Profile

Hazel is a retired mama who is learning the good life of being a family companion. She is timid, but very sweet and gentle. Hazel takes guidance from other dogs, so she will need a medium to large, confident dog in her forever home. Any children in the home must be at least 8 years old and dog-savvy. A physical fence is not required, but an invisible fence is not advisable and she must be leashed and monitored at all times. Hazel has not been tested with cats.

Sweet Hazel (now known as Winnie) has found her perfect new home with Halei, Austin, and their playful and affectionate Golden Retriever Maizel. She has progressed so much in the last two months, and her adopters are looking forward to helping her learn what it is like to be a family dog. We are just thrilled to have found such a loving home for her.

Hazel has changed so much in a week! She now loves her walks and stays on my left with a loose leash! How does she know to do that? We walked to the park today where she enjoyed lounging in the sun, and she rolled over for a belly rub!

She learned to jump into the backseat of the car after following our resident dog just once. She will eat a meal without us leaving the room! So many firsts and so quickly.

She is getting to be a happy dog and doing dog things like picking up socks. It is so rewarding to watch her move from scared to happy and trusting. Look at that face!

Hazel is a beautiful purebred Golden Retriever that was surrendered from a breeding facility. She is 6 years old and very sweet, but because she did not grow up or live in a typical household, she is also very timid and scared.

She has been with us for 2 weeks and she has just finally taken a treat from a human hand! She hasn’t played with our resident dog, but clearly prefers him to us. She actually wags her tail occasionally while watching him, but generally moves AWAY from any human activity and to one of her safe spots. Last night, we were thrilled when she joined us in the living room and laid down near Foster Dad.

Here are a few things we know about her in the brief time that she has been with us:

  • She is generally healthy and weighs 65 pounds.
  • She has a double ear infections that she allows us to treat.
  • She did well with a professional grooming.
  • She is trying very hard to be brave on walks, but likes to stick close to home.
  • She avoids people on walks.
  • She knows to pee and poop outside, but people need to be at a distance.
  • She is not destructive when left home and not crated.
  • She likes to cover her food!

She is doing fine right now without a fence, although this requires her to be on a leash or a long lead at all times, and we always go outside with our dogs. At this time, I feel she would not do well with an invisible fence due to her insecurities.

Hazel is a precious, gentle soul that will need a confident dog in her forever home to continue to show her the way. She will be a fabulous addition to a family that has the patience to bring out her true nature.

A spay is schedule for March 16, and she will be available for adoption after she heals a bit from that!
