc., but when she gets nasty with another dog....well she's not a happy girl. I have gone to a dog on dog aggression class and picked up a couple things. At this point I think I will have her evaluated and see what I can do to help her overcome her fear/insecurities...whatever it is that sets her off. Meanwhile we continue to try to expose her to different situations and other animals. This girl needs the right home, family and training.....and I know when the time is right they will find Casey.

I am looking to see about a "hunting" boot for her bad foot, as walking too much causes the pad to bleed and of course she limps more. Hopefully, once things get settled in here I can go back to working on Casey's issues and get that boot so we can walk more. I wish I could say I have discovered a magic cure for all that ails Casey, but I can't. She will be with us until the right family/person comes along and we'll continue to love her and work with her. The sad thing is that if you ever met her....you'd fall in love with this big Golden bear of a girl. But until then, we'll all be hanging out with Josie and the babies.

As you can see, Casey is still enamored with the puppies. They are more fun to watch as they now "walk" around and "talk". She is still gentle around them and good to Josie. My brother was up for the weekend, which meant "cousin Bruno" the 8 month old German Shepherd was here too. Casey and Bruno will play and play, which is good as they are both ready for naps and then a good night sleep.

Casey is enjoying the nice weather and since we have no bugs (ok, the ones that count) I can leave the deck door open and the dogs wander in and out. The birds are back and so that is amusement in itself to watch and listen to them. Meanwhile life goes on and Casey continues to be a part of our family and I love watching her interact with the kids that come and some of the dogs. Still protective of her turf....yet when off leash outside she doesn't seem to have quite so many issues. I am going to a class the end of the month for dog on dog aggression. As I have said, I hope to be able to learn something to help her overcome it. We are working on the barking "jags" and with the doors and windows open and being out, it's more important than ever to get her to understand that to bark at someone, another dog or even a vehicle is fine, but there is a point you have to stop vocalizing your feelings on them all. It ought to be fun next Saturday when the families come to meet the puppies and there are kids here....she loves kids so we'll see how it all goes.

Meanwhile, if you've read my updates over the last couple months, you know there's always a little adventure with her, yet many things have settled down lately. Casey will always be Casey, baggage and all and I know the perfect family is out there waiting for her and willing to go thru obedience training with her to help her become the best girl she can. So if you're that family, please email Placementatragom [dot] org.

Friday, April 7, 2006

As you can see by the pics, Casey is enamored with the puppies. When the door is closed to Josie's room and the puppies are crying, Casey will stand outside the door and whine and then bark. If the door is left open just a little, she will poke her head thru and eventually make her way in. She just wants to be by the puppies. She doesn't lick them or nudge them...in fact, she is rather afraid of them. Go figure! Josie is being patient over all, but will give a low growl and I am always sitting with her, so I tell her it's ok and then Casey just walks around and sniffs. Once these babies are moving I think she will find them to be new playmates, providing Josie allows it.

Casey enjoys seeing cousin Bruno and they play and play. The spring-like weather calls to Casey and she likes nothing better than laying on the deck or in the grass and feeling the wind in her coat and the sun warming her body. She loves to go for her walks and you don't need to ask twice if she wants to go for a ride. She is ever the vigilant watch dog and will let you know if anyone is near the property.....but let the door bell ring and she is unaware of what it means until I go to the door. She loves the kids...well any human for that matter. Again, I wish we had a fence as she would so love to be out enjoying the day or night. She has her little limp going on with her rear left leg/foot and that will always be there, but she can run and play with the best of them.

She has decided that come bedtime if I don't invite her up once I've settled in, she will come to the side of the bed and stare at me and then up comes the paw.....so of course I now say OK and up she jumps. She likes about 5 minutes of one-on-one petting and talking and then she is fine. Will stretch out, roll over on her back, all 4 legs in the air and drift off to la la land. Most mornings she is still there and if she feels me move she comes over for morning kisses. Once I get up she is off the bed and ready to start the day :)

She has been spoiled with too many different goodies on her food and so am trying to wean her and Reba off and back to dry food with an occasional goodie treat. She's not happy, but will catch on when she is hungry. Well, I think it's time to crawl up on the couch and share some cuddle time with Casey. Can't you just imagine cuddling with this old Golden bear of a girl and getting lots of love and affection for free? If you can, email Placementatragom [dot] org - we'll be waiting.

