Katie is a big flirt.  She's wonderful to photograph...when the camera comes out, she's ready. You can probably see from the pictures that her actions seem to say, "if you don't like that pose, how about this one?"

Katie

Katie's demeanor is definitely calm and laid-back. She's happiest when I'm the one doing the sit/stay because she's definitely a Velcro dog, i.e. she's by my side all the time. She's housetrained, has no bad habits that I've seen so far, doesn't resource guard or counter-surf and isn't destructive. She and the resident dogs have free roam and have never been crated/gated (no need). She's a senior beauty at 11 years old...all 88.5 pounds of her are perfectly distributed on a tallish frame. Her body structure is perfect, which is obvious by her graceful gait...she absolutely turns heads during our walks.

During vetting, she was found to have lyme/anaplasma (quite common). She possibly has cataracts starting up, and is being treated for an ear infection and low thyroid. She'll have a small tumor removed from the side of her lip next week.

Katie used to live on a farm. Her owner turned her over to RAGOM because of cat (small kitten) aggression; however, when I took her to the spa last week, I asked that their two house cats (who roam freely thru the facility) be crated for their safety. When I picked Katie up about four hours later, I asked whether she'd bothered the cats. The groomer looked embarrassed and said she'd forgotten to crate the cats, but that Katie hadn't paid any attention to them. Soooooo, I took her to the local animal shelter where I knew they had two dog-savvy cats in their waiting room. Same thing - she ignored cat #1 who was laying on the counter as well as cat #2 who was draped over a window sill. Just as importantly, the cats ignored her which indicated there were no aggressive vibes going on.  When she met the neighbor's 5 pound Shitzu, she turned up her nose and walked away. Next week, I'll take her into the woods to see how she reacts to squirrels and rabbits.

Katie is one happy lassie now that she's living inside. The first night, she strutted herself over and plopped herself down on the biggest/softest doggie bed in the bedroom, which seemed perfectly okay to the resident dogs.

Life is good.

BTW...if you're interested in this pretty lassie, her basic needs (so far) are:

A physical fence is preferred, but negotiable

Requires another dog in the home

        Ok with children over ten

Can be left home alone for a few hours only

Katie has found her perfect forever home with FM. She loves living at the lake in northern Minnesota during the summer and will be heading for Florida to lay by the pool this winter. Life is good :)

Two weeks ago, we helped Katie's 13 year old FB to the Bridge and it's been lonesome around here without Chub (name appropriate), who reminded me at precisely the same time every day that it was time to eat, to take a walk, as well as time to go to bed and get up. Katie seemed a little curious the first few days we were alone, especially when BBD would usually be whoo-whoo-whooing in anticipation of being fed or going for a walk, but she's more laid-back and just goes with the flow as long as she can be with her human. What a good girl!

We love to sit on the deck to watch and enjoy the gifts of summer...flowers in bloom, the orioles, robins and humming birds in the feeders, and the family of Canadians (Mr & Mrs Goose with 7 goslings) who float by a couple times a day.

My favorite times are when the loons start "talking" to each other (generally early morning or at dusk). Did you know the loon, Minnesota's State Bird, has four calls? Their tremolo, which sounds a bit like maniacal laughter, is an aggressive call. The wail is a long, drawn-out sound. The hoot, a shorter call, is used to communicate among parents and young. The yodel is sounded by male loons guarding their territory. And that loons don't call when migrating in the south? Katie sometimes "waters" the flowers, but never chases the birds. What a good girl!

Good Morning

Not everybody knew I was baby sitting Katie 09-257.  I'm sorry I have not updated lately.  She has been just wonderful, after moving in to our home all is great.  No fights, she found her spot next to our bed to sleep at night, where to go outside, in fact she has been better than my own dogs. Last week, my wife and I went on a three day snowmobile trip [that's all the time off when you are retired].  Katie 09-257, Princess 09-168 and our border collie went to my Daughters home in Woodbury. She has two dogs of her own, a puggle and a German police dog. I believe it must have been fun with all five; our other dog, Winsor, went over the rainbow bridge about three weeks ago. My Granddaughter was in charge of feeding and letting them out. They have a large wood fenced yard which worked out great.

