Profile

Janene (called JoJo by her foster family) was surrendered to RAGOM by a commercial breeder. She has become accustomed to gentle petting and snuggling, but typical of former breeder dogs, she is afraid of most things and takes her cues from other dogs. Therefore, she will need a medium to large, confident dog in her forever home. JoJo can live with older children (age 13 or older) who are respectful of animals, and she is fine with cats. A physical fence is required to keep her safe.

JoJo has been adopted by a wonderful family! She has another dog to help guide her through life and show her how to be a true Golden Retriever dog.

JoJo has come a long way since we started fostering her a year ago - she has grown more confident, gained health, and become more socialized. Her new family is committed to continue helping her heal from her past and gently encourage her to grow. They have a tremendous amount of love and knowledge to give her.

Congratulations, JoJo! We love you and you will always be with us!

Janene (JoJo) has learned to sit before she goes outside to potty. I do believe it has boosted her confidence some. We are working on "sloooooow" because she usually races and flies down our outside steps, which she is learning.

We are also working on walking with a leash. This is going very slowly. She has some bad associations with the leash because whenever I bring it out, she goes to her safe spot on her blanket and crouches down.

But she is a smart and very sweet girl and makes progress every day. She needs a family to adopt her who is familiar with this kind of behavior.

We are working with a behaviorist within RAGOM for JoJo. She has learned how to sit when going outside to potty, which is amazing!

We want her to learn to gain some confidence. She is so submissive and apprehensive about everything.

She is such a beauty. Her perfect furever home would be a quiet one, with older children who are very gentle and loving.

JoJo does go on our furniture, so you should be OK with that if you are interested in her. Her safe place is on our couch, where my husband sits at night to watch TV, but she will lay there all day. She also snuggles with us in bed, which we love. She is so special.

JoJo (Janene) has begun to look at us with her eyes open! This is a huge step for her. When we went to pet her on the head, she used to pinch her eyes shut, I think out of fear. But now she usually keeps them open!

She also comes to my desk at home when I’m working during the day and nudges me on the arm to pet her and wags her tail. It’s such a great site to see. She lays near me and the other dogs all day in my office. She often sits with her paws crossed as in the photo below, which is adorable.

JoJo is doing well. She tends to sleep a lot as the pictures show. I covered her with a blanket because she seems a little cold with the fall season. Her coat is on the thinner side.

She is a very quiet dog, sleeping often, not demanding much of anything. She just does what our resident dog does, watching and learning from her. She loves to sleep with us most nights, either cuddling by our heads or at our feet. We continue to work on her fears, trying to socialize her as much as possible.

Janene (we call her JoJo and she has learned this as her name) was surrendered by a commercial breeder in Indiana. She is a beautiful 4.5-year-old Golden Retriever.

Being a former breeder momma, JoJo is extremely undersocialized. She is very shy and fearful; even after being with us for six months she still cowers and shows anxiety towards many things. She tends to sleep a lot and follows our resident dog closely, learning from her. We did start her on Prozac and that has helped some.

When JoJo came to us, we took her to her initial vet visit and found she had very bad ear infections that took multiple treatments with antibiotics to cure. She also had a bad urinary tract infection that took two rounds of meds to get rid of.

She shows classic signs of former breeder dogs. JoJo does the ‘freezing’ technique when she is fearful and anxious, which is literally what it says: she doesn't move and closes her eyes shut. Sometimes she won't go outside all day to potty so we have to pick her up so she won't get a bladder infection again.

JoJo feels safest in the house with our other two dogs, snoozing on the couch or our bed. We have tried to get her to go on walks with us, but she is just too afraid.

JoJo's favorite thing to do is follow our resident dog around and do whatever she does. It's really adorable. When we get her outside, she loves to fetch tennis balls and chase squirrels and mice. She also loves to cuddle with my husband on the couch and hide her face behind him while receiving gentle ear massages and petting.

JoJo loves to eat her breakfast and dinner and is always the first one done. We share healthy treats with her too when we are snacking while watching a movie, which she thinks is heavenly.

Jo Jo's forever family must be very calm, quiet, and understanding of her situation and her personality. I have been told that many commercial breeder dogs never get over their anxiety and fear tendencies. There must be a resident dog in her adoptive home because she watches and learns primarily from other dogs. Other dogs make her feel safe; humans to her are the bad guys.

There also must not be any children under the age of 13 in her adoptive home and they must be gentle and caring with her. Loud noises and sudden movements scare JoJo. She gets along well with our cat.

Because she is a former breeder dog and still frightened by many things, JoJo’s forever home must have a fenced yard (no invisible fencing!), because she has a tendency to flee things that scare her.

Again, she needs a quiet home with a family who will show her love and be very patient with her. My vision for JoJo's forever home is a calm environment, love flowing everywhere for this sweetheart who has been through so much trauma, and patience, patience, patience. She will thrive, it will just take time.