Casey enjoyed her brushing and manicure today. She will lay there for hours and let you brush her....then roll over and let you do her tummy. I clipped her 2 nails on her back left foot....she was fine. She will always have a bit of a limp since the damage to the foot and leg, but when she wants to get going she's fine. I think some things bother her foot more than others, but overall the surgery and healing were very successful.

I look at this beautiful girl and see only a sweetness for humans that is the embodiment of a Golden. The dog to dog reactive situation can be dealt with thru training. Up until now I just haven't felt the timing was right. With the warmer weather coming we will be able to get out more. I'm proud of her and how she is with Josie. Josie can get growly with both her and Reba.....Casey may give a little growl back but she lets it go at that. What a good girl. I am thinking perhaps my in depth reports on Casey and her "issues" have scared some people away. That is really too bad because she is a beautiful dog, very good with kids, even as big as she is, loves people....I mean she would cuddle with you all day if possible. She walks so nicely on her Gentle Leader. She is protective of the house and yard.....and will let ya know if she sees anyone she doesn't feel should be there. When the kids come whipping down the side street and head for the field she lets them know she doesn't like it, but if given the opportunity I think she'd go running along with them. I think a bit of the "farm dog" will always be with her and there is nothing wrong with that. If you even think you might want to meet her....do it. There is no description that can do this girl justice, she is just looking for a home, her own family and the chance to give you all the love she has....in exchange, a little training will help all of you. One day someone will look at her picture and just know she's right and when they adopt her and write in how wonderful she is....many of you will be sorry :) Meanwhile we continue to love her and enjoy her....issues and all. After all, how many of us don't have issues? And when you came to RAGOM, wasn't it to love and adopt a throw away or give away dog?

I have been remiss in picture taking and sending any kind of update. Still trying to get back in the grind I guess. So not very exciting pictures this go round. Casey is doing very well overall. We went to PetCo Sat. just to get treats and be out and see how she is doing w/other dogs she meets. There weren't a lot of dogs there, but 2 guys were up front with their dogs. She didn't care to have anything to do with them, unlike Reba who was right there meeting the world. We walked past the dogs a couple of times and nary a growl...just ignored them more or less. But let there be a person look her way and she is all smiles, tail going 90 mph.

She is running and romping outside. When she first gets up in the morning she is a bit stiff and favors her back leg. But soon she's shaken it off and is ready to go out and romp and roll in the snow....or what's left of it. She still, on occasion, will invite Reba to play. They get along without any problems and have even both gotten up on the bed for a little cuddle time before they hit their respective doggie beds. Casey has decided that if I don't get up on her time, the best thing to do is jump up on the bed and give some serious kisses for a wake up call. 70 lbs. of loving dog will help you to move quickly before you are pinned :)

I have stopped adding the yogurt to her food and I still get dirty looks at feeding time. She will sit or walk around like if she doesn't go right for the food I'll break down and get something to put on her food. I might have, had I not left the new carton of yogurt at the Spa. Ah well!! Life is pretty routine and we are working on less "talk" before going out and more quiet, sit and wait time. She really gets going when the neighbor brings his Gordon Setter to the field out back to let him run. I always know when he's there...gee can you guess how? Once it dries up a little, and yes I have faith it will dry up before the rainy season starts, we will start to go for runs in the field on a 60' rope and see how she does. We have to build the leg up slowly. But the foot looks good and the fur is starting to grow back on her leg where she was shaved. I have had to limit her hoove time as I've discovered she can break a piece off and barf it back up later....especially when laying on the bed :) She hasn't been interested in her raw bone lately so will have to try again soon. We seem to have lost the one she cleaned up...go figure.

