Ava came into RAGOM's care when her owner could no longer adequately care for all of his dogs. Ava is a petite, healthy girl who gave birth to 10 puppies in March 2019. Due to her limited socialization, any children in Ava's forever home must be age 13 or older. She is currently an only dog in her foster home and could potentially live with another dog that is mellow. A physical fence isn't required, but to keep her safe Ava would need to be accompanied by her humans when she goes outside on a leash.

Hi, this is Ava just wanting to give you a quick update that things have changed for me. I am a very lucky girl and have found a wonderful forever family. I have a new sister Emme who is four-legged (a cat… not really sure about her yet but that’s OK).

My new family is very excited to help me move on in life and find the world a safe place. They are open to having me go to training, giving me time and loving me through the process, and allowing me time to grow and build confidence.

Hi this is Ava‘s foster mom and I have to admit this little sweetie took a little piece of my heart with her. In the month I had her she had grown in unbelievable strides. She was a happy puppy, just such a treat to have around.

She was my great bed partner after I broke my wrist falling on the ice the week before she went to her forever family. She is something else and I know that she is going to make this family so very happy. I miss her tremendously but wish her all the best in the world. Cannot wait to hear about her progress.

Hi there from Ava—here is my weekly update:

I love being the only doggie in the house and I LOVE my foster momma! I get to sleep all night with her and I’m a very good sleeper.

I am getting some new food that is different from the kibble and I really love it. I eat it all up. I do like to have my people in the kitchen with me while eating right now. I do all my business outside and foster mom says I have never had any accidents in her house EVER.

Foster Mom took me for a walk and I was very nervous, but I did it! Was glad to get home. I do not feel the need to hide in the corners anymore and love being by momma's side. Do you want to be my forever family and help me continue to grow and learn? I promise to love you to pieces!

Hi there, Foster Mom here—Ava has made huge strides this week!

She is great in her kennel and so happy when I get home from work. She does some little puppy zoomies and gives lots of love, sometimes a kiss or two! She loves to throw herself in my lap and roll around. She goes right out to potty and is a champion at doing that.

Some highlights for the week:

  • zoomies and kisses
  • picking out a toy from the basket
  • chewing on an elk horn
  • going for a walk
  • eating and drinking with vigor
  • kisses to see if I am ready to get up (if not she will lay back down and wait)
  • went for a car ride and did great (in her kennel, but she went right in the kennel and jumped right out)
  • loves when Foster Mom eats (most of the time she does get a scrap)
  • loves to be on the couch with me
  • loves belly rubs
  • loves me to pieces
  • follows me everywhere
  • loves to be brushed

Alright, well enough from me—I love this girl! She is a gem and will make someone very happy.

Hi there—Ava here! In case you’ve been wondering what happened to me, my previous foster had some things she needed to attend to. So I’ve moved to a new foster home where I’m the only dog and have my foster mom all to myself!

I am a sweet little girl who is looking for my forever family. I need to build confidence and know that my world is safe. If you give me comfort, patience, and guidance I will trust you and learn new things. Could you be that family?

I will throw myself in your lap and love you up with a smile on my face! I love belly rubs, too. Well enough from me—my foster mom wants to tell you more.

Hi, this is Ava’s new foster mom, and this sweet little peanut has quite the story.

She has been through a lot since coming into RAGOM’s care: she delivered 10 puppies, was spayed, got an infection (all cleared up now), and was treated for a tick-borne disease she had contracted in Oklahoma. And now she’s in a new foster home.

Ava is taking anxiety medication to relieve her overwhelming fear of the world around her. She may not need to stay on this forever, but for now it helps relieve some of her running and hiding behavior as she learns to absorb the noises and activity of a family dog’s everyday environment.

Because Ava was not socialized before she came to RAGOM she exhibits some of the fearful behaviors of a commercial breeding dog. Usually these dogs require another dog for leadership and guidance.

However, Ava has shown fear-based reactions to some dogs. So, for now she is the only dog living with me, and we are going to see how she does in a home as an only dog. She might do well with a second dog if it was mellow and not super active.

She would do best with someone at home with her most of the time for support; however, this could change in time. Ava might love to live with just one person or a couple. If there are children in the home, they must be 13 or older, as the noise and busy-ness of young children would be too much for her.

Ava does her business outside, but then wants to come right back in the house. She is crate trained and spends 8 hours in her crate while I’m at work and has done well.

She would do best with a fenced-in yard, but that is optional as long as someone is with her outdoors on a leash. Her fear could make her bolt or hide.

Ava is doing great with me; she follows me around going upstairs and downstairs and in and out of all the other rooms. She wants to be right by my side.

She will also sit on the couch with me for a little bit but would rather be by my feet. She sleeps soundly all night in bed with me and does not move around much! She is most definitely a snuggle bunny.

Dogs like Ava are a treasure. They grow to love you fiercely, as they have not ever been truly loved. Every milestone they pass will make you want to jump for joy and count your blessings.

