Sunny 05-174

Profile

6/11/05: Sunny arrived on Thursday the 9th, ironically one of the few sunny days we've had. Sunny is a year old, not spayed and overweight. She has been an outside dog all her life. Due to a family illness after getting Sunny, she never really got the chance to socialize, etc. She is a large dog that overpowers the small children....at this point. I brought her into the kitchen, she met the cat, which she'd never seen before, with no problems. Good old Sam will greet anyone.

She was a little unsure of resident Reba and eventually it took a couple go-rounds, at which point Sunny learned that Reba may be smaller and weigh a lot less, but she is the Queen. Sunny really doesn't know how to play with other dogs or even toys, per se. She is great at running after the ball and in most cases bringing it back and dropping it. She minds very well in that if you call her, she pretty much comes.

I spent the first day home with her. We spent a couple hours on the deck getting brushed and matts cut out. She was/is touchy with her feet and being brushed by her haunches and back - I think mostly due to the fact of so many tangles, etc. She allowed me to cut her nails...took a bit of coaxing, but got it done. Then off to the shower. Let me tell you, the shower doesn't allow a lot of turn around room with "full figured" gals in it. We managed. That night I gated her in my kitchen. Never a whimper or whine. She slept all night til Sam woke her up, and even then she only barked once. No accidents...not a one!!! Next day I gated her in kitchen while I went to work for about 7 hours and no accidents or chewing, etc. At this point I think her signal to go out, is to come and just keep bugging you til you ask her to go out. I'm trying to get her to associate the words "go out and potty" with actually going out and doing it.

My little 5 year old neighbor girl came to check out the new dog, and Sunny was very good with her...a little excited at first, but settled down rather quickly. She doesn't seem to have any guarding issues with food, though when I first put my hand in her bowl she gave a little growl, but has been fine since. Now, the rawhide bone has been different. She is very protective of it. I continue to give it to her for short periods, take it away, give it back and then put it away. She's doing better.

She has the deepest growly sounding bark...hard to describe. She isn't much of a barker though, even when you come home. She tried to play with the neighbor's year old Beagle....I think the noise she makes scared him more than anything. She is a bit of a Velcro girl...where I go, she goes. No interest in interacting with Reba....except to push her outta the way for my attention. She doesn't seem to have any issues with men and goes to my husband readily, as well as my 24 year old daughter.

At this point she needs some socializing and introduction to more dogs to help decide if she should be an only dog or not. Her nickname is "Miss Puddles".....a lot of drool when she gets excited, plays, etc. But she does allow me to wipe her face with the "drool towel" :) For now she is staying in the kitchen another night and then we'll try the bedroom and see how that goes. Meanwhile she has free run of the house when we are home.

She has not chewed on anything inappropriate or even touched the shoes that are everywhere, nor tried to get on any furniture unless you count her paws on the arm chairs trying to reach your hand :) She is just so excited to be around people and can't get enough of being touched and talked to. Today she went for her first ride in the van....what an adventure for her...she just kept looking from side to side like she couldn't take it all in. She hasn't been on a leash much, so she likes to pull. She had had a heavy metal choker which I dispensed with, tried the Gentle Leader which she hated, and so went to a regular dog collar. We'll continue with the GL on and off to see if she will adjust.

She loves to be out and play and I am sure it's difficult in some ways to be confined to a house, but the attention and air conditioning makes up for it, I think. She is so good in the house and no accidents.....just amazes me. This girl will love you from morning til night. I'll update again in a few days. If you think you'd like to meet Sunny, please email Placementatragom [dot] org.

Updates

Sunny has been a wonderful addition to our family. She is very friendly and really enjoys attention. She likes walks and chasing tennis balls and birds. She is slowly but surely learning to sit, stay and stay down. She had an issue with nipping at first, but is working her way out of that. And, she is slimming down. She is a big dog at 80 pounds, who is still a puppy-at-heart at 15 months. It is rather entertaining when she starts to bounce around like a puppy and begins to knock people and things over!

Life hasn't been all sunshine and roses. She has left her mark on the carpet in the house in a couple spots thanks to an unmet need to go outside and to some colored marking pens that were left on the floor. (Gee, they looked like something to eat, but all they did was make my paws all red!!) She also discovered that candy found under a child's bed doesn't agree with her stomach and makes her sick. And, she does get a bit possessive of her family when other animals and small children are around and receiving attention.

All in all, she has adjusted well and her new family is quite pleased with her. Next week, she begins obedience training. We expect that she will do well, because she is smart, eager to please and has a very pleasant personality.