Casey has been with us for 3 months come the 23rd. Boy I wonder where the time has gone. I know she has made great strides and I'm proud of her. But whatever family takes her to their loving home will do best by taking her to obedience class for socializing and bonding. I believe she will eventually realize not all dogs are bad........and that she should try to be nice to all of 'em. So with Casey's foot healing well she is ready for her forever home. I know the right person/family is out there and I can tell you with all she's been through, she is a sweet girl and in time will come around to dealing with other dogs. She is wonderful with humans....all sizes and ages, she is a great protector of home and hearth, she has a ton of love and kisses to share and is always ready to just sit and listen about your day or heartaches or joys. She loves to go on walks - and open a car, van or truck door and she's ready to go. Casey has been through so much and is so deserving of a loving forever Golden Home of her own with her own family. Don't let all the ups and downs and health issues scare you off........she can run, walk and play with the best of 'em. You know the drill................. contact Placement.

Casey and I went to the PetCo event today in Maple Grove. Over all she did pretty well. I think the outing was a bit overwhelming and close quarters. Some of the dogs she liked just fine and some she wasn't interested in having anything to do with them. It was rewarding to have people come and say "This is Casey......I've been reading about her". She loves people and was great with the little kids, tho I think her size might be a bit much for the toddlers when they see her :) My brother and his Bruno (the Shepherd) came to pick up Reba (who was Miss Social at the event) and keep her while we're gone. Both the girls were pretty tired by the time we left at about 1 or so. I wanted Casey to socialize with the other dogs as much as possible and see how she would do. I don't think at this point large groups of furr butts are very comfortable for her. She is so sweet with my old Reba and people and kids, it's hard to explain and understand her dislike of some of the dogs, but that's just Casey. She is who she is and hopefully with her foot healing and not having to wear a bandage anymore (I did bandage it for the event to be safe) we will be able to go out more and hopefully let her see it is a good place out there with lots of good dogs.

We will be gone for a few days and so Casey will be going to the Spa at Sam & Danni's and will be unavailable to meet anyone during this time. You can contact placement if you would like to talk and meet Casey when I return. We should both be rested after a little R & R. Have a good week.

I can't believe Casey has been with us for almost 2 months. What strides she has made in both health and personality :) Today we were to see Dr. Nancy, as every evening when I changed her bandages there was fresh blood. A couple of the stitiches had come loose, so those were removed. Where there had been black skin on top of the foot...it fell off. At this time the foot is pretty nasty to look at, but as time goes on it will heal. We are doing "sugar bandages".....yes, just as it sounds. You pour sugar on the foot and then bandage it, it helps fight the bacteria. Isn't it just amazing what you have learned since Casey came to us?

We got the biopsy report back. Good news...no cancer!!! Dr. Nancy had also cut one of the toe bones in half and swabbed it and sent it in for a culture. Wow - we found out that the infection in the bone is resistant to the antibiotic she has been on. They said it could be she just built up an immunity to it after being on it so long.....guess 8 weeks will do it. They have now been able to name that infection....and we have started a new antibiotic that should work just fine. All the surrounding tissue looks good, so we'll keep her on this new antibiotic for 2 weeks to be sure we clear up any remaining infection. We will also now give her foot "air time" when we change the bandage every night. It will mean some serious cuddling on the couch so I can make sure she leaves her unbandaged foot alone. She will see Dr. Nancy next week to remove remaining stitches and check on the progress of the healing. We'll give it another week and she'll check Casey's foot one last (hopefully) time. Meanwhile I will work on a little exercising on her foot and leg. She will never have a perfect foot in the looks or walking department. Because there was some damage higher in the leg she will always have a limp and most likely will walk on her "toes" and front pads rather than more flat footed walking on her big pad. But I believe when all is said and done, and the healing is done, she will be just fine playing, running and walking. She is still young, less than 6 years old, and once this is licked she should be healthy as she can be.