Ava deserves to see the world as amazing and enjoy life, and we will keep you posted weekly with her progress. I know from experience as a foster that she will get there. It will take time and patience, but the reward for her and her forever family will be astonishing.

Ava went to her first Goldzilla! It was also her foster parents’ first time there as well. She was introduced as a “power snuggler” and walked in the parade like a champ. The rain didn’t get her down, and she was reunited with two of her puppies as well as her first foster mom.

There was nose bopping and her babies seemed to recognize her. It was very cute, damp, and filled with lots of dogs. Our resident dog Mitchell attended as her escort and took up all the extra treats and pets that he could get.

Foster mom would like to emphasize that Ava is a Velcro dog. This is a dog that wants to be by your side 24/7 and will love her human with the intensity of a thousand suns.

She is house broken and currently gets a potty break every 4 hours. We have resumed crate training and she now sleeps with abandon in her crate. At night, she snores with contentment in her crate and does a happy dance when released for breakfast in the morning.

She is learning to sit nicely for treats and very delicately takes them from your hand. We call Ava “Little Miss” around the house in acknowledgement of her growing set of manners.

Hello RAGOM land. Ava is confirmed to attend Goldzilla this Sunday. She will be walking in the Foster Showcase Parade. We also have plans for a mini-reunion with her original foster mom and her puppies.

We hope to see you there!

Ava has had quite a summer! After recovering from ehrlichiosis, she went in for her spay and developed complications. In a rare twist, she developed a uterine stump infection from MRSP, which is a canine version of MRSA. This is a staph infection that is resistant to most antibiotics.

After multiple rounds of extremely strong antibiotics and surgery to remove the infected mass, Ava is on her way to being a healthy girl.

Ava is getting bouncier and happier as the days pass. A neighbor heard her story and gave her a stuffed lamb doll. In spite of the e-collar, she does her best to try to play with the stuffy. Ava gets startled by voices and man-made sounds outdoors—so a fence is still required in her new home.

Inside the house, she shows very few anxieties when home with her people. House guests are finally less stressful for her as well! Visitors to the home are no longer terrifying, and she will even approach people and sniff their legs.

Ava has developed a very special style of cuddling we call "power snuggling" where she will use her entire body to snuggle. Ava is tentatively scheduled to attend Goldzilla in a few days. We hope to see you there.

Ava is eager for this business of being a mama to wrap up. She cannot be spayed until four weeks after she is done nursing, and we are busily trying to find homes for all ten of her babies. She has attempted to cut them off the milk supply since they were about three weeks old, but they are like ants on a melting Popsicle at a picnic.

Once Ava is spayed she can go to her forever home. Here’s what we’ve learned about Ava in the time we’ve had her.

She can be shy around new people and is slow to warm up to some, but when she chooses you to be her “person” she loves you unconditionally. As her foster mom, I have been that special person and she sticks to me like glue.

Ava likes to make a bed in the Rubbermaid tote full of puppy towels and blankets.

She loves to snuggle on the couch, and would probably enjoy sleeping in the bed right next to me if I would allow it. Instead she settles for the floor directly next to the bed. She will lay at my feet while I’m working on the computer or under the table while I’m eating.

Ava is part mountain goat. Just kidding, but we have found that she can jump out of a 4-foot exercise pen. If her new home has a fence, she will need to be monitored as she can leap a low fence in a single bound. The good news is that she is good on the leash and sticks close to her person.

Ava 19-026

Ava is smart especially when it comes to tracking down food. Back to that mountain goat aspect, she can climb up onto any counter to get at food that might tempt her.

Ava has free reign in our finished basement as that is where her puppies are currently housed. She has not gotten into any trash or chewed up anything other than knocking the puppies food bowl off a counter. She has also spent some time in a crate and tolerates that, although it’s not her favorite spot.

Coming from a hoarding situation with 15 dogs and living at our house with two other dogs, it is clear that Ava can coexist with other dogs. We have not found her to particularly engage with our dogs, but that could be due to the pregnancy hormones that have made her protective of her pups.

I think she could easily be an only dog or live peacefully with another non-alpha dog that didn’t want to play with her.

Hopefully we can make Ava available for adoption soon, after her puppies find homes and her pregnancy hormones are leveled out. She is ready for that special someone to call her own.

Beautiful Ava came into rescue as one of 13 dogs surrendered by an owner whose unspayed and unneutered pets started breeding to the point he could no longer care for all of them. Ava came to Minnesota on February 21, and within a few weeks Foster Mom was noticing some changes.

The vet confirmed Ava was pregnant and we welcomed 10 adorable puppies into RAGOM’s care on March 25. There are six males and four females, and they come in a delightful mix of coat colors. Who daddy is will remain a mystery.

For now Ava is busy caring for her babies, but both she and her puppies will be available for adoption soon. RAGOM will begin taking applications for puppies when they are around 4 weeks old (late April 2019). They will be ready to go to their forever homes Memorial weekend. Ava should be able to follow shortly after.
