Mirra 08-194

Mirra is a 60 lb., one year old sweet Golden Retriever/Yellow Lab mix with a bad haircut from the shelter due to her being a matted muddy mess when she came in. They said she looked much more like a Golden before they shaved her, so I am anxious to see her new coat come in. This is a dog who really wants to please.

Mirra is spayed and up to date on her shots. She tested negative for Heartworm, so we have started her on Interceptor heartworm preventative and Frontline Plus to prevent fleas and ticks. She is crate trained, appears to be house trained (has not had one single accident!), does basic commands and has no problems with resource guarding. She loves to go for car rides and jumps right in and looks at us as if to say, “Let’s go!”

Mirra does fine with other dogs and has ignored our cat. She does not show any aggression towards children, but I think she would do best in a house without little children simply due to the fact that she could knock them over in her exuberance! She loves to play with her toys; her favorite is a stuffed cupcake that was given as a gift from our daughter Brooke, who is also a foster for RAGOM.

Since Mirra came to RAGOM as a stray from a shelter, not much is known about her history. We think she may have spent a fair amount of time tied up outside because she was unfamiliar with things such as doorways and stairs, but she is a quick learner and with a little encouragement (and a lot of treats!) she mastered both within 24 hours of arrival here at our home in Pleasant Hill, Iowa (Des Moines area).

Mirra walks ok on a leash, once she gets that first out the door run through the grass to smell who came into her yard overnight! We are walking her with a Gentle Leader to teach her that pulling is not pleasant. I think she would do great with going to obedience classes with her forever family, she so wants to please and she does have some walking manners to work on.

Yesterday we had a field trip to our daughter & son-in-law’s home where there are two Golden’s (one LARGE male and one female) and a fenced in back yard. Mirra did a great job with both dogs and played to her heart's content in the back yard with them. What fun watching the three of them bounce around! She was doing the happy dance!!! Dog friends!!! No problems with resource guarding or dominance with with either male or female dogs. She had all her doggie manners about her for the visit.

I am pretty sure Mirra is finding a home with people a much better place than the shelter was; she is very content to stretch out and chew on a rawhide bone (see picture), get belly rubs, or go for a walk. She has also gotten the knack of going to the back door to be put on a tie out for a quick potty break when there is not time for a walk.

Some of our photos make Mirra’s coat appear to be light in color, but she is a reddish golden. The photo of her head out the window, ready to ride, is most true of her beautiful coat color. The shelter had shaved her down due to her matted hair, and her coat is growing out a little. Should be grown out in time for the heat of the summer, unless we are still having snow in June! – hey, with this weather, anything IS possible.

Things Mirra likes to do:

~ Go for rides with me when I run errands
~ Go for walks with me to enjoy the Spring air
~ Go outside on her lead to watch me work in my flower beds
~ Follow me as I clean the house
~ Lay at my feet in the kitchen while I cook
~ Lay at my feet as I watch TV
~ Lay at my feet as I read

In other words, this girl is a faithful companion! She goes where I go, or where Kent, my husband, goes when he is home. She is not choosy; she just wants to be with us! If companionship is what you seek, Mirra is your girl!

On the other hand, she is content to be crated at night and when we go to work. When we return to let her out, she greets us with tail wagging and a big ol’ stretch, and then proceeds to keep close tabs on us so she doesn’t miss out on an opportunity to do something with us.

Mirra is a quick learner. After one episode of being told “No!” when she jumped on the couch, she now walks by and glances at the couch, but has not jumped back up. She so wants to please and she is such a smart girl.