If you have followed Casey's story these past couple of months you have read and know how far she has come. The girl that charged into my house 2 months ago is long gone. Her teeth and gums are healthy, her tongue is a bit shorter (but please note pic....still long enough to lick peanut butter off the side of her mouth :) and she is short 2 toes....but this big Golden bear is so sweet and loving and deserves someone to really love her, understand her past life, see her for who she is NOW, and know she is and will be as normal and healthy as the average bear :)

So, if you have been waiting to hear if she has cancer or not.....she DOES NOT!! In a couple more weeks she will be able to go to her Forever Golden Home.....the question is....will it be yours? She is a very special dog that has overcome a very physically and emotionally painful past....she will only go to the perfect home and a person/family that will love her for always. She is such a happy girl, tail always thumping, ready to go for a ride at the drop of a hat...or more likely the jingle of keys, she loves to run and go for walks...which has been off limits for almost 2 weeks now.....she manages to make friends with other furr butts, likes the cats, and doesn't get up on the bed unless invited....which isn't very often with her foot problems, as I don't want her jumping down. She has the most beautiful blonde curly/wavy coat and of course those big, deep brown eyes that say so much in so many different ways. Casey has been my greatest joy in fostering and reminds me why I have done this....to help a dog reach this level of success.......and all we had to do was love her and get her healthy. That's what it's all about.

If you are an approved app who's ready to meet Ms. Casey, contact Placementatragom [dot] org and we'll be happy to give you a call and we can chat about Casey and hopefully answer any questions you might have. If you haven't yet filled out an online application, do so now!

Well, what a day!!! Casey and I have never been to the Pet Expo before and it was pretty exciting with lots of people and different breeds of dogs, exotic birds, bunnies, a cat and well, lots of attention. I feel like I repeated Casey's sad story so many times I wish I had printed up flyers with her story :) She was so good....she got a little growly with Dewey 06-03-003 when she first realized he was there, but it soon passed. Our shift was from 3:30 to 7 pm. By the end of the night Casey was one tired girl. I must say I was extremely proud of her - she was good with kids, people, other dogs.....and I got the afternoon off without any serious barking :) At the very end a couple from way past Duluth stopped by and we had a wonderful conversation about Casey and their dog that has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge. If you have never gone to the Pet Expo and want to find out how many different rescue groups, clubs, humane socities, types of toys, food, treats, custom picture frames, jewelry there, and see the work of a caricature artist, beds, dog doo doo pick up service, fencing etc.....well you better go to the next one. You will be amazed. It was a good time to meet some fosters that I have only emailed with, see RAGOM dogs that have been adopted.....it was just great. But best of all it was AWESOME to see Casey interact with the other dogs and all the people with all the commotion going on.....she was a lady. Of course, it didn't hurt that so many people stopped by and had lots of love pats and attention to hand out too!! By the time it was time to go, Casey just stood by the door waiting for me to open it so she could get into the Doggie Mobile and head out. She buried her head in my lap and slept most of the way to pick up Reba and Buddy, and then all the way back to St Cloud. We changed her dressing on her foot, put the e-collar on - she got to go without it all day :) - and she was off in slumberland. So if you didn't come and meet my Casey Girl, you missed a great opportunity.........not to mention meeting the rest of the crew. If you think just cuz she's "unavailable" at this time that you can't meet her.....think again. If you're already an approved app, you may contact Placementatragom [dot] org and we'll set a date up any time :) If you're not, fill out your app online today! Have a wonderful week.

Tomorrow is the big day for Ms. Casey. She will have the surgery on her left rear foot, which will involve the removal of the 2 middle toes. Keep your paws crossed this will be the end of misery for her and her foot.

Poor thing is just to the point she is playing with the troops, jumping up and down and showing 'em she's the Jr. Queen (everyone knows Reba really rules) and now more pain to go through. Meanwhile she has been her own sweet self, playing with Reba and Buddy....when she chooses. She's always happy to see you when you walk through the door, and of course will cuddle with anyone at anytime. She is without a doubt a big old Golden bear. And if you look closely you will see she has these solid brown yes....just deep dark brown.

Her tongue has healed well enough that she can actually get the p.b. outta the bone or Kong.....and her drinking out of the big water bowl seems to be improving, and she can get every last piece of food out of her food bowl. Such strides for one sick girl 6 weeks ago. Physical and personality change....all for the better. I will let you know how the surgery went and how things look overall in a day or two. She is sooooo worth meeting, because she has so much to give and requires just lotza love, pets, pats, scritches, walks and some playtime. Feel free to come and meet her. Just email Placementatragom [dot] org.