Katie's foster mom will be home in a couple weeks, and I'm sure she can't wait to have a little peace and quiet.

Good Morning! As you can see Katie 09-357 has settled in. This is a picture of her and our senior dog Winsor[16+] . KatieIt was a little hectic around here over holidays, but also a wonderful time had by all.  Katie sure is a great dog. She is staying with our family for a couple months while her foster is taking a little vacation south.  After this 30 below weather I think we should all go there. Any questions, you can get hold of me. Foster Jan D.

Katie really enjoys life. This morning, I took a picture of her staring very intently out the window to watch the noisy Canadian geese who flew in yesterday (loud honk-honks), and who have been resting in the lake and building up their fat reserves before they continue to migrate south.

All in all, Katie is an absolute joy to have around. She's a very polite girl who gets along with the other dogs, loves to ride in the car, walks nicely on leash, and is friendly with people of all ages - - from children (as you can see from the pictures) to senior citizens who we've visited at the Assisted Living Center.

Now, we're off for our morning walk...the four of us (three dogs and a FM) take lots of long walks every day for the exercise as well as to take advantage of our gorgeous fall weather. Although I hesitated at first about taking out three dogs at a time, I had handled them individually and knew they all walked beautifully on leash. They even wait patiently if one or the other has to stop to sniff a fire hydrant or take a potty break. Yes, we get lots of smiles from drivers going by and fellow walkers don't have a chance...the dogs (wag wag wag) insist on a head scratch or two before they move aside to let them pass. I must say, they are a handsome three-some.

The cool, rainy weather hasn't stopped Katie or Maggie 09-384 at all; in fact, now that Maggie has lost lots of her extra weight, Katie and Maggie love to chase each other through the wet grass like a couple of puppies.

Katie is a very healthy, confident and active "Autumn Senior" who has adapted very easily to changes in her life. She is so pretty, but sometimes looks at me with such funny expressions that she makes me laugh. Her favorite time seems to be when she wakes up in the morning...she stretches out on her doggie bed and stays there until she gets a belly rub. FM has to stay close to home for the next week or two so she's getting lots of extra attention...and loving it.

If you've got any questions about Katie, let your Placement Adviser know.

Hey guys!

Katie here. I’m visiting with a real nice family in the Twin Cities this week. We’ve been having lots of fun. They have two grandchildren who come over and play with me. I let them throw the toys around and then we all chase them around the house. After awhile, I get a little tired, so I just watch them run around. Then when we’re done, we all get something to drink. I just love these kids to pieces. And I think they like me too.

The second day I was here, I waited by the door for them to come over and play. When they got here, they wanted to brush my beautiful Golden locks, so I let them take turns. Boy, did that feel good.

Today we went for a walk to the park. It was the first day that it didn’t rain since I got here. I just love the fall leaves, don’t you? I’ll be going back to my foster home in a few days, but I’m hoping that soon, I’ll have a forever family to love. And if they want to, I’ll let them brush me every day.

I love seniors. Check that...I LOVE SENIORS.

That's because seniors are the kindest, gentlest, calmest, most loyal creatures imaginable and make outstanding companions.

Sure, they've slowed down a little and yes, there may be a few health problems, but the joy they can add to your life is worth more than what it takes to manage the aging process (theirs and yours).

Do these pastimes/qualities appeal to you? Leisurely walks. Slower lifestyle. Stress relief. WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get - - their shape and personalities are already developed). No Surprises. Comforting (most seniors are happiest when they're sitting at your feet or curled up in their bed next to yours).

If they do, contact your placement advisor and ask about Katie.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare.
And in return, dogs give us their all.
It's the best deal man has ever made.

M. Altman