Hi Everyone,

Well, I'm home from the "spa"....that's what we girls call it when we've been gone getting a little work done. So I got my "eyes done"......hey, the Clint Eastwood look is gone (I'm aging my foster mom with that one), and I am told regaining my girlish figure will be work, but will have its rewards. Plus, once I'm in shape the bod won't be spoiled again by any little ones (spayed, you see)!!

I am feeling quite well, as my foster mom found out today when she brought home a new foster brother and sister. Wow, it was a bit crowded there for a minute with everyone greeting everyone else....you know, it's hard to work a room when you have a 30" clear plastic thing sticking out from your head. I managed to break a stitch and the collar my mom had wasn't big enough, so it was back to vet to check it all out and get a bigger collar. Like I don't have enough going on, now I'm stuck with this thing. Ok, ok it's not the end of the world, but it really does cramp my style. There is something to be said for having the eyes done....gives you that wide eyed doe look....and now people won't think I'm older than a year.

So, all in all I'm ready to start taking calls/interviews for my forever home. I will have to have my stitches removed in about 10 days and it can be done up here or at your vet....your choice. I'm waiting for my foster mom to send in the pics of me with the Old English Sheep Dog and the Bull Mastiff that we went to visit last Sunday. Whoa....that was one Big....no, make that Huge Dude....glad I didn't give birth to that head!!! Anyway, my socializing skills have improved, and the 2nd cat here finally decided I was worthy to be brushed up against....cats!!! Won't see him again for a week with the 2 new guys here.

I am getting attached to my foster mom and family. I was to the point mom could leave the room and I didn't feel I had to follow, I knew she'd be back. But after a couple days at the spa....well let's just say, where she goes, I go!! Guess it's time for me to move on and get attached to someone that I can stay attached to.......hint hint!!

I still need work on the leash/walk thing....what's wrong with just going where you want when you want?? What's with this having to walk next to my mom......I don't get it. But I do enjoy the walking part. I can't wear my Gentle Leader now with the stitches, but I do better with it than a flat collar.

So now you have the update, you know I'm healthy, when the swelling goes down my eyes will be shown to their best and the diet/walk thing...well, we're working on it. If you are ready for one cool chick, email Placementatragom [dot] org. I'll be waiting to hear from ya'll.

Love, Sunny

Hi, Sunny here. Whew it's been busy and I'm learning fast. I am now able to have run of the house during the day, sleep in the bedroom at night (sometimes on the bed...still having trouble getting up on it), no potty accidents, playing ball, hanging with the little girl from next door, and made a new friend, Murphy the beagle, see pics. Wow we played so hard they had to carry him home:) My only crime was a tupperware glass.....it came off the counter easily and was a great chew toy....til I got caught. Guess I'll stick to the doggie toys.

I am getting so I don't mind being brushed, and as you can tell by my pictures I'm looking pretty good. Most all of the matting and snarls are gone, which makes brushing nicer. I have my nails done once a week, whether I want them done or not! I have discovered toys!! I love the green squeaky soft bone, the hard bone to chew on, the occassional raw hide bone and of course playing ball!! Still not sure how I feel about playing tug with the big rope. I am walking/practicing really, with the Gentle Leader and regular leash. Things that scare me yet are the cars and motorcycles that drive by; guess I just need to be out more.

I went to the vet yesterday and there was another Golden there and I really wanted to play, but he had to go into the other room. Jeepers, my foster mom thought I weighed 100 #'s.....how about 86, thank you very much. The doc did say I needed to take some of the weight off, and slowly, so guess with not getting as much food and playing more it ought to come off. Mom could use a little taken off, too, so maybe we can do it togeather. Anyway, I'm in good health, all my shots are now up to date, no heartworm, and clean ears:) I am going to be spayed soon and also I need my "eyes done". Yep, those bottom eyelids are turning inward and irratating my eyes so I squint and they have a discharge and it's very uncomfortable. Guess I'll have both surgeries done at the same time and only have to wear the "cone" one time. I can enjoy laying on the gated deck for recovery and when/if it gets really hot, the a/c vents will be just fine.

I am ready for my forever home and family. I am young, energetic, and I really do listen pretty good; with a little more training I'd be darn near perfect. I am NOT a big jumper, counter surfer or barker! I could live with another dog and cats and kids probably 8 and up as I am a pretty big girl. If you think we could become a forever family, please email Placementatragom [dot] org (and maybe the dog-updates person will put one of my newer pictures on the Available Dogs page....updated pics are so much better). I will keep you company, go for walks, play ball, accompany you around the house and overall just love you forever and ever. You can come meet me while I'm recovering....gifts welcomed.

Love, Sunny

This is Sunny playing/pinning Murphy the Beagle. What fun it was!All is fair, even when the big dog gets tired.Yep, finally figured out what these toys are for....and they squeak!