Casey has been with us since Dec. 24, 2005. When she arrived she had awful teeth, a bad 'tude, a serious infection in her left hind foot and a sad past. Each time there was an altercation I thought, "I can't do this anymore, she'll never get along with other dogs and I don't know what to do." Since that time I have been amazed by this girl. She learned to get along ok with Scooder before he moved to his forever home. She made peace with my Reba who has never met a dog she didn't like.....tho it was a close call with Casey. Then Cassie the puppy came.....there were the growls and barking, but before the week was gone she was allowing the puppy to be by her and chew on her. I figured it must be because Cassie was a puppy. So I held my breath when my furr butt "nephew" Bruno came last week end and then again on Wednesday (he's staying until Monday)..... please, I thought, just let her not attack him, ignore him like she did last weekend. No one could've prepared me for what she did.....she played with him, let him take her hooves away from her, in some instances right out of her mouth!!! So I felt there was hope that when I brought Buddy 06-038 home tonight, she'd get her growling, barking and snapping outta the way and I'd keep an eye on her. Once again she shocked me. We did the meet and greet outside and nary a growl or snap, just some old fashioned sniffing and greeting. Once in the house she was more concerned about eating and going back out. As you can tell by the pictures, she posed nicely with her new foster bro and they even laid near one another while enjoying a hoove. She just amazes me in so far as how much progress she has made. Instead of wanting to rip a new dog's head off, she let's them come in and accepts them and in the case of Bruno has actually played with him. Once Bruno goes home I will be interested to see what she does with Buddy Boy...I don't count on anything being perfect.....but I have faith in Casey. She loves people and now is slowly learning to like and accept other dogs and even play.

Casey will never be perfect, her hind leg and foot will never be perfect, her tongue won't grow long again and she'll always have to lap up water longer and more often. I would never have believed there would come a time a dog would be able to walk up to her, let alone walk up and take her hoove right from under her nose and walk away with his face intact. She is the epitomy of love, courage, faithfulness, playfulness, and acceptance. When I look into her big brown eyes I see peace finally, and hope that she knows when she leaves us for her Forever Golden Home and Family she will understand how she taught me to never say "never"......even a sad and hurting dog can learn to trust and accept and so should I. Whoever is special enough to have this beautiful girl share their life will be very blessed. She has nothing but love and more love to give. But whoever brings her into their life will have to see about her storm anxiety and be prepared and willing to work through it with her. She is a survivor who will you give you more than you will ever get from anyone or anything else. I know I must start to seriously look for her forever home.....I know in my heart the infection will be gone and she will be well enough to move on. I can't imagine her not here....yet I know whoever is allowed to bring her into their life will have to be very special, because Casey is one special dog.

So if you're thinking about Casey, email Placement. You won't know what you're missing until you meet her......

Casey's update is all about her relationship with the other dogs that have been to our house. She was none too happy to see a puppy....namely Cassandra (Cassie) 06-012, so we kept them separated. Finally I figured out Casey was feeling left out by not being able to come into the kitchen with us. So with supervision we let Casey and resident Reba join us. Oh yeah, there were a few growls, but eventually we saw that this is Casey's way. She really doesn't know how to relate other dogs. Also, I think after about a month of antibiotics it was starting to take it's toll. To the rescue--- another foster mom talking about giving her yogurt. Say what you will but it's made all the difference in the world. Casey is back to eating and is feeling quite "frisky" (remember Howard on Happy Days :) Anyway, thru the week she came to terms with the puppy and as you can see, checking her out and watching her became acceptable. One night while in the kitchen Casey was laying on the floor next to me and I heard these little low grumbles....I looked down to find Cassie chewing on Casey's leg. It has been an awesome thing to see.....Casey being very patient and allowing the puppy to be a puppy.

Over the weekend my "nephew", Bruno, was up. Well, there was a lot of barking and teeth baring and by the weekend's end all was well. Which is a good thing as they both have deep, ear piercing barks and Bruno is coming back on Wednesday to stay until next Monday. But we'll keep an eye on them and Bruno will be kenneled while we're at work. We also had Murphy the Beagle come over for a short visit. He and Bruno and Cassie had a blast......Casey was not pleased, but I think she finally saw they were playing. She is getting more accepting of the noise level :)

She continues to grow in so many ways. We have taken to walking and with her Gentle Leader she is a perfect lady. Tonight there was a guy ahead of us with a small dog who continued to growl and carry on, but my big girls just kept walking and minded their manners. She just loves those walks around the neighborhood. I have also extended her outside lead to about 60' and boy does she love that freedom of going further around the yard.

