Do you want a puppy but don’t want to go through the potty-training nightmare? Say hello to Rowan, a 9-month-old boy surrendered to RAGOM because he was getting too large and strong for a home with small children. He has been neutered, is microchipped, and is up to date on all of his vaccinations and preventative medications.

He has been here for a couple of weeks now, and settled in quickly with his foster brother and sister. There is a lot of playing, running around the yard, wrestling, and two walks per day. Having all those outlets to burn off puppy energy has been very beneficial for him.

He also loves to snuggle on the couch. He sleeps in his crate at night without a peep, and has never had an indoor accident.  He is also a big fan of a nice stick to chew on.

Due to the coronavirus, Rowan has never had any formal obedience training. He is really responding well to clicker training in my backyard.

He already knew “sit” and “down”. When he starts digging or getting into something he shouldn’t, calling his name brings him running to me. Once he sits nicely, he gets a treat.  He is VERY food motivated, so continuing his training will be easy and fun for you and him. He takes treats nicely.

Keep in mind, he IS still a puppy, so it is important to redirect unwanted behaviors and reinforce the desired ones.  While he loves the company of other dogs, he would be perfectly fine being the center of attention as the only dog in your home.

We do what are called enrichment walks. They aren’t so much about getting a brisk workout as they are about having an adventure.  We see and hear everything and stop and sniff frequently.

I heard it explained once that power walking with a dog is like being on a road trip as a kid but not being able to look out the windows. Because dogs rely so heavily on scents, it’s critical that they get to experience that part of it. We still have some stretches where we walk quite briskly, and his leashes are usually loose. So, the walks have helped a bit with the pulling issue. But, he IS a very strong boy.

To Rowan, there is nothing more refreshing than a puddle of water or sprinkler run-off in the gutters. He will pull until he gets a drink. During the morning walks, there is also a bit of fun. He loves to stick his face in sprinklers to get a face wash. It is sheer heaven for him.  Oh, and be advised, any stick, twig, or leaf in his path is also fair game.

Rowan’s forever family should be dedicated to making sure he gets a lot of exercise and can continue his training. At this time, any kids should be the age of 10 or older.  He still occasionally gets a little mouthy and does not realize how strong he is. We would not want him to knock over younger kids. 

Rowan is a very good boy and will make a wonderful companion for the right family.
