Hank 09-247

Profile

Hank's given name is Radar by the SO - very nice family that wanted to do the right thing and I so appreciated all they have done for Radar and his siblings. They were well socialized, loved to run and play and truely loved. When we got there all 9 pups and mom were out wandering around. The family had lots of company to love and protect these guys and they really watched the blind ones to make sure they would not wander far.

They have been wormed and vetted on the 15th of June, they will be due for the second set next week sometime. I will get Radar in to be Mircochipped than. HE IS BIG - his mom was tiny - beautiful red and maybe 50 pounds - Dad is a big block head boy - around 90 pounds so these guys could be big or small. All I know is Molly did a great job feeding them!

The three pups were brought to the Opthamologist and we were told they have very limited eye sight. The good news is each of these dogs do have some sight but it is very minimal. They can distiguish dark and light and might be able to see outlines.

Radar has been doing well so far - he has gotten a bath, eaten his lunch, pooped in the hay and met the three resident goldens with NO problems. Stevee (our blind golden) was not real sure about this, but has since fallen asleep right next to Radar, so I think all will be fine in the end.

I know lots about Blind dogs so I can give you some good information, they are no differant than any other dog, you just have to be a little more protective of them. They need training, love and consistancy and most of all, furniture and items can not be moved at a whim. :)

So are you willing to talk about this beautiful little boy? If you want to know more about blind dogs you can look at Stevee Rae's website under Happy Endings (#08-362) and set up a meeting so you can meet Radar and Stevee.

See you soon!

Well, Hank went to the lake with us for the first time this past weekend. We think we should rename him Phelps. He is a master swimmer. He swam everywhere that he heard us clicking for him. That is our way of calling him, we click our tongue. He was chasing sticks and bringing them back onto shore. Our crooked Rosie couldn't keep up with him! :):):)

Hank is now 25 pounds at 13 weeks. He is getting so tall. Everyday he is learning something new. He can now sit on command. Eating is the love of his life. He oinks when he is eating or sniffing out food. The Big Boar at the Iowa State Fair has nothing on him!

Hank the Tank has our house memorized. He can maneuver around all the furniture at lightening speed. He will clunk into something that is out of place. He shakes his head to rearrange what the bump moved around and then carry on! :) Rosie is a huge part of Hank life. He relies on Rosie to show him the ropes and is near him 24/7. Hank's personality requires a companion for play and securing.

Well Hank is now in the great state of Iowa! His previous foster mom and dad were so sad to see him go but their work schedules had changed and they weren't going to be at home as much. There were tears involved in the goodbye. That tells you how special this little 19.1 pound 10 week old is. WOW! That is what we said when he got off the scale. I asked the vet if he is overweight and the vet said, "Not at all!" Be prepared for a BIG dog! That's how I like them.....big and cuddly. And Hank is a cuddler.

_______________________________________________________________

We just got home from vacation and Hank is a MOOSE! He has grown so much in a week. He is now 11 weeks old! He is now bounding up the stairs and jumping off steps. Does he still know that he is blind? The puppy sitter fell in love with him!

Hank is current with all of his vaccinations. He loves food, did I just say that he loves food. I am not exaggerating. He is a snarfer! We only feed him high quality dog food. Because of his "snarfing disorder", people food is out!

He knows the following commands: step, wall and we are working on sit. He is walking on a harness/leash. He loves his walks. He is very smart and a quick learner. He sleeps in a crate at night and when we are gone. He gets along with other dogs very well. Our crooked dog Rosie loves him and she will hold his bone for him as he chews the other end. They play tug and spoon each other when napping.

Hanks current fosters are amazed at all times how beautifully RADAR/HANK has adjusted to life with so many dogs.  He just wants to play and get love.  He has only had 1 accident in the house.  That was the first time he was alone.  He was in his play pen area vs. the crate and thus he had too much room to roam for his 4 hours by himself.  He sleeps and holds potty all night now.  He goes to bed at 9 and gets up at 5:00 am.  He eats and plays, and then at 7 he has to go back in his play pen.  Rick comes home for lunch at 11:30 and I get home from work at 3 and he is ready for a round of play time!

Radar is still learning to walk on a leash.  He is getting it slowly, but he is getting it.  We always use a harness for him since it is much easier for him to use all his good senses to help keep him safe.  He has learned the few steps we have in record time and now LEAPS off of them - it is very cute actually.

He still really wants to meet his forever family, so please if you have love and patients and would like to help a golden become the best they can be - come and meet Hank!

Radar went to the vet today and got his booster shots, weighed and micro chipped.  Radar weighs 14 pounds - can you say Big boy!!!  He did great today - no accidents in the house while we were at work and again slept all night in his crate.  I woke him up at 3 so he would let me get ready for work at 4:30.

We went for a quick walk at 5:00 a.m. and then I went to work and he played with the other girls.  Radar is getting better on the leash.  He and Stevee both wear harneses to allow them to use your whole head to track on their walk.  With more practice he will become a pro at this!  Radar has learned their is a step down into the living room and he is learning the house. Iit has taken him about a week to learn the lay of the land.  Next week we will start bringing him to explore the back yard more so he learns that.

Radars perfect home will be a family that will give him love and consistency.  Consistency is very important for blind dogs; they need to know they can trust you.  Working with Radar each day will be a must.  If you are a family that wants to have someone love you completely, come and meet Radar!

Radar will be going to the RAGOM's Education Booth at the 6th Annual "Dog Days of Summer"- Alimagnet Park in Burnsville on July 25th, so make sure you come and meet him - but he would love to find his forever family before than!

I have also added a picture of  Stevee Rae and Radar playing - yes blind dogs do play and they play all the time.

Hank/Radar is doing great!  His sister left Saturday morning, and Dopplar left on Sunday afternoon.  Boy those boys had a lot of fun being together; they would play and then sleep.  The favorite sleeping place would be on the deck by the pools.

Hank did great in the potty training area when we were home with him over the weekend.  When we went home today for lunch we had a mess, but I am sure that was because he was scared since it was the first time he was left alone in his play area.  Needless to say, tomorrow the area will be smaller.

Hank goes to bed around 8 or 9,  gets up to potty between 2 and 3 am, and then right back to sleep.  Hank sleeps in a wire crate at night and has no problems with that at all.  He knows we are near by.  We just tell him he is fine, and he lays back down.

I am sure the next few days will be an adjustment for him.  But we know he is very smart and will keep improving.  He is going for two short walks each day to get use to the new noises, and to learn to trust his handler.  He looks forward to meeting his forever family very soon...