The barking? Ah yes, it remains her only real issue per se. We continue to have her "sit - wait" before letting her out the door to the garage. Again, once out there she thinks barking will help me move along faster to hook her up. Now I just stand and tell her to sit and be quiet and until she does.....no going out.

Tonight while I have been at the computer she has felt pretty loving and wanted more attention than usual and has put her front legs on my lap and been looking for love. What can I say.....I had to stop and love her up.

Casey was good with Cassie's new human sisters. No jumping, a little body leaning and of course the desire to be touched. I was very happy with her actions around the girls (who are 6 & 8). But I don't feel small kids (any younger than about 6) would be ideal overall. She would do well with the older kids who are comfortable with her, or a family or single person. She loves the one on one attention and thrives on it. She gets along well with my resident who is 13.

I am looking forward to her checkup and x-ray in a couple of weeks. The way she is walking on her left hind leg on our walks tells me she is feeling good and hopefully the infection will be gone. This girl can still run, walk and jump up when excited. The jumping up tonight when I got home was really a surprise......she's acting her age...5 1/2....not like 10 :) She has the most soulful eyes, is a wonderful companion, completely house trained, sits for her food, is learning to take treats "nice", and overall is a sweet and loving girl. She enjoys getting ahold of a toy now and then and shaking it up. It just strikes me as so funny to see her do this. Tonight she and Reba had a little...ok a second...of play time. They are both probably glad they only have to share me with them now :) Little do they know there is a young man coming to join them :)

Please give some thought to Casey.....she would bring so much joy to your life with her loving, acceptance, walks and car rides. She is the perfect companion. Casey is now up to meeting prospective families, so feel free to contact placement. We'd love to have you come meet her. She is a gorgeous blonde with eyes that will make you melt.

We got some good news for Casey. They got the histology report on the aspiration they did on her left foot. It's NOT fungus!!! So onward ho we go with the 6 week treatment of antibiotics and hopefully that will take care of the infection. After a couple days of being off pain meds we have put her back on. She was to the point where she would hardly put her foot down and put weight on it. So until the infection improves, we'll provide her with some comfort.

The pictures I am sending pretty much sum up this sweet girl. She is first to put her wet face in your lap for hugs, pets and pats. Napping on the old couch in the family room is her favorite hangout, and she has finally caught on that she does not get the whole thing.....she has to share!! Since getting the ok to go back to dry food and permission to "chew", she has made the most of the hooves around here. Tonight I gave her the kong with peanut butter inside......she sorta chased it around the kitchen for a few minutes, but finally got the hang of it. And just look at that face and those big brown eyes :) What a doll.

Even the cats like her and join her on the couch for rest time. I am thinking she may be sleeping in someone's bed during the day.....no proof though. She loves the outdoors and will go out and roll and scratch around in the snow and make these "grunting" noises. If she has one fault it's her barking. She is much better, but we get to the door to go out and she starts barking. Now we make her sit and and be quiet before she gets out into the garage. Where we then do the same.....just as she does the same barking. She is trying very hard to understand the concept of "sit, wait, ok"....when it comes to her food. I noticed Scooder always watched Reba, and so I have moved Casey over by Reba in hopes she will pick up the idea. But we love her just the way she is, limping, wet, drooly mouth and no real manners.... at this point :) I keep telling her she can't use her handicap as an excuse for bad manners....not sure she gets it.

Her tongue has healed well enough that chewing doesn't seem to bother her and with nice strong, clean teeth and the abcessed, fractured and bad teeth gone, she is in a much better mood. She had a short tongue to begin with, and after having some of it lasered off it is a bit shorter..thus she drinks many times for long periods of time to get the water she needs. I don't think she can even lick the end of her nose, the poor dear. Scooder would lick it off for her, but I don't think she can count on Reba giving her the same service. She is very good with my old resident, Reba, and would get between her and Scooder when he would start carrying on and barking at Reba to play. So Casey has learned to use her body language and not her teeth :) What a smart girl!!

When her foot is healed, the infection gone and she has learned to bark less and sit better she will be ready for her Forever Golden Home. So if you are thinking this sweet 5 1/2 year old girl would be just right for your home, keep watching. She will do best in a home as an only dog or in one with an older, more quiet and reserved dog. She really doesn't like confrontation, but likes cats, hugs, kisses and cuddling. I keep telling her the time will come for her to find her forever home, but meanwhile she has to work on her manners. From the looks I'm getting from the girls I'd say it's time to take a break and hit the outdoors.

Nap time...

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

We just returned from the vet and Casey's visit was just ok. The hole on the pad of her left foot is a bit bigger, which could mean it's allowing for more drainage. However, she had been licking/chewing on her upper leg and we aren't sure what the problem is. It may be pain related, but am hoping not. They aspirated her left paw to see if it's a bacterial or fungus infection. We are keeping our paws crossed for bacterial as fungus would mean amputation.

Casey will be on antibiotics for another 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks we will again x-ray her left foot and leg and hope that the infection is gone. We are taking her off her pain meds to see how she does without. IF she shows signs of pain or great discomfort she will go back on them. Meanwhile, the stitches will stay in her tongue and come out on their own. She can now go back to dry food.....with water to make it mushy, but it's a start. Treats (besides a glob of peanut butter) are now allowable, and the really big news is she can now have chew toys, but we will keep an eye on her to be sure she doesn't damage her tongue. Dr. A. had hoped her tongue would be a bit more healed, as well as the ulceration inside her mouth below her nose. Again keeping an eye on those.

Casey is so sweet and still thinks she is a lap dog. Almost 70 lbs. of lap dog is a bit much to be moving off you :) Her disposition in regard to Scooder 05-382 has improved greatly and at moments she acts like she would like to actually play. She makes herself at home on the "couch", loves to cuddle, and couldn't care less if the cats join her. We haven't let her on the beds and she is content to sleep on a big doggie bed on the floor. We will now start to take short walks and see how she does.

So unless something really changes, Casey will be hanging out for the next 6 weeks in St Cloud.

Ordinarily I would not be sending in a new update so soon, but I've got such Big News!!! Casey the crabby and don't like any other dog and will growl and eat you up, has had a change of heart and when you see the pics you will see what I mean. What a joy to not have to keep her and Scooder 05-382 separated. I would not have believed the 2 of them would be licking peanut butter off my fingers...at the same time. That they could wait to go outside..together. Or just sit and or lay by one another without WW III.....it's amazing. Casey has come a long way in a very short time. I do believe her bad abcessed teeth and infection in her body played a large part. Going from original owner, to a Humane Society, then another farm and then back to the HS again.

Her luck changed when a very nice lady rescued her and contacted us. Then it was a long ride, a couple more stops and then coming into yet another new house with 2 more new dogs. Now we have this sweet girl who thinks she should climb in your lap, forgetting she is over 70 lbs :) She loves my husband and when he goes out to fill the bird feeder or shovel etc. she sits at the back door whining and barking (and it's a deep bark). She loves to be out and as he says, she's a typical farm dog....ready to follow you around and ready to jump in the car or van to go for a ride.

Yesterday we took Casey and Scooder to PetCo for a little shopping and socialzing. They both did very well. We kept the muzzle on Casey just as a precaution. They both got lots of pets, pats and ooohhhss :) They were good when they saw another dog, but we didn't let them go check out the other furr butts. Will take them out again this week.

Casey had her last IV on Friday and Saturday they removed the IV catheter so she is free from that. She loves to eat snow, but is now drinking water also. The biggest thing is she is allowed in the house with us Without the Muzzle!!!! The down side is the other 2 can't have any chew toys as she wants to knaw on them, too. She is just doing so well all around it's amazing. Once again I have had a dog show me that first impressions aren't always the right ones. Enjoy the pictures and know Casey is on her way to good health. Next week will know about her foot and the biopsy. Stay tuned for updates. Happy New Year from Casey and her foster family!

Waiting to go out...nicely!
